Email: [email protected] Abstract The odonatological results of two field trips to mainland Yemen carried out mainly in summer 2005 and winter 2007, and to Socotra in winter 1999 are put on record. At 30 localities, 33 dragonfly species were collected, respectively observed (3). One species, Azuragrion somalicum is new for mainland Yemen, and a second, Pseudagrion niloti- cum, is new for mainland Yemen and the Arabian Peninsula. Three species, Azuragrion somalicum, Orthetrum julia, and Sympetrum fonscolombii are new records for Socotra. Kurzfassung Die odonatologischen Ergebnisse zweier Feldaufenthalte auf dem jemenitischen Fest- land hauptsächlich im Sommer 2005 und Winter 2007 und auf Socotra im Winter 1999 werden mitgeteilt. An 30 Fundorten wurden 33 Libellenarten gesammelt oder beobachtet (3). Azuragrion somalicum ist neu für das jemenitische Festland, Pseud- agrion niloticum, ist neu für das jemenitische Festland und die Arabische Halbinsel. At the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia
NABU’s Biodiversity Assessment at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia Dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata) at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve Viola Clausnitzer 160 DRAGONFLIES Highlights ´ A total of 33 Odonata (=dragonflies and damselflies, hereafter referred to as “dragonflies”) species from seven families were recorded (31.1% of Ethiopia’s dragonfly fauna and 65% of dragonfly fauna ever recorded in the Kafa BR). ´ A total of 51 dragonfly species from nine families has ever been recorded in the Kafa BR. ´ Three species are new to Ethiopia (Aciagrion gracile, Tetrathemis polleni, Phyllomacromia spec.). ´ Twelve species were recorded the first time for the Kafa BR, including the endemic and endangered Notogomphus ruppeli. ´ Eight of the recorded species are endemic to the Ethiopian highlands (Pseudagrion guichardi, P. kaffinum, Notogomphus cottarellii, N. ruppeli, Atoconeura aethiopica, Orthetrum kristenseni, Palpopleura jucunda radiata, Trithemis ellenbeckii). ´ Five species are threatened according to the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (three ‘vulnerable’, two ‘endangered’), all of them endemic to Ethiopia. ´ Endemic species were only found in montane and submontane forest streams. ´ The lower areas (wetlands) exhibit higher diversity, but no endemic species. ´ The Ethiopian Highlander (Atoconeura aethiopica), the Ethiopian Sprite (Pseudagrion guichardi) and the Kaffa Sprite Pseudagrion( kaffinum) are flagship species. ´ In addition to these flagship species, the montane forest gomphids Cottarelli’s Longlegs (Notogomphus cottarellii) and Rüpell’s Longlegs (Notogomphus ruppeli) could be good indicators of the status of conservation of the forests. ´ These findings show the great significance of the natural habitats within the Kafa BR for maintaining Ethiopia’s diversity and high level of endemism and the importance of conserving the remaining natural and semi-natural sites. -

Dijkstra Gortestraat 11, NL-2311 MS Leiden, The Netherlands, [email protected] Abstract 65 species of Odonata are recorded from Mulanje and its slopes. Only eight species dominate on the high plateau. Among them are two relict species of conservation concern: The endemic Oreocnemis phoenix (monotypic genus) and the restricted-range species Chlorolestes elegans. The absence of mountain marsh specialists on the plateau is noteworthy. Mulanje’s valleys, of which Likabula and Ruo are best known, have a rich dragonfly fauna. The Eastern Arc relict Nepogomphoides stuhlmanni is common here. Introduction Mulanje, at about 3000 m the highest peak between Kilimanjaro and Drakens- berg, is an isolated massif in Southern Malawi. From a plain at about 700 m altitude it rises almost vertically to a plateau with an average altitude of 2000 m. The plateau (including peaks) has a surface of about 220 km², being approxi- mately 24 km across at its widest point. The plain surrounding the massif was originally dominated by miombo (Brachystegia woodland), but is now largely under cultivation. The valleys are characterised by lowland and submontane forest, the plateau by montane forest, grasslands, bracken fields, scrub and rocky slopes, interspersed with countless streams (Dowsett-Lemaire 1988; Eastwood 1979). Surveys have shown that the Mulanje Massif contains over 30 million metric tonnes of bauxite, with an estimated excavation life of 43 years. In 2001 the government of Malawi announced to take action to exploit these reserves. Bauxite is an erosion mineral, which has been deposited superficially on the plateau. -

Agriocnemis sania Nielsen, 1959 was recorded in the lower valley and delta of the Nile. This suggests that a doubtful old record of a damaged Agriocnemis exilis Selys, 1872 from Port Said referred to A. sania, and that A. exilis should be removed from the checklist of Egyptian, North African and Mediterranean Odonata. Agriocnemis sania is new to African Egypt and should be downgraded from «Regionally Extinct» to «Endangered»on the IUCN North African Red List. -
