The Oriental Institute’s new special exhibit A Cosmopolitan City: Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Old Cairo fulfills that goal in a very timely way. AFor most of us, the term “Egyptian Civilization” conjures up images of the ancient civilization of the pharaohs with its pyramids, magnificent temples, and opulent tombs. As true as those images may be, they are only part of the overall panorama of Egyptian history, which did not end with the Islamic conquest, but instead entered a new, different, and spectacular era with the art, architecture, and cultural achievements of medieval Islamic civilization. At the epicenter of Islamic Egypt was Fustat — Old Cairo — the early Islamic city that grew to be the metropolis of Cairo that we know today. The Oriental Institute has an extremely important collection of artifactual and textual material from Fustat in the seventh–twelfth centuries ad, and it tells a fascinating story. A Cosmopolitan City presents this rarely seen material as a way to explore the complex interaction of the Muslim, Coptic Christian, and Jewish communities that together made Fustat a vibrant city that in many ways foreshadowed the rich diversity of modern global urbanism. In Old Cairo, in ac- cordance with Islamic law, Christians and Jews were defined as monotheistic “People of the Book” who were allowed to practice their own religions and exercise a degree of communal self government. These three communities lived in their own neighborhoods, spoke different languages, and worshipped separately — in the famous Coptic “Hanging Church,” in the brilliant al-Azhar Mosque, and in the Ben Ezra Synagogue — but they interacted on a daily basis in their economic life and were closely connected in a shared way of life as citizens in the successive Abbasid, Fatimid, and Mamluk states centered around Fustat/Cairo. The written records — especially the treasure trove of documents from the Cairo Genizah (document repository) of the Ben Ezra Synagogue — show both the strong cultural identities and the complex inter-relationships of the communi- ties that constituted Old Cairo. Most notable among these are the documents in Judaeo-Arabic, a linguistic amalgam that clearly shows the influence of Muslim Arab culture on Jewish life in Cairo and elsewhere in North Africa. The exhibit high- lights the extent of these cultural interconnections by showing the objects of everyday life recovered by George Scanlon’s excavations in Fustat (1964–1980). Occasionally these artifacts show religious motifs, but mostly, were it not for textual records, we would be unable to determine whether the objects belonged to Muslim, Christian, or Jewish households. As seen in the exhibit, even the decorations on the Torah ark door of the Ben Ezra Synagogue would have been almost identi- cal to the decorations in many Muslim and Christian houses and public buildings. This suggests that these communities shopped in the same places and purchased goods made by the same artisans, and we can be confident that most people in Old Cairo were multi-lingual, whether to deal with the tax collectors, the shopkeepers, or their close neighbors. He was known by several names: his original Hebrew name Moses ben Maimon; his Latinized name Maimonides; the Hebrew acronym RaMBaM, standing for Rabbi Moses ben Maimon; his Arabic name al-Ra’is Abu ‘Imran Musa ibn Maymun ibn ‘Abdallah (‘Ubaydallah) al-Qurtubi al-Andalusi al-Isra’ili; the honorific title “the teacher [ha-Moreh]”; and of course “the great eagle.” In this chapter I provide a brief synopsis of Maimonides’ intellectual bio- graphy, against the backdrop of twelfth-century Spain and North Africa. Recent biographies by Kraemer and Davidson have provided us with a detailed reconstruction of Maimonides’ life, drawn from Geniza fragments, letters, observations by his intellectual peers, and comments by Maimonides himself.1 We shall consider, ever so briefly, important philosophical influences upon Maimonides; scholars have explored in great detail which philosophers – Greek, Jewish, and Arabic – were most influential upon his intellectual development. I will then discuss Maimonides’ major philosophical works, most of which we shall examine in more detail in subsequent chapters. Al-Momani *1Al Balqa' Applied University (Jordan) 2Department of Allied Medical Sciences, Al Balqa' Applied University (Jordan) *Corresponding Author`s E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this paper, we examine the language situation among the Circassians of Jordan within the framework of previous theories on language maintenance and shift as proposed by Fishman. The study investigates factors influencing the sample responses toward importance and usefulness of the Arabic and Circassian languages. Convenience sample include 100 subject selected by five in group persons. Data collected by means of a questionnaire developed and used by previous investigators. Results indicate that Arabic is used by the respondents for various functions and Circasssian is used in very restricted social domains. Evidence is represented that the overwhelming majority of the Circassians agree that it is important for them to speak in both Arabic as a means of communication, and Circassian as an important symbol of their identity. These results indicate that the Circassians of Jordan are experiencing a process of language shift which appears to be in its initial position, as most of them appear to be less proficient in their language. They also indicate that the younger generation (forty years or below) of Circassians show a stronger tendency toward shifting their speech than the older generation (forty years or above).

Graffiti is a new urban phenomenon, which has drawn attention in light of its connection with protestation culture and street art. Thanks to symbolism of graffiti, the artists have added mysterious aspects to their work and distinguished themselves from formal culture. Social protestation is the most notable feature of the graffiti found in Iranian cities. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no notable research work in Iran on the relationship of human, society, and existence from of graffiti symbolism viewpoint in particular. The present study is an attempt to survey and evaluate common symbols used on urban graffiti through documentary research. C ,\,,: 41-------<..<.LI-hY,-""lA""""","""I,--ft-'t _ '" I) Abstract Mustafa Sadiq al-Rafii, a modem Egyptian writer with classical style, is not studied by scholars of Arabic literature as are his contemporary liberals, such as Taha Hussein. This thesis provides a historical background and a brief literary survey that helps contextualize al-Rafii, the period, and the area he came from. AI-Rafii played an important role in the two literary and intellectual schools during the Arabic literary revival, which extended from the French expedition (1798-1801) to around the middle of the twentieth century. These two schools, known as the Old and the New, vied to shape the literature and thought of Egypt and other Arab countries. The former, led by al-Rafii, promoted a return to classical Arabic styles and tried to strengthen the Islamic identity of Egypt. The latter called for cutting off Egypt from its Arabic history and rejected the dominance and continuity of classical Arabic language. AI-Rafii contributed to the Revival by supporting a line ofthought that has not been favored by pro-Westernization governments, which made his legacy almost forgotten. Deriving his literature from the canon of Arabic language, culture, and history, al-Rafii produced a literature based on a revived version of classical Arabic literature, an accomplishment which makes him unique among modem Arab writers.
