One of these fjords, Milford Sound, supports a large tourism industry that results in intense boat traffic. Bottlenose dolphins regularly visited Milford Sound and tour boats interacted with them during these visits. I studied the factors affecting the frequency of visits to Milford Sound by relating the residency pattern of dolphins in this fjord to oceanographic parameters and variations in boat traffic between December 1999 and February 2002. Boat traffic was the only variable that could explain the frequency of dolphin visits to Milford Sound. Dolphins spent less time in Milford Sound during seasons of intense boat traffic. Moreover, when dolphins visited this fjord, they spent more time at the entrance of the fjord when boat traffic was intense, out of the reach of tour boats. It seems that dolphins avoid Milford Sound when traffic is heavy. This avoidance could have long-term implications for the demography of the population. To answer these questions, I assessed the relationship between the pres- ence of bottlenose dolphins in Milford Sound, New Zealand, and boat traffic. Boat traffic is intense in Milford Sound and based on tourism (scenic cruise tour opera- tors). More than 8000 trips were under- taken in 2002. These tours operate year- round and seek to interact with dolphins when the animals visit the fjord. These interactions affect the behavioural state of these dolphins in the fjord, which tend to engage in a short-term horizontal avoid- ance strategy when interacting with boats (Lusseau 2004). Wide ranging photo-ID sur- veys (C. D. Rundgren unpubl. data) and incidental sightings show that the home range of the affected population of bot- tlenose dolphins spans over 7 fjords, from Lake McKerrow to Charles Sound (Fig. 1). Of these, only Milford Sound supports daily boat traffic. These fjords are relatively small (Fig. 1); Milford Sound is 15.7 km long and 1.6 km wide on average (Stanton & Pickard 1981). It is, therefore, easy to determine whether dolphins are present in the fjord or not on a daily basis. Four individuals out of between 45 and 55 dolphins in this population bear pro- peller scars resulting from collisions with boats (Lusseau et al. 2002). Of these 4 indi- viduals, 2 were hit during the present study in Milford Sound and one of them, a 2 wk old calf, disappeared after being hit. Mexican salt mines are recognized all over the world and are an important part of Mexican history.1 HISTORY OF SALT IN MEXICO he salt mining industry in Mexico experienced great changes in the last decade of the 19th century as people began consuming more and more salt. T History points out a series of sudden changes in the use of this product. For example, during the Mexican Revolution, which to a certain extent caused a drastic decrease in the demand for salt, it was necessary for the State to intervene in order to regulate and decrease the production of salt to avoid overproduction. After political and economic unrest caused by this revolution, Mexico began building a multitude of chemical plants, turning this industry into one of the main salt producing centers. As well, ever since the 50s, the idea to export salt to Japan was examined as Japan has a shortage of the product. Many plans were prepared with this in mind but were not carried out at the time because there was no real infrastructure for its transportation or for its production, which meant they could not guarantee meeting the demand. So it was decided that Mexico would begin building one of the largest solar salt plants in the world, with funds from foreign investment, in Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur.

ABSTRACT The Eastern North Pacific gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) is one population of large cetacean that has recovered from depletion resulting from commercial harvest in the mid- to late-1800s. It is believed that this population may be approaching, or possibly exceeding its carrying capacity as suggested by recent increases in mortality of all age and sex classes. Research on the breeding biology and phenology of gray whales that spend the winter in the coastal waters and lagoons of Baja California, Mexico has been conducted for many years. These studies contribute valuable information on the reproductive biology of this species, and the importance of their coastal lagoon habitats to their reproductive success. LADB Article Id: 053967 ISSN: 1054-8890 Japanese-mexican Company Cancels Plans To Construct Controversial Salt Processing Plant In Whale Sanctuary by LADB Staff Category/Department: Mexico Published: 2000-03-08 The Mexican-Japanese joint venture Exportadora de Sal (ESSA) has canceled plans to construct a controversial salt- processing plant near an internationally recognized wildlife sanctuary along the coast of Baja California Sur. The Japanese firm Mitsubishi owns 51% of the venture and the Mexican government 49%. ESSA had proposed constructing the plant near the San Ignacio Lagoon to supplement output at the company's existing salt-evaporation facility near the town of Guerrero Negro. The salt processed at the Guerrero Negro plant is primarily exported to Japan and other countries in the Pacific Rim. But Mexican and international environmental organizations had adamantly opposed ESSA's plans to construct the new plant, claiming that industrial discharge would harm the gray whale and other wildlife that live in the nearby Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve.
