The Flowers this Morning are from Liv Ramstad in appreciation of all the tutors and substitute tutors who have worked with the children at South Avondale Elementary.

Let’s Read! Service Notes Sept. 15, 2019

Prelude: Medley – Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah / It’s a Small World by Allie Wrubel and Ray Gilbert / Robert and Richard Sherman - Zip- A-Dee-Doo-Dah was composed for the 1946 Disney live action and ani- mated movie . Although it was influenced by the chorus of a pre-Civil War folk song that many consider racially offensive, Zip-A- Dee-Doo-Dah has become a beloved children’s song and is ranked num- ber 47 on the American Film Institute’s survey of top tunes in American cinema. http://mentalfloss.com/article/60021/10-zip-dee-doo-dah- facts-about-song-south; http://www.songofthesouth.net/. It’s a Small World is the theme song written to accompany the ride of the same name that premiered at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. The ride features over 300 audio-animatronic children in traditional costumes from cul- tures around the world, frolicking in a spirit of international unity, and singing the attraction's title song, which has a theme of global peace. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It%27s_a_Small_World#cite_note-iasw- a2z-10

Chalice Lighting: Chalice Lighting by Rev. Christian Schmidt and Alexis Capen - Rev. Christian Schmidt is senior co-minister, with his wife, Rev. Kristin Grassel Schmidt, of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley. He grew up in Texas and has served congregations in Mas- sachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, and California. Alexis Capen is the Liberal Religious Exploration Assistant and Youth Programs Coordina- tor at First Parish Unitarian Universalist in Needham (Massachusetts). https://www.uua.org/worship/words/chalice-lighting/childrens- sunday; https://uuneedham.org/ Musical Selection: The A.B.C. by Charles Bradlee - The A.B.C. is one of the best-known English language alphabet songs, and perhaps the one most frequently referred to as "the alphabet song", especially in the United States. The song was first copyrighted in 1835 by the Boston-based music publisher Charles Bradlee, and given the title The A.B.C., a German air with variations for the flute with an easy accompaniment for the piano forte. The musical arrangement was attributed to Louis Le Maire (sometimes Lemaire), an 18th-century composer. The theme is that used by Mozart for his piano variations, Ah, vous dirai-je, maman and is also the tune for Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and Baa, Baa, Black Sheep.

Hymn #413: Go Now in Peace by Natalie Sleeth – Natalie Sleeth (1930-1992) was a United Methodist composer of choral music and sa- cred and inspirational verses. She wrote this piece after attending an Orff instruments workshop. The text is based on Luke 2:29.

Musical Selection: Do-Re-Mi by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II - Do-Re-Mi is a show tune from the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music. Within the story, it is used by Maria to teach the notes of the major musical scale to the Von Trapp children who learn to sing for the first time, even though their father disallowed frivolity after their mother's death. Each syllable of the musi- cal solfège system appears in the song's lyrics, sung on the pitch it names. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do-Re-Mi

Meditation Response: Meditation on Breathing by Sarah Dan Jones - Sarah Dan is the past President of the Association of Unitarian Universalist Music Ministries and has traveled around the country pre- senting workshops and worship around Building Community Through Music. Living in Northern New England, Sarah Dan is currently the Director of Music at Starr King UU Fellowship in Plymouth, NH. Written in re- sponse to the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Meditation on Breathing has been sung all over the country at various Unitarian Universalist (UU) churches and at peace rallies and marches. It was heard on the Virginia Tech campus after the massacre there in 2007. http://sarahdanjones.com/; https://www.uuberks.org/breathing-sing- out-love.

Offertory: Twelve Variations on “Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman,” K 265 by Wolfgang Mozart This set of variations, published in 1785, are based upon the French folk song Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman (English: Ah, Mother, If I Could Tell You), with the same melody as that of the English-language nursery song “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”

Musical Selection: You Are My Sunshine by Paul Rice or Oliver Hood - You Are My Sunshine is a song popularized by Jimmie Da- vis and Charles Mitchell in 1939. It has been declared one of the state songs of Louisiana because of its association with Davis, a country mu- sic singer and governor of the state in the years 1944–1948 and 1960– 1964. While Davis and Mitchell are the credited songwriters, Davis was never known to actually claim authorship, as he bought the song and rights from Paul Rice and put his own name on it. Descendants and associates of Oliver Hood, a LaGrange, Georgia, musician who collabo- rated with Rice, state that Hood wrote the song in the early 1930s and first performed it at a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention at La- Grange, Georgia, in 1933. https://www.salon.com/2013/05/26/you_are_my_sunshine_how_a_m audlin_song_became_a_childrens_classic/; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Are_My_Sunshine.

Postlude: The Bare Necessities by Terry Gilkyson - The Bare Neces- sities is a song featured in the Disney film The Jungle Book written by Terry Gilkyson, and originally sung by Phil Harris as Baloo and Bruce Rei- therman as Mowgli. It was written for an earlier, rejected, draft of the movie. It was the only song from that version that was kept in the film at the request of the Sherman Brothers (who wrote the other songs for the new version of the film). The arrangement heard in the film was not done by the Sherman Brothers, but rather by Van Dyke Parks. https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/The_Bare_Necessities
