EUCHARIST OF THE LAST SUPPER MAUNDY THURSDAY 2020 7.00 pm 1 WELCOME TO ONLINE WORSHIP To view this service online and find information on future services visit: www.facebook.com/winchestercathedral www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk www.youtube.com/channel/UCP7MOHTw7DkhXiGR6_05b6Q Many of us will never have joined in a streamed Eucharist before and it will probably seem strange at first. These strange times call for new patterns and Archbishop Justin has challenged us to become a different kind of church. There will probably be much sadness as we can no longer gather together in our familiar places with familiar people. Yet we are still the people of God. Over the coming days and weeks, we need to be Christ’s hands and feet in our world, sharing grace and practical kindness. At home or at work, self-isolating or looking after others, we can all do something to show our love. The Thursday of Holy Week derives the name Maundy from the Latin 'mandatum', meaning commandment. In St John's account of the Last Supper Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment, ‘that you love one another as I have loved you’ and exemplified it by taking a towel and washing his disciples' feet. 2 This Festal Eucharist is a celebration of the Institution of Holy Communion. The saying of the Gloria, which has been omitted during Lent, returns on this day and white vestments are worn. In obedience to his command to ‘do this in remembrance of me’ we shall recall Jesus' act of self-giving love in dying to redeem us, prefigured in the Last Supper. At the end of the Last Supper Jesus and his disciples went to Gethsemane, singing a hymn as they went. So also the mood of the end of this service changes from celebration to the agony of prayer, betrayal, arrest and trial. During the Watch of Prayer, which follows at the end of this service we are invited to watch with Christ in solemn recollection of Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Try to actively share in the service, not just have it on in the background. Join in the words in bold. You may not want to stand or kneel as usual, but find a comfortable position that helps you and perhaps think about how you hold your hands, maybe holding them palms upwards to receive God’s love and blessing. At the heart of the service is communion but communion we cannot physically share, and so we are invited to each make a spiritual communion, as the Prayer Book teaches. May God bless you as we worship Him together. 3 ORDER OF SERVICE The Gathering THE GREETING The Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester, presiding at this service, greets the people. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen. You may like to adopt a prayer posture such as sitting with your head bowed, as we remember our brokenness and call to mind our sins. PRAYER OF PREPARATION All Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 4 PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Our Lord Jesus Christ says: 'If you love me, keep my commandments. Unless I wash you, you have no part in me.' Let us confess to Almighty God our sins against his love, and ask him to cleanse us. President Almighty God, All our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. President Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. 5 THE COLLECT President Let us pray. The President invites the people to pray, and silence is kept. God our Father, you have invited us to share in the supper which your Son gave to his Church to proclaim his death until he comes: may he nourish us by his presence and unite us in his love: who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen. THE GLORIA President Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us; you take away the sin of the world: receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: have mercy upon us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. 6 The Liturgy of the Word Sit comfortably to listen to God speaking through the Scriptures. NEW TESTAMENT READING 1 Corinthians 11. 23-26 read by Canon Mark Collinson, Canon Principal Beloved, I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, 'This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.' For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL READING John 13.1-17, 31b-35 read by Canon Roland Riem, Vice-Dean and Canon Chancellor Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. 7 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ‘Lord, are you going to wash my feet?’ Jesus answered, ‘You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand.’ Peter said to him, ‘You will never wash my feet.’ Jesus answered, ‘Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.’ Simon Peter said to him, ‘Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!’ Jesus said to him, ‘One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.’ For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, ‘Not all of you are clean.’ After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord - and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, “Where I am going, you cannot come.” I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’ 8 Please sit comfortably for the address. ADDRESS Canon Andy Trenier, Precentor and Sacrist After the address we keep silence together for a few moments before THE WASHING OF FEET After the Washing of the Feet, the President says Almighty Father, whose Son Jesus Christ has taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for him: Give us the will to be the servant of others as he was the servant of all, who surrendered his life and died for us, and is now alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
