The Symbolism of Blood in Two Masterpieces of the Early Italian Baroque Art
The Symbolism of blood in two masterpieces of the early Italian Baroque art Angelo Lo Conte Throughout history, blood has been associated with countless meanings, encompassing life and death, power and pride, love and hate, fear and sacrifice. In the early Baroque, thanks to the realistic mi of Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, blood was transformed into a new medium, whose powerful symbolism demolished the conformed traditions of Mannerism, leading art into a new expressive era. Bearer of macabre premonitions, blood is the exclamation mark in two of the most outstanding masterpieces of the early Italian Seicento: Caravaggio's Beheading a/the Baptist (1608)' (fig. 1) and Artemisia Gentileschi's Judith beheading Halo/ernes (1611-12)2 (fig. 2), in which two emblematic events of the Christian tradition are interpreted as a representation of personal memories and fears, generating a powerful spiral of emotions which constantly swirls between fiction and reality. Through this paper I propose that both Caravaggio and Aliemisia adopted blood as a symbolic representation of their own life-stories, understanding it as a vehicle to express intense emotions of fear and revenge. Seen under this perspective, the red fluid results as a powerful and dramatic weapon used to shock the viewer and, at the same time, express an intimate and anguished condition of pain. Rediscovered Painting by Orazio Gentileschi Leads Colnaghi's
REDISCOVERED PAINTING BY ORAZIO GENTILESCHI LEADS COLNAGHI’S SPRING EXHIBITION IN NEW YORK FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Colnaghi will show a rediscovered and previously unpublished painting by Orazio Gentileschi (1563-1639) at a spring exhibition in their newly-opened townhouse space in New York’s Upper East Side. Taking place from 27 January to 3 February 2018 as part of Master Drawings New York 2018, the exhibition will also include a selection of works by notable artists including Pedro de Mena (1628-1688) and Luca Giordano (1634-1705). In addition, and following the arrival of Carlos A. Picón as Director of the new gallery in New York, the exhibition will also showcase a fine group of antiquities. The Crowning of Thorns by Orazio Gentileschi (1563-1639) is an important rediscovery which has been in a private collection for at least several generations, hidden from the view of art historians and unpublished to date. Orazio Gentileschi was one of the most significant and innovative artists working in Italy during the beginning of the 17th century. Born in Pisa, he later moved to Rome where he met Caravaggio and was highly influenced by the artist, though over time he developed a softer, more refined version of Caravaggio’s dramatic style. He also worked in Genoa and Paris, before moving to London in 1626 where he was court painter to Charles II. This painting is oil on canvas and measures 52cm x 41cm (20 x 16 in.). It is linked to two other versions of the subject, of larger dimensions, both dated to 1610-15; it is likely the present version also dates to this period.

DATE: March 30, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Getty Museum Acquires Recently Rediscovered Painting by Artemisia Gentileschi Lucretia, About 1627, Artemisia Gentileschi (Italian, 1593- c.1654) Los Angeles – The J. Paul Getty Museum today announced the acquisition of a major work by Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-c.1654), the most celebrated woman painter of 17th-century Italy. Recently rediscovered after having been in private collections for centuries, the painting represents the artist at the height of her expressive powers, and demonstrates her ambition for depicting historical subjects, something that was virtually unprecedented for a female artist in her day. The subject, which Gentileschi painted several times over the course of her career, no doubt had very personal significance for her: like Lucretia, the Roman heroine who took her own life after having been raped, Artemisia had experienced sexual violence as a young woman. In this painting Lucretia emerges from the shadows, eyes cast heavenward, head tilted back, breasts bare, at the moment before she plunges a dagger into her chest. “Although renowned in her day as a painter of outstanding ability, Artemisia suffered from the long shadow cast by her more famous and celebrated father Orazio Gentileschi (of whom the Getty has two major works, Lot and His Daughters and the recently acquired Danaë and the Shower of Gold),” said Timothy Potts, Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Tuttle Director of the J. In fact, no painting of his is known prior to his arrival in the capital. But his education in Lombardy was fundamental to his forma - tion, as was understood and explained by the art historian 3. TASTE AND PRUDENCE IN THE ART OF JUSEPE DE RIBERA by Hannah Joy Friedman A dissertation submitted to the Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland May, 2016 Copyright Hannah Joy Friedman, 2016 (c) Abstract: Throughout his long career in southern Italy, the Spanish artist Jusepe de Ribera (1591- 1652) showed a vested interest in the shifting practices and expectations that went into looking at pictures. As I argue, the artist’s evident preoccupation with sensory experience is inseparable from his attention to the ways in which people evaluated and spoke about art. Ribera’s depictions of sensory experience, in works such as the circa 1615 Five Senses, the circa 1622 Studies of Features, and the 1637 Isaac Blessing Jacob, approach the subject of the bodily senses in terms of evaluation and questioning, emphasizing the link between sensory experience and prudence. Ribera worked at a time and place when practices of connoisseurship were not, as they are today, a narrow set of preoccupations with attribution and chronology but a wide range of qualitative evaluations, and early sources describe him as a tasteful participant in a spoken connoisseurial culture. In these texts, the usage of the term “taste,” gusto, links the assessment of Ribera’s work to his own capacity to judge the works of other artists. Both taste and prudence were crucial social skills within the courtly culture that composed the upper tier of Ribera’s audience, and his pictures respond to the tensions surrounding sincerity of expression or acceptance of sensory experience in a novel and often satirical vein.

^ For immediate release Exhibition: Bodies and shadows: Caravaggio and his legacy On view: November 11, 2012-February 10, 2013 location: resnick pavilion LACMA presents the U.S. premiere of BODIES AND SHADOWS: CARAVAGGIO AND HIS LEGACY An unprecedented eight Caravaggio paintings will be on view together for the first time in California (Image captions on page 6 ) (Los Angeles—October 26, 2012)—The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is pleased to present Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy, an exhibition devoted to the legacy of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571 – 1610), one of the most influential painters in European history. The exhibition was co-organized by LACMA, the Musée Fabre, Montpellier, the Musée des Augustins, Toulouse, and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, under the auspices of FRAME (French Regional American Museum Exchange), an international consortium to which all four museums belong. Caravaggio’s striking realism, violent contrasts of light and darkness, and ability to express powerful emotions were as surprising to his contemporaries as they are to us today. In this exhibition many of the innovations introduced by Caravaggio were adopted by painters from different countries, backgrounds, and influences. In this exhibition an unprecedented eight paintings by Caravaggio himself will be shown together for the first time in California.
