Now, in the Gospel of this week, Mark 6: 30-34, they were back and eager to tell Jesus all that had happened. After hearing the report, Jesus asked them to take a little time off. They went to a quiet place to relax, pray, and reflect on all the works they had accomplished. We can be certain that Jesus hoped his disciples would take an honest look at what had happened, who was behind it, and how they could grow from it all. In our busy life, we know that everyone needs some quiet time, in a quiet place, every once in a while. Why do we all need to do that? We need time away because it is a time for us to look into our lives, our actions, or our motivations. Jesus led his disciples off to a deserted place to rest, people, however, continued to follow them. They followed Jesus and his disciples because they wanted to hear Jesus ’ teaching; they wanted to be released from the burdens of their lives. Indeed they came to Jesus for direction. Seeing that Jesus took pity on them. His love was a personal love for each and every person who came to him in need. Undoubtedly, in the world today, many people are searching, are hungering for guidance. People are looking for direction. They may be parents worrying about the future of their children, young men, women looking for a job, middle-aged men, women losing their purpose of life. They are people looking for answers and for meanings. They are like sheep without a shepherd, and Jesus looks to us and wants us to be his good workers in his vineyard. Why us? Because we are called to be God ’s disciples. Are we aware of the Call? Fr. In Communion with Christ – The Lord’s Supper is a reminder of what Jesus did in the past, a symbol of our present relationship with him, and a promise of what he will do in the future. After Jesus proclaimed himself to be the “bread of life,” he said, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day” (John 6:54). The Lord’s Supper depicts this ongoing truth that our spiritual food is in Jesus Christ. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him” (John 6:56). We see and show that we live in Christ, and that he lives in us. Throughout the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the Church is celebrating and fulfilling Jesus’ command to keep his memorial. We see this through the Presentation of the Gifts and Preparation of the Altar and throughout the Eucharistic Prayer. If we are standing during the first part of the epiclesis, which is the invocation of the Holy Spirit, we make a gesture of reverence each time the priest kneels or genuflects by our making our own profound bow from the waist. This shows awe and reverence of the invocation of the Holy Spirit. Both epicleses are a summary of the other four main elements of the Eucharistic prayer: the Institution Narrative and Consecration, the Anamnesis, the Oblation, and the Intercession. We will delve further into the meaning and significance of each element this week and in the following weeks. The Institution Narrative and Consecration takes place after the invocation of the Holy Spirit upon the bread and wine to transform them into the Body and Blood of Christ. The priest prays the words of institution because they make present the moment that Christ instituted this sacrament at the Last Supper: “Take this, all of you, and eat of it…and drink from it…Do this in memory of me.” (Although this prayer is sometimes referred to as the “words of consecration,” it is not. The entire Eucharistic prayer is a consecration.) By means of the words and actions of Christ, the sacrifice recalls the Last Supper which Christ himself instituted when he offered his Body and Blood under the appearance of bread and wine, gave them to his apostles to eat and drink, and left them with the command to carry on this same mystery. This same mystery that nourished the apostles nourishes us to this day – and will nourish us in the future. It is here that all that seemed so important out there no longer is and one can get lost in the rows of trees and majestic beauty. God is here and all is good. We need to connect with the Divine Source of all that is in order to understand what it is we are doing and why we are doing it. Otherwise, things stop making sense and bitterness can overcome one’s spirit. It’s okay to play once in a while and to discover that place of profound life and peace. People always have needs and there is constantly something to do. And while all of that is necessary and we are needed, there is also that inner solitude within that needs to be celebrated and released. We all need a pine grove. It’s that little place we can go and leave all that consumes us behind. It’s a place where technology can be set aside and wonder, and awe given some time. We don’t have to text, calculate, or orchestrate anything in the pine grove.
