  • Project Summary 1
Proposed Road Tunnel between Tikujiniwadi (Thane) & Borivali (Mumbai) in Maharashtra, India PROJECT SUMMARY 1. INTRODUCTION Thane Ghodbundar Road (SH-42) is a major link road connecting Mumbai-Ahmadabad Road (NH-8) part of Golden Quadrilateral near Ghodbundar to Mumbai-Agra Road (NH-3) near Kapurbawadi. This link passes through Municipal Limits of Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation area from Ch.00/000 to Ch.04/400 and thereafter it passes through Thane city urban area from Ch.04/400 to Ch.14/900. This is an important East-West link and carries heavy commercial traffic between NH-3 and NH-8. This road faces massive traffic congestion at various spots during peak traffic time. Congestion of traffic causes undesired burning of automobile fuel, which is a national loss in addition to the contribution of pollution, which would be a contributing factor for air quality in the adjacent Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Keeping in view, these factors in addition to reducing travel time and easy access between Thane and Western suburbs of Mumbai, it is proposed to construct twin tube 3 lane tunnel between Thane and Borivali under Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The Maharashtra State Road development Corporation (MSRDC) is proposing to construct Twin tube, 3 Lanes (each side) highway tunnel of about 10.8 km, which passes through below the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), connecting Western Express Highway (WEH) near Borivali and Ghodbunder road (of Thane) Near Tikujiniwadi. The feasibility of tunnel boring machine technology will be explored for doing the tunneling work as it causes very low vibrations and will have minimal impact on the surface environment.

  • 5.1.1 Road Infrastructure
    5. URBAN TRANSPORTATION 5.1. Existing Situation 5.1.1 Road Infrastructure a. Roads: The road length in Mumbai is about 2,000 km, comprising of about 1,950 km of MCGM maintained roads and about 50 km of State Highways (23.55 km of Eastern Express Highway from Sion to Thane and 25.33 km of Western Express Highway from Bandra to Dahisar). All the roads in the city are surfaced, with about 17.5 per cent concretized and the rest black-topped. The structural condition of the roads is generally very good, though the riding surface deteriorates during monsoons as witnessed during the unprecedented rains and flooding during the rains of July 2005. MCGM carries routine pre-monsoon works in order to reduce the damage due to rains. A key issue, though is the digging of roads by utility agencies / companies for laying utility lines throughout the year, which after road restoration leaves the road in a bad condition. Table 20: Road Length in Greater Mumbai Western Suburbs Eastern Suburbs Sl Type of Road Surface Island City (km) Total (km) (km) (km) 1 Concrete 115.747 127.663 107.413 350.823 2 Black Topped 390.721 799.990 399.638 1,590.349 Total 506.468 927.653 507.051 1,941.172 b. Flyovers and Bridges: Currently MCGM maintains 11 flyovers, 47 ROBs and 104 bridges. In addition, for pedestrian facilitation MCGM has constructed 68 foot-over-bridges (FOB) and 28 pedestrian subways. As a measure to improve the road infrastructure to facilitate smooth traffic flow, a Committee appointed by the Government of Maharashtra had recommended the construction of 55 flyovers.

  • Urban Transport Unlocking the Realty Potential
RESEARCH URBAN TRANSPORT UNLOCKING THE REALTY POTENTIAL MUMBAI METROPOLITAN REGION INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT ANALYSIS TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 4 How does the MMR and Mumbai city compare with each other? 6 What are the characteristics of the residential micro-markets in the MMR? 6 What drives the MMR residential market? 9 What are the implications of the infrastructure development in the MMR? 11 Metro rail corridors 12 Coastal Road project 14 Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) project 20 “URBAN TRANSPORT” UNLOCKING THE REALTY POTENTIAL RESEARCH Introduction Sustaining the country’s rapid urbanisation would require corresponding infrastructure development. The need for infrastructure development, particularly urban transport, in a megapolis like Mumbai, is unquestionable. While the benefits of urban transport in terms of enhanced connectivity and an improved quality of life have been widely recognised, unlocking the realty potential in terms of better development prospects is also an interesting arena for stakeholders. In fact, the high price gradient of `3,000–100,000 per sq ft for residential property in the MMR makes it even more important to stay ahead of time and decipher the impact of infrastructure development on property demand and the resultant impact on prices. With this white paper, we provide an assessment of select urban transport projects that are high on the state government’s priority list and also have an ambitious yet attainable completion target of 2019, which is within the term of the present government. Accordingly, an assessment of the metro corridors of Dahisar West–DN Nagar, Andheri East–Dahisar East, the Coastal Road and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link has been presented in the report.

  • Transport Sector Dynamics and Its Contribution to Urban Health Burden in a Rapidly Growing Metropolitan Areas of India
Transport Sector Dynamics and Its Contribution to Urban Health Burden in a Rapidly growing Metropolitan Areas of India Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chief Scientist and Head National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Mumbai Zonal Center Email: [email protected]; [email protected] Introduction The transportation sector could be attributed to wide range of issues viz. air pollution, noise, congestion, accidents and increased travel time as also responsible for quality of life. Asian developing cities, with the expected increase in levels of industrialization and further economic growth, would eventually have to target air pollution control and sustainable transport issues more vigorously than before in the short as well as the long term. The travel behavior and the mode of transport (transformed to motorized transport) is not only increasing the vehicle kilometers traveled per day, but also exerting pressure on the limited infrastructure, leading to traffic congestion, idling, and pollution. The rapid growth in the number of vehicles, increased fuel combustion, poor traffic management, and lack of sufficient public transport has led to rapid deterioration of air quality and consequent increase in diseases burden. The extended commuting times due to congestion and expansion of the city areas results in longer exposure times to increasing pollution and health impacts. Source: SIM working paper series, SIM-10-2009 Share of Transport Emissions Contributing to the Measured Ambient Air Quality in Asia At the global level, there is a general consensus that oil is going to remain a major transport fuel, and that the world has to confront the environmental implications of oil-based transport, for at least the next three to four decades.
