TRAFFIC SURVEY AND SUPPORT DIVISION August 2019 © THE GOVERNMENT OF THE HONG KONG SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGION SUMMARY During the year 2018, the annual average daily traffic (A.A.D.T.) in the territory showed the following changes as compared with that of 2017: General There were 784 434 vehicles licensed in Hong Kong at the end of 2018, representing an increase of 2.38% when compared with the corresponding figure in 2017. This total accounted for 90.7% of the number of registered vehicles. The highest percentage increase was found in private light bus, with a growth of 9.0%. There were 565 213 private cars licensed at the end of 2018. The number of franchised buses licensed was 6 151, an increase of 2.8% over 2017. The total number of goods vehicles licensed in 2018 was 117 567, showing an increase of 2.5% over 2017. During the year, road travel in the territory amounted to 38.25 million vehicle- kilometres per day. Of this total, 6.00 million vehicle-kilometres occurred on Hong Kong Island while 8.53 million vehicle-kilometres and 23.72 million vehicle- kilometres occurred in Kowloon and the New Territories respectively.

Railway Service Performance 2. Carrying more than 4 million passengers on average each weekday (i.e. Monday to Friday), the MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) is dedicated to operating a safe, reliable and efficient railway service for the people of Hong Kong. 3. From 1 January to 31 May 2012, out of the more than 733,000 train trips operated in the heavy rail network (comprising the Kwun Tong Line, Tsuen Wan Line, Island Line, Tsueng Kwan O Line, East Rail Line, West Rail Line, Ma On Shan Line, Tung Chung Line, Disneyland Resort Line and Airport Express), the number of delays of 8 minutes or more totalled 82. The figures categorised according to the cause of delay are as follows: 1 January to 31 May 2012 Equipment failure 48 Human factor 5 Passenger behaviour and 29 external factor Total 82 4. It can be noted that among the 82 delays in the heavy rail network, 78 delays were between 8 and 30 minutes; 3 were between 31 and 60 minutes; and there was one delay that exceeded one hour, which was the West Rail Line incident causing 93 minute delay and suspension of train service between Nam Cheong Station and Tsuen Wan West Station on 3 May 2012. Investigation showed that the incident was caused by a piece of composite synthetic gap filler which came loose from installations on the tunnel ceiling and came into contact with the 1 pantograph of the passing train.

TRAFFIC SURVEY AND SUPPORT DIVISION August 2018 © THE GOVERNMENT OF THE HONG KONG SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGION SUMMARY During the year 2017, the annual average daily traffic (A.A.D.T.) in the territory showed the following changes as compared with that of 2016: General There were 766 200 vehicles licensed in Hong Kong at the end of 2017, representing an increase of 2.8% when compared with the corresponding figure in 2016. This total accounted for 91.2% of the number of registered vehicles. The highest percentage increase was found in motor cycle, with a growth of 6.2%. There were 552 710 private cars licensed at the end of 2017. The number of franchised buses licensed was 5 982, an increase of 1.1% over 2016. The total number of goods vehicles licensed in 2017 was 114 663, showing an increase of 0.6% over 2016. During the year, road travel in the territory amounted to 37.44 million vehicle- kilometres per day. Of this total, 6.11 million vehicle-kilometres occurred on Hong Kong Island while 8.31 million vehicle-kilometres and 23.02 million vehicle- kilometres occurred in Kowloon and the New Territories respectively.

I. West Rail Overview 2. West Rail Phase I is a 30.5-km domestic twin-track passenger railway linking Nam Cheong in West Kowloon with Tuen Mun. It has nine stations and passes through five districts: Sham Shui Po, Kwai Tsing, Tsuen Wan, Yuen Long, and Tuen Mun. West Rail will interchange with the MTR system and KCRC’s Light Rail, forming an integrated rail network. 3. West Rail will serve 300,000 passengers a day on system opening in Autumn 2003. The patronage is forecast to grow to 500,000 a day by the Year 2011. 4. The key features of West Rail are as follows: - Journey time 30 minutes - Daily hours of operation 19 hours - Initial service 20 seven-car trains at 3-min intervals for peak hours, and 5-min to 8-min intervals for non-peak hours - Ultimate capacity 33 nine-car trains per hour at 105- second intervals, carrying 100,000 passengers per peak hour in one direction - Train capacity Maximum 335 passengers per car - Number of stations 9 - Size of 32.5 hectares Maintenance Centre - Construction Oct 1998 commencement date - Target opening date Autumn 2003 Page 1 of 8 5.
