Rousseau’nun dillerin kökeni konusundaki fikirleri, kuzey/güney dilleri konusundaki ayrımı vs. onun toplum durumları olarak belirttiği vahşilik, barbarlık ve uygarlık durumları ile koşut olarak ele aldığı düşüncelerdir. Derrida yazı ve söz karşıtlığını, bu karşıtlıkta söze tanınan ayrıcalığı ve yine bulunuş metafiziğine ait olarak düşündüğü dillerin kökeni arayışını eleştirir. Bu çalışmada, önce, Derrida’nın dil, söz ve yazı hakkındaki düşünceleri ile birlikte différance, iz, déconstruction, bulunuş metafiziği üzerinde durulacaktır. Daha sonra Rousseau’nun dilin kökenine ilişkin düşünceleri incelenip, ardından Derrida’nın Rousseau eleştirileri açıklanacaktır. Derrida’nın Gramatoloji’de Rousseau üzerine yazdıkları bağlamında Rousseau’nun metinlerinin Rousseau’nun demek istediğinden çok başka şeyler ortaya koyduğu, Rousseau’nun bağlanmak istediği metafiziği aslında kendisinin yıktığı gösterilmeye çalışılacaktır. Sonuçta dillerin kökeni ve daha genel olarak köken fikrinin bir yanılgı olduğu düşünülebilir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Rousseau, Derrida, Dillerin Kökeni, Yazı-söz, Différance. Many philosophers have had (or deliberately acquired) the linguistic equipment to understand philosophical texts written in languages other than their own, but in most cases the reception of foreign-language philosophy has depended on translations. Indeed, some philosophers would hardly have had any reception at all without translations (how many of Kierkegaard’s readers outside Scandinavia read him in the original Danish?).1 This chapter will address some of the specific questions associated with the translation of philosophical texts. After a historical overview of some of the key translations that have changed the course of the development of philosophy, I will focus on three questions: ‘why translate philosophy?’, ‘who translates philosophy?’ and ‘how to translate philosophy?’. Historical perspectives The history of philosophical translation in the west begins in the first century BCE with Roman translations and adaptations of Greek philosophy into Latin, and the creation of a new philosophical vocabulary in order to do so. As in most other cultural spheres, Roman philosophy exhibits a self-conscious and deferential desire to emulate prestigious Greek models (Seele 1995). Lucretius’ (c. 99 – c. 55 BCE) epic didactic poem De rerum natura [On the Nature of Things] seeks to introduce Roman readers to Epicurean philosophy through a 1 free adaptation of Epicurus’ Περὶ Φύσεως [Peri Physeos, On Nature] with an admixture of paraphrase and translation (Clay 1983, Sedley 1998).

The word is closely related to stupor and stupidity, and means something like the production of the state or condition of stupor. Yet the more positive word stupendous also derives from stupeo, stupere, to be struck by amazement, struck perhaps to the point of stupefaction. No doubt this ambivalent root stup-, the Greek tuvptw, will return to haunt us, but for the moment it is the stupid side of stupefaction that concerns me. In any case, to be expert in the workings of stupefaction would not be so fortunate a thing. Imagine the comments I might overhear in the hallway as I am leaving: —Now, there’s a man who clearly knows whereof he speaks! What a perfect confluence of theory and practice, of the constative and the performative! He doesn’t simply talk about it, he incorporates stupefaction through and through. Let me hope, then, for a relative lack of success. The questions I want to raise begin with a conversation I had some years ago with a normally congenial and yet at that moment very angry man. He was a fruit merchant from Trieste, on holiday and staying at my pension. He had explained to me, before he became angry, that he did not own the fruit stand in the central market where he worked: he was a simple man—he carried the crates, not the money bags.
