THE KRISHNA TEMPLE COMPLEX, HAMPI: AN EXPLORATION OF ITS IDENTITY AS A MEDIEVAL TEMPLE IN THE CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Ashima Krishna January, 2009 © 2009 Ashima Krishna ABSTRACT Hindu temples in India have been in abundance for centuries. However, many have lost their use over time. They lie vacant and unused on vast tracts of land across the Indian subcontinent, in a time when financial resources for the provision of amenities to serve the local community are hard to come by. In the case of Hampi, this strain is felt not only by the community inhabiting the area, but the tourism sector as well. Hampi’s immense significance as a unique Medieval-city in the Indian subcontinent has increased tourist influx into the region, and added pressure on authorities to provide for amenities and facilities that can sustain the tourism industry. The site comprises near-intact Medieval structures, ruins in stone and archaeologically sensitive open land, making provision of tourist facilities extremely difficult. This raises the possibility of reusing one of the abundant temple structures to cater to some of these needs, akin to the Virupaksha Temple Complex and the Hampi Bazaar. But can it be done? There is a significant absence of research on possibilities of reusing a Hindu Temple. A major reason for this gap in scholarship has been due to the nature of the religion of Hinduism and its adherents. Communal and political forces over time have consistently viewed all Hindu temples as cultural patrimony of the people, despite legal ownership resting with the Government of India. -

The course of the first one is used as a general analogy to study the second, and the older one. This approach puts aside the issue of biological differences among the human fossils, and concentrates solely on the cultural and technological innovations. It also demonstrates that issues that are common- place to the study of the trajisition from foraging to cultivation and animal husbandry can be employed as an overarching model for the study of the transition from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic. The advantage of this approach is that it focuses on the core areas where each of these revolutions began, the ensuing dispersals and their geographic contexts. -

1 Stones, Bones, and States: A New Approach to the Neolithic Revolution Richard H. Steckel and John Wallis February 19, 2007 The invention of agriculture, the wide spread shift to a sedentary lifestyle, and the growth of large population centers began around 10,000 years ago in what we now call the Neolithic revolution. This profound change in human activity marks the beginning of modern human society and has long been of interest to economists, anthropologists, and social scientists in general. Was it caused by a shift in relative prices due to climate, population pressure, or changes in the animal environment? Did it result from technological innovation in human knowledge about the physical world? Was institutional change a catalyst? Early research was highly speculative, with abundant explanations built on little data. New evidence from archeology and anthropology has eliminated some hypotheses and raised possibilities for answering more specific questions. This paper contributes to both the Neolithic empirical evidence and the theoretical questions about the Neolithic revolution. We propose a theoretical answer to how larger social groups were organized. A sedentary life-style was necessary for settled agriculture, and the shift to larger population units occurred contemporaneously with, and may have even preceded, the spread of new agricultural techniques. We then focus on the paradoxes inherent in the question: why did people move into towns and cities? Urban living came at a substantial cost. Accumulating evidence from skeletons, which we discuss below, shows that Neolithic cities and towns were unhealthy. Their residents were smaller in stature than hunter-gatherers and their bones had relatively more lesions indicating dental decay, infections and other signs of physiological stress. -

Long Run Health Effects of the Neolithic Revolution: The Natural Selection of Infectious Disease Resistance Working Draft C. Justin Cook∗ January 15, 2013 Abstract This paper argues that genetic differences arising since the Neolithic Revolution can explain variation in life expectancy before the advent of effective medicines and vaccines. The differential timing of the Neolithic Revolution, along with the varied distribution of domesticate animals, resulted in historical differences in the exposure to a class of infectious pathogens. This historical difference in disease environments led to differences in the natural selection of resistance. To measure the resulting genetic differences, we construct a measure of genetic variation within the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system, a key component of the immune system. Our estimations show that a ten percent increase in HLA genetic diversity is roughly associated with a five percent increase in pre-medicinal life expectancy. JEL Classification: N30, I12, Z13. In the developed world the majority of diseases are associated with aging, e.g. cancer and heart disease, but in developing states preventable infectious diseases remain the primary cause of mortality (Cutler et al. 2006). Why are these diseases so prevalent and destructive in developing states? The most obvious answer is tied to the socioeconomic conditions that continually plague inhabitants of less devel- oped countries. -

Origin and Development of the Indus Script: Insights from Harappa and other sites Jonathan Mark Kenoyer Origin and Development of the Indus Script: Insights from Harappa and other sites Introduction The origin of the Indus script has been a source of considerable discussion ever since the discovery and excavation of the Indus cities of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa in the 1920s to 1930s (Marshall 1931; Vats 1940). When the Indus civilization was discovered the only other early civilizations known to have writing in the Old World were the ancient Sumerians along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in southern Mesopotamia (Nissen 1993), the ancient Egyptians along the Nile (Baines 2004) and the ancient Chinese along the Huang He (Yellow) River in north central China (Haicheng 2015). The oracle bone inscriptions at the site of Yinxu in Anyang were being discovered around the same time that Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa were being excavated (Bagley 1999, 127). Although at first some scholars thought that there might be some influence from Mesopotamian writing systems, in the first major report on the excavations at Mohenjo Daro in 1931, Gadd clearly states that there was no connection between the Indus script and the writing of Sumer or for that matter Egypt (Gadd 1931, 411). Surveys and test excavations in Baluchistan (Stein 1929; Hargreaves and Sewell 1929 (reprint 1981); Stein 1931) and Sindh (Majumdar 1934; Stein 1942) had recovered pottery that appeared to be older than that found at Mohenjo Daro, but little attention was paid to the presence of potter’s marks or graffiti on these different types of pottery. -

Stone Axe Technology in Neolithic South India: New Evidence from the Sanganakallu-Kupgal Region) Mideastern Karnataka ADAM BRUMM, NICOLE BOIVIN, RAVI KORISETTAR, JINU KOSHY, AND PAULA WHITTAKER THE TRANSITION TO AGRICULTURE-and to settled village life-occurred at dif ferent times in various parts of the world. Even within the Indian subcontinent, the Neolithic transition did not occur simultaneously across the entire region; rather, Neolithic "pockets" developed at different moments in certain key areas within the subcontinent. One such area is the South Deccan Plateau in South India, where the third millennium B.C. saw the development ofa novel Neolithic way of life that differed in crucial ways from Neolithic lifeways in other parts of the subcontinent (Allchin 1963). This tradition was marked by a particular focus on cattle and by the appearance of specific, perhaps ritual practices that featured the burning of large quantities of cow dung and the resultant creation of ash mounds in the landscape (Allchin 1963; Boivin 2004). This unique Neolithic tra dition, while still relatively poorly understood compared to Neolithic cultures in Europe and the Near East, has much to offer prehistorians attempting to under stand the changes that led to and accompanied domestication and sedentarization. It also has much to offer South Asian scholars who wish to gain a better apprecia tion of the changes that led to complexity, political economy, and state-level societies in South India (Boivin et al. 2005; Fuller et al. forthcoming). One key requirement for such studies is a better understanding of the material culture changes that attended the Neolithic transition, as well as the subsequent transition from the Neolithic to the Megalithic or Iron Age (see Table 1 for period designa tions and chronology). -

Though only sixty years of age, he had published eight books and two book-length articles, four chapters of the new revised edition of the Cambridge Ancient History, thirty-six other articles, and numerous book reviews. He had also served for nine years in Egypt on expeditions of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the institution to which he devoted his entire career, and more than four years in the United States Navy in World War II, during which he was wounded in action-both periods when scientific writing fell into the background of his activity. He was presented by the President of the United States with the bronze star medal and cited "for meritorious achievement as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. VIGILANCE ... in the efficient and expeditious sweeping of several hostile mine fields.., and contributing materially to the successful clearing of approaches to Okinawa for our in- vasion forces." Hayes' original intention was to work in the field of medieval arche- ology. -
