RET 1005, Respiratory Microbiology 1 hr., 1 cr., A review of microbiology as it relates to the profession of respiratory care. Topics include microbiological identification, surveillance, and equipment processing. RET 1024, Respiratory Therapy I 3 hrs., 3 crs., Prerequisite: Program acceptance. Corequisite: *RET1024L, *RET1832. This introductory course will cover the practice and basic concepts of respiratory vital signs, patient assessment, medical gas therapy, oxygen therapy, humidity, aerosol, and hyperinflation therapies. RET 1024L, Respiratory Therapy I Lab 4 hrs., 2 crs., $55.00 lab fee Corequisite: *RET1024, *RET1832. This lab complements the lecture in RET 1024. This course will introduce the student to the practice and basic concepts of respiratory therapy. Topics will include professional ethics, diversity, licensure and credentialing, infection control, vital signs, patient assessment, medical gas therapy, oxygen therapy, humidity, aerosol, and hyperinflation therapies. RET 1264, Respiratory Therapy II 3 hrs., 3 crs., Prerequisites: *RET1024, *RET1024L, *RET1832. Corequisites: RET1264L/1272L, RET1833. This course will cover the theory, practice and mastery of equipment used in hyperinflation therapy, pulmonary mechanics, bronchial hygiene therapies, medication nebulizer therapy, airway care, and arterial blood gas analysis. RET 1264L, Respiratory Therapy II Lab 4 hrs., 2 crs., $121.00 lab fee Prerequisites: *RET1024, *RET1024L, *RET1832. Corequisites: RET1264, RET1833. This lab complements the lecture in RET 1264. Through practice and performance tests the student will demonstrate the mastery of equipment used in Hyperinflation Therapy, Pulmonary Mechanics, Bronchial Hygiene Therapies, Medication Nebulizer Therapy, Airway Care, and Arterial Blood Gas Analysis. Simulations are used to practice information gathering and decision making in respiratory therapy scenarios. RET 1295, Clinical Respiratory Medicine I 1 hr., 1 cr., This course is an introduction to the study of pulmonary diseases including etiology, detection, treatment, prognosis of a variety of cardiopulmonary diseases. Case studies and simulations will be utilized to enhance student learning. RET 1350, Pulmonary Pharmacology I 1 hr., 1 cr., This course will introduce the student to pulmonary pharmacology with primary emphasis on medications used in the field of Respiratory Care. Principles of drug action, bronchodilators, mediator antagonists, and corticosteroids will be covered. RET 1483, Pulmonary Assessment I 2 hrs., 2 crs., Physician lectures on patient assessment, physical exams, chest x-rays, breath sounds, ABG, and PFT evaluations. RET 1485, Pulmonary Physiology 2 hrs., 2 crs., An introductory course covering the function of the respiratory system including ventilatory mechanics, gas transport, acid base physiology, neural/chemical regulation of breathing, ventilation perfusion relationships, and cardiac anatomy. 2017-2018 General Catalog 2 RET 1832, Respiratory Therapy Clinical I 4 hrs., 1 cr., Corequisites: RET1024, RET1024L. The primary emphasis for the clinic semester is to allow students the opportunity to become oriented to different clinical facilities, observing as many procedures as possible. All procedures in the clinical facility require completion of both a lab and clinical competency validation. Any hands on experience requires direct supervision from the clinical instructor and should be limited to hand washing, charting, medical terminology, basic patient assessment, vital signs, medical gas therapy, humidity, and aerosol. RET 1833, Respiratory Therapy Clinical II 8.533 hrs., 2 crs., Prerequisites: *RET1024, *RET1024L. Corequisites: RET1264, RET1264L/1272L. The primary emphasis for the second clinic semester is for the students to practice hands on skills learned in RET1264L/1272L in the following areas: hyperinflation therapy, pulmonary mechanics, bronchial hygiene therapies, medication nebulizer therapy, airway care, arterial blood gas analysis, and IPPB. All procedures in the clinical facility require completion of both a lab and clinical competency. Any hands on experience require direct supervision from the clinical instructor. RET 1930, Selected Topics Seminar I 1 hr., 1 cr., This course is intended for students to become familiar with the fundamental concepts of basic hemodynamic monitoring and interventional pulmonary procedures (bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, and thoracotomy). This subject material is an essential component for the assessment, care, and treatment of critically ill patients. RET 1933, Selected Topics Seminar IV 1 hr., 1 cr., In depth study of selected aspects of respiratory therapy through simulation exercises. RET 1934, Selected Topics Seminar V 1 hr., 1 cr., $7.00 lab fee This course provides the student Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. RET 1935, Selected Topics Seminar VI 1 hr., 1 cr., This course will cover the theory, procedures, and selected clinical practice of pulmonary function testing. RET 1936, Selected Topics Seminar VII 1 hr., 1 cr., This course will introduce the new and constantly changing concepts and procedures in respiratory care. RET 2007, Pulmonary Pharmacology II 3 hrs., 3 crs., Prerequisite: RET1350. This course will continue the study of pulmonary pharmacology to include anti-microbial agents, anti-smoking therapy, neonatal and pediatric drug therapy, critical care and cardiovascular drugs. RET 2234, Critical Thinking in Respiratory Care 1 hr., 1 cr., This course examines critical thinking, assessment, and evaluation techniques necessary in the development of respiratory care plans and therapist driven protocols. Corequisites: RET2280, RET2835. This course will prepare students to perform neonatal and infant assessment by recognizing congenital anomalies and managing infant mechanical ventilation. Lab simulations to practice skills required to pass the Neonatal Resuscitation program. RET 2292, Clinical Respiratory Medicine II 1 hr., 1 cr., The continued study of pulmonary disease from RET1295. The introduction of therapist-driven protocols (TDP's) along with an advanced level of understanding of pathophysiologic mechanisms activated throughout the respiratory system as a result of anatomic alterations, clinical manifestation of the disease process, and the management or treatment of the disease process. Case studies and simulations will also be utilized to enhance student learning. RET 2297, Pulmonary Assessment II 1 hr., 1 cr., Physician lectures covering assessment of the cardiovascular system, hematology, blood chemistry, and electrolytes. This course will prepare students to perform neonatal and infant assessment by recognizing congenital anomalies and managing infant mechanical ventilation. RET 2714L, Respiratory Therapy V Lab 2 hrs., 2 crs., $202.00 lab fee Prerequisites: *RET2280, *RET2280L, *RET2835. Corequisites: RET2714, RET2836. This lab compliments the lecture in RET2714 emphasizing the latest ventilation techniques for newborns. High Frequency Oscillation Ventilator is set up and titrated for the treatment of RDS (Respiratory Distress Syndrome). Lab simulations are key to this course to practice skills for NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program); pig dissection to include umbilical artery catheters and treatment of pneumothorax is included. RET 2834, Respiratory Therapy Clinical III 2 hrs., 2 crs., Prerequisites: *RET1264, *RET1264L/1272L, *RET1833. Corequisites: RET2878, RET2878L. Emphasis in on critical care procedures, continuous patient monitoring, introduction mechanical ventilation, review and interpretation of EKG's and ABGS. RET 2835, Respiratory Therapy Clinical IV 2 hrs., 2 crs., Prerequisites: *RET2878, *RET2878L. Corequisites: RET2280, RET2280L. Emphasis is on critical care procedures, mechanical ventilation, review and interpretation of electrocardiogram strips, hemodynamic monitoring, capnography, ventilation waveforms, and management of patients in critical care settings. Interaction is encouraged between the student and other health care providers at the patient's bedside. RET 2836, Respiratory Therapy Clinical V 12.8 hrs., 3 crs., Prerequisites: *RET2280, *RET2280L, *RET2835. Corequisites: RET2714, RET2714L. This course consists of 192 supervised clinical hours. The focus is on pediatric and neonatal critical care to include: resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, as well as general care.
