A fundamental strategy in the preservation of functional ecosystems is to identify and preserve a full compliment of habitat types, which in return support a diversity of animals, plants, and other life forms. Vegetation is an integral component of habitat and provides a relatively easy means of inventory and monitoring of ecosystem health both spatially and temporally. The current study, in Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, focuses on the identification of unique riparian and coulee plant associations, or plant community type. The study area is situated approximately 8 km north of the USA border and 40 km east of the town of Milk River and occurs at the interface between the Mixedgrass and Dry Mixedgrass Natural Subregions. Priority research is currently required to address gaps in the identification, description and distribution of plant associations within the coulee and riparian zones of these Subregions. Many of these communities recur over the landscape but may occur as very small patches of 1m2 or less. Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (ASRD) Resource Data Division contracted Wildlands Ecological to complete an inventory of natural/semi-natural plant communities, statistically analyse the data, and describe potential plant community or association types. -

Correct identification of willow species is an important part of land management. This guide describes the 29 willows that are known to occur on the Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming. Key words: Salix, willows, Shoshone National Forest, identification The Authors Walter Fertig has been Heritage Botanist with the University of Wyoming’s Natural Diversity Database (WYNDD) since 1992. He has conducted rare plant surveys and natural areas inventories throughout Wyoming, with an emphasis on the desert basins of southwest Wyoming and the montane and alpine regions of the Wind River and Absaroka ranges. Fertig is the author of the Wyoming Rare Plant Field Guide, and has written over 100 technical reports on rare plants of the State. Stuart Markow received his Masters Degree in botany from the University of Wyoming in 1993 for his floristic survey of the Targhee National Forest in Idaho and Wyoming. He is currently a Botanical Consultant with a research emphasis on the montane flora of the Greater Yellowstone area and the taxonomy of grasses. Box 5-549 Fort Richardson, Alaska 99505-0549 November 2006 Abstract Stewart River Training Area was surveyed for the presence of rare vascular plants in July 2006. A crew of four botanists surveyed all major habitats and substrates in the course of five days. A total of 155 specimens were collected, including a number of species that are rare in the state or globally. The rare species were arctic wormwood, (Artemisia senjavinensis; Alaska Natural Heritage Program Rank: G3-S2S3), Blaisdell’s bittercress (Cardamine blaisdellii; G4T3T4-S2S3), mountain stitchwort (Minuartia biflora; G5-S3S4), Walpole’s poppy (Papaver walpolei; G3-S3), Anvil Mountain primrose (Primula anvilensis; G3G4-S3S4), Greenland buttercup (Ranunculus auricomus; G5-S2), and matted starwort (Stellaria dicranoides; G3-S3). An additional species of candytuft (Smelowskia) may be a rare species, but determination by taxonomic experts is required. Four of these species (A. senjavinensis, P. walpolei, Smelowskia sp., and Stellaria dicranoides) were associated with barren carbonate outcrops in multiple sites in the training area. Blaisdell’s bittercress (C. blaisdellii) and Anvil Mountain primrose (Primula anvilensis) were encountered frequently in wet herbaceous meadows with some ground flow of water. We collected Greenland buttercup (R. auricomus) in only one location, composed of few individuals, in a shrub-meadow mosaic.
