Patents

Patent full title: Stimulation, modulation and/or inhibition of endothelial proteolytic activity and/or angiogenic activity Patent number: WO 1999008522 A1 This is a utility patent Description of patent: Vascular endothelial growth factor-B (VEGF-B) and vascular endothelial growth factor- C (VEGF-C) are angiogenic polypeptides. It has been shown that VEGF-B and -C are angiogenic in vitro especially in combination with bFGF. VEGF-C also increases plasminogen activator (PA) activity in bovine endothelial cell lines and this is accompanied by a concomitant increase in PA inhibitor-1. Addition of alpha-2- antiplasmin to bovine endothelial cells co-treated with bFGF and VEGF-C partially inhibits collagen gel invasion. Patent Assignee: Ludwig Inst Cancer Res; Univ Helsinki Licensing; Univ Geneva Inventors: Pepper M.S., Alitalo K., Eriksson U. Web address: http://www.google.com/patents/WO1999008522A1?cl=en Own contribution: Responsible for the key findings, namely synergism between antiogenic cytokines, and stimulation of angiogenic and proteolytic activity by these cytokines in vitro

Patent full title: Methods and compositions for directing migration of neural progenitor cells Patent number: US 2008/0118480 A1 This is a utility patent Description of patent: Method for modulating the migration of neural progenitor cells in a mammal by exposing the cells to a VEGFR-2 ligand and FGF-2. Methods of treating neurological disorders by exposing the mammal to a VEGFR-2 ligand in the presence of FGF-2 are also provided. A composition including a biocompatible matrix associated with FGF-2 is also provided. Patent assignee: Imclone Systems Incorporated New York NY, USA Inventors: Zhang H., Vutsikas L., Pepper M.S., Kiss J.Z. Web address: http://www.google.com/patents/US20080118480 Own contribution: Invloved in the conceptualization and execution of the experiments leading to the key findings

- 43 - Patent full title: Therapeutic and diagnostic methods and compositions based on jagged/notch proteins and nucleic acids Patent number: WO 1997045143 A1 This is a utility patent Description of patent: This invention relates to therapeutic and diagnostic methods and compositions based on Jagged/Notch proteins and nucleic acids, and on the role of their signaling pathway in endothelial cell migration and/or differentiation. In addition, this invention provides a substantially purified Jagged protein, as well as a substantially purified nucleic acid molecule or segment thereof encoding Jagged protein, or a functionally equivalent derivative, or allelic or species variant thereof. Patent assignee: Thomas Maciag, Roberto Montesano, Nat American Red Cross; Michael S. Pepper, Univ Geneve Michael K K Wong, Ann B Zimrin Inventors: Maciag T., Montesano R., Pepper M.S., Wong M.K.K., Zimrin A.B. Web address: http://www.google.com/patents/WO1997045143A1?cl=en Own contribution: Invloved in the conceptualization and execution of the experiments leading to the key findings

Patent full title: Transgenic cell selection Patent number: PCT PATENT: PCT/US2014/019308 (based on US Provisional Application 61/771,331) This is a utility patent Description of patent: The invention relates generally to the field of molecular biology and medicine. More particularly, it concerns methods for production and selection of transgenic cells and vectors for the production of such cells. Inventors: Krause K.H., Suter D., Salmon P., Myburgh R., Pepper M.S. Web address: application not published yet; anticipated publication date: Jan 2015 Own contribution: Co-initiator of the HIV gene therapy project.
