From the BSBPA President It's an exciting time to be a part of Ballston Spa. Whether you're a resident or a business owner, you'll find more and more opportunities in our village. New stores and restaurants are opening. That means more options for residents to stay local and more chances for our businesses to send traffic to each other. I sometimes write a blog for the Times Union on happenings in our village and recently I commented on how few vacancies we currently have for retail. “Coming soon” signs have popped up all over the village and many are already open. These include Torso Lingerie Studio, opening in the former Genevieve’s space, The Vil- lage Barber and a second barber shop, Decadent Diva, a gourmet chocolate shop and a thrift shop/spiritual studies meeting room called Array of Hope. The old Chez Sophie diner car on Route 9 is the future home of Quintessence 2. The former Domino’s pizza place looks to be re-opening as a new eatery. Loca Luna Mexican grille is now open. And I am pleased to report that our most talked about vacancy, the former Manna’s Restaurant, has just been sold. The owner plans to rent the space to a retail tenant. Success brings on more success.

Of course, the BSBPA can't take credit for all of these improvements but you, our members, can take a great deal of pride in helping to foster a climate in our charming village that has made businesses want to open shop here. Your membership and your participation in our events allows us to highlight the best aspects of living and doing business in Ballston Spa. We put on free events for our residents both because it creates the type of community we want to live in and because bringing a crowd into the village helps our businesses find customers.

Consider our concert series in Wiswall Park. Naturally, many of those attending will do a bit of shopping before the show and some will grab food to go before or get dinner afterwards. This year we've partnered with WEQX 102.7 FM to kick our concert series up a notch. We'll promote the concerts on air and WEQX will present two of the bands this season. WEQX is able to book nationally-known acts that we otherwise could not. I'm thrilled that one of these will be Ra Ra Riot. If you don't know them, check them out at www.rarariot.com . They mix cello and violin into their alterna- tive rock. Bands like these are bound to bring in not just our residents but fans from across the capital region. You can help insure this success continues. If you're attending one of our events, invite your friends to join you. If they are residents but not members, ask why. A resident membership is just $25 a year. I know if my family went to just two free concerts or two free movies that's worth $25 to us easily. If you're able to be more involved, consider volun- teering to make one of our events happen. Everything the BSBPA does is done by volunteers. If money is easier to part with than your time, many of our bigger events like Concerts in the Park, Ballston Spa Film Festival and The Way We Were Car Show rely on sponsorship dollars to operate. In fact, both Concerts in the Park and Ballston Spa Film Festival need to finalize their sponsorships in the next few days.

So, thank you again for making all this possible and please see if you can get your friends involved too. Together we can do even more great things in our village. I'm sure we'll be hearing more and more people saying “B. Spa B. There”. Daniel DeFabio, BSBPA President Member Items Welcome to Our New Members

Make Your Mark on B. Spa You can help put Ballston Spa on the map -- literally. The Ballston Spa Business & Professional As- sociation is presenting an interactive street art project this summer. It follows on the success of the Ballston Rocks rocking chairs promotion a few years ago. This year, the “canvas” is shaped like the map marker you’d see in an online map and the slogan is “B. Spa B. There.”

Three options, available to purchase at Corina's Contemporary Jewelry, 89 Milton Avenue or online at www.ballston.org: Map Marker only - $50 Map Marker with Shepherd's Hook - $70 Deluxe Package of Map Marker, and cement weighted base with Shepherd's Hook - $100

Paint it or decorate it yourself or we can refer you to professional artists. Then register your marker, telling us about the art and where you’ll have it displayed and what website you’d like it to link to. Then we’ll issue you a QR code* that can be scanned by smart phones and pull up your web page. Your marker will also be shown on a printed map and an online version of the map. People can also find your marker by its number, not just by scanning the code. The deco- rated Markers should be ready to be put on display by May 27, 2011 The markers will be placed around the village for people to look at, interact with and enjoy all summer. This will be a great opportunity to display creative artwork, show- case historic sites, ecological areas and inform people about Ballston Spa businesses and community organizations. For more information, contact Eric Seplowitz at [email protected], Daniel DeFabio at [email protected] or the BSBPA office at [email protected] or 885-2772

*What are these checker board QR code thingies? They’re like bar codes. If you have a smart phone there’s an app for that. For iPhones try i-Nigma4. For Droids try Scan Life. Both apps are free. Then use your phone’s camera to scan a QR code and a website will pop up. Or maybe a video or a text message or a song.

A Riot in B. Spa? B. There! There's going to a be a riot in Ball- ston Spa. WEQX 102.7 FM presents major label recording artists Ra Ra Riot, who will perform Thursday, June 23, from 6-8 pm in Wiswall Park as the sea- son opening band in the Ballston Spa Busi- ness and Professional Association's free Con- certs in the Park series. Ra Ra Riot infuses alternative rock with cello and violin. Their song “Boy” was recently featured in an episode of USA network's “Royal Pains” entitled “A History of Violins”. Originally from Syracuse, Ra Ra Riot has toured the US, the UK , Japan and Iceland. They have played on Jimmy Kimmel Live, David Letterman and "Ra Ra Riot are a fun, quirky and Last Call with Carson Daly. They've played some of the biggest festivals in the country includ- ing Lollapalooza and Coachella and having them play Wiswall Park in Ballston Spa will be a unique way to experience one of the great indie bands of our time." Coincidently, their video for “Ghost Under Rocks”, set against an atlas and pep- pered with map markers, could hardly be a better fit with the BSBPA's current “B. Spa B. There” map marker campaign.

Other bands scheduled for summer 2011 include Ballston Spa Community Band (June 30) and Sonny & Perley (July 21). Look for more performers to be an- nounced soon for the rest of the series, including one more alternative rock band presented by WEQX.

The Concerts in the Park series is presented by the BSBPA on Thursdays, 6-8 pm, in Wiswall Park in historic downtown Ballston Spa from June 23 through August 25. All performances are free to the public thanks to the generous support of the fol- lowing sponsors: Saratoga Real Property, Ballston Spa Veterinary Clinic, The Adi- rondack Trust Company, Cole's Spa Body Works, Stewart's Shops, Sunmark Fed- eral Credit Union and Ballston Spa National Bank. This event is still seeking additional sponsors. Become a sponsor now and you could have your business mentioned in our radio ads on WEQX. To learn more, contact Roseanne Antolick [email protected]
