TWO NEW ORCHID GENERA 399 X. Two orchid genera new to Sumatra (Orchidaceae) A. Schuiteman Rijksherbarium / Hortus Botanicus, POB 9514, NL-2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands Summary of the orchid Kuhlhasseltia Species genera and Orchipedum are recorded from Sumatra for the first time. Introduction The subtribe Orchidaceae-Goodyerinae is well represented in Malesia, with about 25 genera and hundreds of species. They are almost exclusively terrestrial plants with inconspicuous flowers, usually growing in deep shade in undisturbed forests. Many seem to prefer sloping terrain with seeping water. Some have very beautiful foliage and with are occasionally (often difficulty) cultivated, being popularly known as Jewel of the Orchids, e.g. species genera Anoectochilus, Dossinia, Goodyera, Ludisia, and Macodes. The of the other either have great majority Goodyerinae uniformly greenor cryptic darkbrown foliage. Although the genera ofthe Goodyerinae are reasonably distinct, it is often necessary to analyse a flowerbefore a reliable identification can be made. As a result they are fre- quently left unidentified, or, worse, they are incorrectly referred to generaof which the name is more or less familiar, such as Anoectochilus and Goodyera. While going through the unidentified and misidentified Goodyerinae in the Rijksher- barium, several interesting discoveries were made. Two of these are discussed below. Kuhlhasseltia cf. javanica J.J. Smith Mamas River Sumatra, Aceh, Upper valley, 1400-1700m (De Wilde & De Wilde- 18264 June Duyfjes , 1979). Biodivers Conserv (2011) 20:2263–2272 DOI 10.1007/s10531-011-0087-z ORIGINAL PAPER An assessment of orchids’ diversity in Penang Hill, Penang, Malaysia after 115 years Rusea Go • Khor Hong Eng • Muskhazli Mustafa • Janna Ong Abdullah • Ahmad Ainuddin Naruddin • Nam Sook Lee • Chang Shook Lee • Sang Mi Eum • Kwang-Woo Park • Kyung Choi Received: 22 September 2010 / Accepted: 3 June 2011 / Published online: 12 June 2011 Ó The Author(s) 2011. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract A comprehensive study on the orchid diversity in Penang Hill, Penang, Malaysia was conducted from 2004 to 2008 with the objective to evaluate the presence of orchid species listed by Curtis (J Strait Br R Asiat Soc 25:67–173, 1894) after more than 100 years. A total of 85 species were identified during this study, of which 52 are epiphytic or lithophytic and 33 are terrestrial orchids. This study identified 57 species or 64.8% were the same as those recorded by Curtis (1894), and 78 species or 66.1% of Turner’s (Gar- dens’ Bull Singap 47(2):599–620, 1995) checklist of 118 species for the state of Penang including 18 species which were not recorded by Curtis (1894) and the current study but are actually collected from Penang Hill. A comparison table of the current findings against Curtis (1894) and Turner (1995) is provided which shows only 56 species were the same in all three studies. The preferred account for comparison was Curtis’ (1894) list as his report was specifically for the areas around Penang Island especially Penang Hill, Georgetown and Ayer Itam areas.

  • STATUS of ORCHID TAXONOMY RESEARCH in the PHILIPPINES Review
Philippine Journal of Systematic Biology Vol. I, No. 1 (June 2007) Review STATUS OF ORCHID TAXONOMY RESEARCH IN THE PHILIPPINES Esperanza Maribel G. Agoo Biology Department, De La Salle University-Manila Orchidaceae is the largest of the monocotyledonous families in the Philip- pines. There are over 137 genera and about 998 species of orchids so far re- corded for the archipelago. This represents about 10% of the total flora of the Philippines. The Philippines ranks second to New Guinea in occurrence of en- demic species in the Malesian region. The monotypic endemic genera of orchids are Ceratocentron, Megalotus, Phragmorchis, and Schuitemania. Bogoria, Chelonistele, Lepidogyne, Omoea, Orchipedum are Malesian endemics repre- sented in the Philippines by one species each. The largest genera are Bulbophyllum (137 species), Dendrochilum (89 species), Dendrobium (85 species), Eria (54 species), Liparis (38 species), and Malaxis (33 species). Orchid collecting started in the Philippines as early as the Spanish times by Spanish missionaries like I. Mercado, G. Kamel, J. Blanco, Llanos, Fernandez- Villar, and Naves. Other notable collectors or expeditions were P. Sonnerat, T Haenke and L. Nee (Malaspina Expedition), A. von Chamisso (Romassoff), S. Perrottet (Le Rhone), H. Cuming, A. Loher, F.J.F. Meyen (Princess Louise of Prussia), C. Gaudichaude-Beaupre (La Bonite Expedition), Wilkes Expedition, and the Challenger. This was also the time when horticultural companies brought plants to Europe for trade (Mendoza, 1959). Collectors of the the Forestry Bureau in the 19th century, then the Bureau of Government Laboratories, and finally the Bureau of Science amassed a huge collection of specimens for the herbarium.

John Hayden, Botany Chair o temperate-zone plant enthusiasts, the orchid family seems more than a little strange. On the one hand, native orchids grow wild without assistance from people, they are rooted in the soil, and they survive freezing cold winter temperatures. On the other hand, the tropical or- chids that we encounter are ornamental plants, pampered by their human caregivers, cultured indoors in pots fi lled with fi r bark or other media designed to mimic the plants’ natural epiphytic habit, and, as a group, these ornamental tropical orchids have essentially zero tolerance to frost. Of course, their fl owers, fruits, and seeds defi ne them all as members of the orchid family, Orchidaceae, but from the perspective of how they actually live, and how we interact with them, native orchids and their tropical ornamental relatives seem utterly, profoundly, different.

(Corresponding author: Mark Arcebal K. A thorough survey was done from the base to the peak of the mountain Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary (MHRWS) to record and identify the orchid species. MHRWS harbors 45 species of orchids, 23 of them are Philippine endemic, a few may be undescribed. About 53% are epiphytes and 47% are terrestrial. The remarkable richness of orchids found in the present study highlights the importance for conservation of flora in MHRWS and other mountains and forests reserves in Mindanao. Most species (ca. 500 in 30 genera) are found in the Old World, usually in montane forests. Generally they are known as jewel orchids because some taxa [especially in the genera Anoectochilus Blume (1825: 411), Ludisia Richard (1825: 437), and Macodes (Blume 1825: 407) Lindley (1840: 496)] have gold to silver coloured veining on the leaves. Zeuxine pulchra (King & Pantling 1896: 127) was described from Sikkim, India by King and Pantling (1896: 127), then illustrated by them in the majestic ‘The orchids of the Sikkim-Himalaya’ (King & Pantling 1898). It is a beautiful but small terrestrial orchid with reddish to blackish, white-striped, roundish leaves, and a slender spike of two to four flowers. It was not seen in India again for over 75 years until Pradhan (1987) received a few specimens in his collection from Khasi Hills, Meghalaya in 1974, and then Rao (2008) recorded it from Arunachal Pradesh. THAI FOR. BULL. (BOT.) 41: 145–156. 2013. Is it really worthwhile revising the same fl ora repeatedly? A case study in Thai Orchidaceae HENRIK Æ. PEDERSEN1 ABSTRACT. For many purposes, scientifi c Floras (dealing with one, several or all plant families on a national or regional scale) are the most intensively used surveys and identifi cation tools for species of vascular plants. Flora of Thailand will be the fi rst real stan- dard Flora to cover all families of fl owering plants in Thailand. Nevertheless, the Thai representatives of a number of plant groups have undergone one or more revisions previously. Is it worthwhile revising such groups again for Flora of Thailand – and would it even make sense to start thinking of a second edition? To throw some light on this, I compared three successive revisions of the or- chid subfamily Orchidoideae in Thailand (published in 1958–1964, 1977–1978 and 2011, respectively). The series of revisions ex- hibited a progressive increase in the net number of accepted taxa. The relative increase was highest from the fi rst to the second revi- sion, but still substantial from the second to the third. The net results obscured an even higher number of changes (additions end exclusions of taxa) that partly neutralized each other – and other changes were in themselves neutral in relation to the net number of taxa accepted. Classifi cation at species level, but not at genus level, tended to stabilize over time. Altogether, the results demonstrate that both the second and the third revision were worthwhile indeed, as each of them provided comprehensive changes (arguably improvements) compared to the latest previous revision.
