The Minnesota Seaside Station near Port Renfrew, British Columbia: A Photo Essay Erik A. Moore and Rebecca Toov* n 1898, University of Minnesota botanist Josephine Tilden, her sixty-year-old mother, and a field guide landed their canoe on Vancouver Island at the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This Iconcluded one journey – involving three thousand kilometres of travel westward from Minneapolis – and began another that filled a decade of Tilden’s life and that continues to echo in the present. Inspired by the unique flora and fauna of her landing place, Tilden secured a deed for four acres (1.6 hectares) along the coast at what came to be known as Botanical Beach in order to serve as the Minnesota Seaside Station (Figure 1). Born in Davenport, Iowa, and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Josephine Tilden attended the University of Minnesota and completed her undergraduate degree in botany in 1895. She continued her graduate studies there, in the field of phycological botany, and was soon ap- pointed to a faculty position (the first woman to hold such a post in the sciences) and became professor of botany in 1910. With the support of her department chair Conway MacMillan and others, Tilden’s research laboratory became the site of the Minnesota Seaside Station, a place for conducting morphological and physiological work upon the plants and animals of the west coast of North America. It was inaugurated in 1901, when some thirty people, including Tilden, MacMillan, departmental colleagues, and a researcher from Tokyo, spent the summer there.1 * Special thanks to this issue’s guest editors, Alan D. -

Box 475, West Boothbay Harbor, Maine 04575 USA In this paper, I review what is currently known of phylogenetic relationships of heterokont and haptophyte algae. Heterokont algae are a monophyletic group that is classi®ed into 17 classes and represents a diverse group of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial algae. Classes are distinguished by morphology, chloroplast pigments, ultrastructural features, and gene sequence data. Electron microscopy and molecular biology have contributed signi®cantly to our understanding of their evolutionary relationships, but even today class relationships are poorly understood. Haptophyte algae are a second monophyletic group that consists of two classes of predominately marine phytoplankton. The closest relatives of the haptophytes are currently unknown, but recent evidence indicates they may be part of a large assemblage (chromalveolates) that includes heterokont algae and other stramenopiles, alveolates, and cryptophytes. Heter- okont and haptophyte algae are important primary producers in aquatic habitats, and they are probably the primary carbon source for petroleum products (crude oil, natural gas). Heterokont algae are a monophyletic group that includes all (Phaeophyceae) by Linnaeus (1753), and shortly thereafter, photosynthetic organisms with tripartite tubular hairs on the microscopic chrysophytes (currently 5 Oikomonas, Anthophy- mature ¯agellum (discussed later; also see Wetherbee et al., sa) were described by MuÈller (1773, 1786). Sogin Nucleotide ssu and lsu rDNA sequences of all major lineages of autotrophic (Ochrophyta) and heterotrophic (Bigyra and Pseudofungi) heterokonts were combined with amino acid sequences from four protein-coding genes (actin, b-tubulin, cox1 and hsp90) in a multigene approach for resolving the relationship between heterokont lineages. Applying these multigene data in Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses improved the heterokont tree compared to previous rDNA analyses by placing all plastid-lacking heterotrophic heterokonts sister to Ochrophyta with robust support, and divided the heterotrophic heterokonts into the previously recognized phyla, Bigyra and Pseudofungi. Our trees identified the heterotrophic heterokonts Bicosoecida, Blastocystis and Labyrinthulida (Bigyra) as the earliest diverging lineages. -

525 ARTICLE Finnish botanists and mycologists in the Arctic1 Henry Väre Abstract: Finnish botanists and mycologists have studied Arctic areas and timberline regions since the beginning of the 18th century. Most expeditions to the Kola Peninsula were made between 1800 and 1917 and until 1945 to Lapponia petsamoënsis on the western rim of the Kola Peninsula. Since those years, these areas have been part of the Soviet Union or Russia. Svalbard and Newfoundland and Labrador have been studied repeatedly as well, Svalbard since the 1860s and Newfoundland and Labrador since the 1930s. This article focus- es on Finnish collections. These are deposited in the herbaria of Helsinki, Turku, and Oulu universities, except materials from the Nordenskiöld expeditions, which were mainly deposited in Stockholm. Concerning the Kola Peninsula, collections at Helsinki are the most extensive. The exact number of specimens is not known, but by rough estimation, the number is about 60 000, with an additional 110 000 observations included in the data- base. These expeditions have provided material to describe 305 new taxa to science, viz. 47 algae, 78 bryophytes, 25 fungi, 136 lichens, and 19 vascular plants. This number is an underestimate, as many new species have been described in several separate taxonomic arti- cles. At least 63 persons have contributed to making these collections to Finnish herbaria. Of those, 52 are of Finnish nationality. Key words: bryophytes, fungi, vascularplants, Finnish, Arctic. Heterokonts are evolutionarily important gyristea cl. nov. of Ochrophyta as once thought. The as the most nutritionally diverse eukaryote supergroup zooflagellate class Bicoecea (perhaps the ancestral and the most species-rich branch of the eukaryotic phenotype of Bigyra) is unexpectedly diverse and a kingdom Chromista. Ancestrally photosynthetic/ major focus of our study. Genetically rophyta; the non-photosynthetic Pseudofungi; and diverse Caecitellus is probably related to Anoeca, Bigyra (now comprising subphyla Opalozoa, Bicoecia, Symbiomonas and Cafeteria (collectively Anoecales Sagenista). A checklist and distributional analysis of marine algal species collected as vouchers during the CHIA-EVOS studies. Injured Resource/Service: Intertidal communities: macrobenthic marine algae or seaweeds. ABSTRACT During the CHIA-EVOS studies, intense investigations were carried out on the intertidal algal communities of Prince William Sound, Kenai, Kodiak, and the Alaska Peninsula. As a byproduct of these studies, thorough voucher collections were made of the algal species present in more than 100 transect areas used for the study. The 7,300 voucher specimens were identified to species, curated, and cataloged, but no money was available at the time for publishing the wealth of information on algal biodiversity and distribution they provided. For this study, we will use these data to prepare regional checklists and biogeographic analyses of the species discovered and finally make available these critical habitat data for restoration and conservation efforts in Alaska. Prepared 06/07/2005 1 Project ______ INTRODUCTION Macrobenthic marine algae or seaweeds form the base of the food chain in nearly all rocky intertidal and shallow subtidal communities. In areas where they flourish, they also benefit both the structural and chemical environment. Nearshore marine animals are all at least partially dependent on algae for survival, and the environmental stresses that impact the algae also impact these members of the higher trophic levels. -

Nasjonsrelaterte stedsnavn på Svalbard Hvilke nasjoner har satt flest spor etter seg? NOR-3920 Oddvar M. Ulvang Mastergradsoppgave i nordisk språkvitenskap Fakultet for humaniora, samfunnsvitenskap og lærerutdanning Institutt for språkvitenskap Universitetet i Tromsø Høsten 2012 Forord I mitt tidligere liv tilbragte jeg to år som radiotelegrafist (1964-66) og ett år som stasjonssjef (1975-76) ved Isfjord Radio1 på Kapp Linné. Dette er nok bakgrunnen for at jeg valgte å skrive en masteroppgave om stedsnavn på Svalbard. Seks delemner har utgjort halve mastergradsstudiet, og noen av disse førte meg tilbake til arktiske strøk. En semesteroppgave omhandlet Norske skipsnavn2, der noen av navna var av polarskuter. En annen omhandlet Språkmøte på Svalbard3, en sosiolingvistisk studie fra Longyearbyen. Den førte meg tilbake til øygruppen, om ikke fysisk så i hvert fall mentalt. Det samme har denne masteroppgaven gjort. Jeg har også vært student ved Universitetet i Tromsø tidligere. Jeg tok min cand. philol.-grad ved Institutt for historie høsten 2000 med hovedfagsoppgaven Telekommunikasjoner på Spitsbergen 1911-1935. Jeg vil takke veilederen min, professor Gulbrand Alhaug for den flotte oppfølgingen gjennom hele prosessen med denne masteroppgaven om stedsnavn på Svalbard. Han var også min foreleser og veileder da jeg tok mellomfagstillegget i nordisk språk med oppgaven Frå Amarius til Pardis. Manns- og kvinnenavn i Alstahaug og Stamnes 1850-1900.4 Jeg takker også alle andre som på en eller annen måte har hjulpet meg i denne prosessen. Dette gjelder bl.a. Norsk Polarinstitutt, som velvillig lot meg bruke deres database med stedsnavn på Svalbard, men ikke minst vil jeg takke min kjære Anne-Marie for hennes tålmodighet gjennom hele prosessen.
