Great for children because it is from the perspective of Charlemagne's son.

Legends of Charlemagne by Thomas Bulfinch (Librivox audio book, e-text)

The listening time is about 18 hours

Review: The introduction gives a great overview of history of the era. It isn't quite a story like as Beowulf, but it is reminiscent in the grandiousity of the battles. I think students, especially boys, will enjoy it; though, it needs to be read as legend, not history. I really love the Orlando and Oliver story of the hand to hand battle where once they realized they knew each other which resulted in a peacful end to the confrontation between two warring sides. Another interesting one is the two knights, one was Renaldo the other a Saracen, seeking to capture and tame the wild horse Baiard.

The Life of Charlemagne by (primary source) (Librivox audio book, e- text)

The listening time is less than an hour.

Review: Einhard was employed by Charlemagne as a court historian. At the request of Charlemagne’s son and successor , he wrote a biography of Charlemagne, the Vita Karoli Magni or Life of Charlemagne (c. 817–830), which provides much direct information about Charlemagne’s life and character. In composing this he made full use of the Frankish Royal annals. Einhard’s literary model was the classical work of the Roman historian , the Lives of the Caesars. (adapted from Wikipedia)

History begins with the Merovignian dynasty just as our study does making it an excellent text for this study.

Life of Charlemagne by Notker the Stammerer (primary source) (Librivox audio book, e-text)

The listening time is about 3 hours

Review: I couldn't find a separate book with Notker, but the Librivox is separate. This was wriiten for Charlemagne's grandson. It contains amusing anecdotes and witty tales. Some say that it is less historically accurate than Einhard.
