Zoom Workshop on Streaming at Kendal on Hudson Handout for Nov. 20, 2020 Zoom Workshop on Streaming At Kendal on Hudson From the KoH Computer Committee 1) Introduction. What is streaming? Streaming is a way of receiving movies and other content from the world wide web. The content can be viewed on a TV, computer, tablet, or smart phone at a time and place of your choosing. 2) What do you need to do it? a. A plain computer with a high speed internet connection or b. A Smart TV that has built in internet access or c. a TV with at least one HDMI input slot. HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface and it refers to how all kinds of wonderful content gets from the world wide web to our TV or other digital device. An HDMI slot looks like this: plus d. a streaming device you can buy at Amazon, BestBuy or similar places, such as: i. Roku or ii. Firestick (can get one that has Alexa and talk into it) or iii. Apple TV or iv. Google Chrome device or v. A computer with an HDMI cable connected to a TV’s HDMI input port 3) How do you do it? a. With a smart TV. Call Anthony or Shawn if you need help. b. With a separate device: i. Plug the device into your TV with an HDMI connector or cable ii. Follow the directions that come with the device to connect it to your Router and set it up, or iii. Call Anthony to help you install it 1 4) Examples of free content and what requires payment or membership? a. Free: i. YouTube (with ads) ii. Pluto TV: ad-supported streaming service with more than 200 live and original channels iii. Tubi TV: TV shows and movies from Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM… iv. Facebook Watch v. NBC News Now vi. CBSN vii. CBSSPORTS viii. CHEDDAR: CNBC for millennials ix. CRACKLE: Shows and movies from Sony. x. Kanopy: Documentaries, classic and Indie films available through libraries. xi. Laugh Out Loud: Comedy streaming service b. Subscription: i. Netflix ii. Amazon Prime Video iii. Hulu iv. Disney Plus v. Apple TV Plus vi. HBO MAX vii. Peacock viii. PBS (obtained through Passport with a $60 or more annual contribution to local PBS) 5) How do you navigate the screen and get to the streaming source? Type in the title of the content you want. .

    Better Together! Invite a Friend to Church with a Facebook Watch Party By Rev. Chris Harris Last week I shared how our post-COVID ‘digital’ church has not only made it easy to invite people to church, but it’s made it even easier for your friends to say yes! After all, there is no drive, no getting dressed up, no anxiety about whether they will fit in and if they don’t like what they see, they can safely click away. In fact, studies show more than 60% of people who are invited to church will say ‘yes’ – and that was back when they had to actually come to the building. You can only imagine what the percentage is today! So how do you invite someone to our online service? One way of course is to simply email or text them our “Chruch at Home” webpage where they can watch live: www.CCCatHome.org But for some of your friends, that might seem a bit impersonal as they will be watching alone at home, rather than getting to sit next to you in your favorite pew where you can guide them through the service, answer their questions and explain what happens next. How to make it more personal? How about putting a monitor on the patio and host a porch watch party! Make it an event with great coffee and pastries delivered during the announcements or invite people to bring pre-packaged snacks. Let me know ahead of time and we can email you some “coffee hour conversation starters” to help encourage deeper reflection and conversation after the service.

This is in the context of increasing use and demand for online audiovisual content by the wider community, as well as growing use of audiovisual materials for teaching, learning, and research at academic institutions. It also aims to give an understanding of how well libraries are meeting the challenges of delivering audiovisual materials to users in an on-demand world. Methodology Twelve platforms—developed between 1996 and 2015—are evaluated against 23 user-centred criteria, divided into four core areas: retrieval functionality, user interface, collection qualities, and user support. Results The study found that not one of the platforms evaluated met all the evaluation criteria, and identified three key areas in the usability of thevideo digital libraries and catalogues: search and retrieval, technology, and structure, scope, and strategy.
