Final revision received: January 25, 2019. Accepted: February 4, 2019 Abstract Immunity is an important mechanism of protection against pathogens and parasites. One factor that can influence immunity is mating. During mating, male-derived materials are transferred to females, and the physical contact also involves the potential risk of sexually transmitted infections, and wound- ing. Thus, mating can challenge a female’s immune system. This review focuses on exploring how immunity and mating interact in female insects. Although mating has been shown to cause female immune responses in several species, the responses do not always match the observed resistance to pathogens/parasites. Mating up-regulates female immune responses while female resistance is reduced compared to virgin females in some species, and vice versa in other taxa. We discuss why mismatches occur and why post-mating female resistance differs among species, and suggest that measured im- mune responses may not correlate with female resistance. Also, the mating system will play a major role. Polyandrous mating systems can generate intense post-mating sexual conflict, which can im- pose high costs of mating on females. Reduced female post-mating resistance may be due to direct suppression of female immunity by males. -

Produced using a pair of pygidial glands, over 250 chemical constituents have been characterized across the family thus far, many of which are considered allomones. Over the past century, our knowledge of Carabidae exocrine chemistry has increased substantially, yet the role of these defensive compounds in mediating behavior other than repelling predators is largely unknown. It is also unclear whether non-defensive compounds produced by ground beetles mediate conspecific and heterospecific interactions, such as sex- aggregation pheromones or kairomones, respectively. Here we review the current state of non-exocrine Carabidae semiochemistry and behavioral research, discuss the importance of semiochemical research including but not limited to allomones, and describe next-generation methods for elucidating the underlying genetics and evolution of chemically- mediated behavior. BOOK OF ABSTRACTS Tullia Zetto – short history of a gentle mind June 2010, Pollino National Park Tullia Zetto was born in Trieste 1949, January 15, and graduated in Natural Sciences 1972 at the University of the same city. After a short parenthesis in planarian regeneration research and fish endocrinology, she turned to carabid beetles and their biology, encouraged also by her husband Pietro Brandmayr, who worked as independent and voluntary researcher of entomology in the Institute of Zoology. In the years 1974-1980 she was active as granted research assistant of Comparative Anatomy for Biology and Natural Sciences, focusing at the same time on larval biology of this large beetle family, that shelters still so many incredible predatory and behavioural adaptations. Several approaches were especially successful in investigating larval feeding both in predatory ground beetles species, as well as in phytophagous Harpalines, among them practically all the most important Ophonus taxa living in Italy. -

This compound was identifed as 3-methyl-1-(methylthio)-2-butene by a comparison of its mass spectrum, and chromatographic properties with those of a chemically synthesized standard. Although a few sulfur compounds are known from insect secretions, this sulfur-bearing isoprene derivative has not been characterized previously from any arthropod source. Additional components in the defensive section include acetic, propanoic, isobutyric, butanoic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, tiglic and benzoic acids, and 11-tricosene. Samples prepared from specimens of Ceroglossus chilensis Eschscholtz showed methacrylic, ethacrylic, and other acids. However, 3-methyl-1-(methylthio)-2-butene was not detected in the defensive fuid of C. chilensis. These carabid as- semblages are characterized by a high incidence of endemic small-sized, low dispersal, highly stenotopic (hygrophilic), and trophycally specialized species. To evaluate the influence of anthropogenic disturbance on these insects, we compared carabid assemblage of an old undisturbed forest (65-170y, wilderness landscape) with that of a younger, partly grazed stand (40-60y, cropland landscape). The carabid assemblage of the disturbed stand was characterized by a higher number of species, but showed a lower incidence of zoophagous special- ists and brachypterous beetles, with many species probably coming from an adjacent cropland. However, the disturbed stand maintains almost 80% of the core species found in the older forest, which suggests that these insects are not particularly sensitive to disturbance factors represented by periodic wood harvesting and extensive cattle grazing. -

Di fronte a fenomeni come i cambiamenti climatici e altri fattori di disturbo causati dalle attività antropiche, è di fondamentale importanza monitorare e controllare lo stato di stabilità degli ecosistemi. I Coleotteri Carabidi, buoni bioindicatori, attraverso la loro struttura di comunità, l’analisi dei gruppi funzionali presenti e la sensibilità alle variazioni ambientali riscontrabile nell’analisi morfometrica, fornisce degli indicatori utili per valutare la conservazione degli habitat e per contribuire ad identificare cambiamenti altrimenti non rilevabili fra ambienti in apparenza simili. L’analisi della biodiversità viene migliorata nella sua valutazione, dall’integrazione di tali fattori, che esaltano il ruolo funzionale delle singole specie della zoocenosi. 3 Abstract Resilience, stability and resistence of forest ecosystems are the main properties providing the conservation of those habitats and allowing the maintenance of processes essential for the “ecosystem services” supply. In front of climate change and other disturbances coming from human activities, it is of fundamental importance to watch and check stability status of ecosystems. Ground beetles, good bioindicators, by their community composition, functional groups and morphometric sensitivity, provide indicators on habitat conservation evaluation and contribute to identify little changes among areas looking similar. -

The phenoloxidase activity was activated by trypsin and inhibited by phenoloxidase activity specific inhibitor phenylthiourea. Our results demonstrated that both in males and females, there were no significant differences in the basal phenoloxidase activity between reproductive and virgin beetles, while the total phenoloxidase activity increased significantly in virgin specimens. Thus, resources seem to be invested to increase the humoral response in pre-reproductive phase forming a barrier against pathogens and preserving the fecundity and longevity of both sexes. The hemolymph DOPA- MBTH assay on polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis showed a high activity of monomeric form with an apparent molecular weight of 90 kDa and a dimer of about 170 kDa, also multimeric bands were present in both sexes.
