  • Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez Duologue
Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez Duologue Painted in the broadest of strokes, the stories of Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez may seem similar: both started life in Havana, discovered their gifts and passions for music and headed to the States, where they melded the music of their homeland with a wide variety of influences, each in his own deeply personal way. Zoom in a little, though, and the two paths differ considerably. Rodriguez was born into a musical family, his father a popular singer and TV host. A child prodigy, he studied classical piano at the prestigious Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán and Instituto Superior de Arte while playing popular music in his father’s orchestra by night. While performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006 he was discovered by his future mentor and producer, the legendary Quincy Jones. Martinez, on the other hand, honed his craft on the streets of Havana, learning the deeply-rooted percussion and vocal style of Afro- Cuban folkloric and religious music. Nearly a decade Rodriguez’s senior, the master percussionist and vocalist arrived in the U.S. in 1998, was soon awarded First Place at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Afro-Latin Hand Drum Competition, and appeared in the documentary film, Calle 54. He then co-founded a Latin fusion group, Yerba Buena, with which he toured extensively and recorded several successful albums. Pedrito has performed or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Angelique Kidjo, Chucho Valdés, and James Taylor. He has been leader of his own quartet since 2005 with a GRAMMY® Award-nominated album released in 2013 on Motéma Music.

  • PEDRITO MARTINEZ Biography 2014
PEDRITO MARTINEZ Biography 2014 “Since arriving in the United States, Cuban percussionist [Pedrito] Martinez has been all over the place, putting rumba and guaguancó into the weave of all kinds of groups […] when his drums, singing and writing are the focus – as is the case in his new band – he’s an incomparable performer.” - The New York Times The Pedrito Martinez Group has its roots planted firmly in the Afro-Cuban Rumba tradition and in the bata rhythms and vocal chants of the music of Yoruba and Santeria. Ben Ratliff summed it up aptly for the New York Times calling it, “complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk.” Since its formation in the current lineup in 2008, the Pedrito Martinez group has developed into an extraordinarily tight and creative unit with a home base gig in Midtown Manhattan at Guantanamera. They have built a fan base that includes Steve Gadd, Ravi Coltrane, Taj Mahal, Eric Clapton, John Scofield, Roger Waters, Derek Trucks, Herlin Riley, and Will Lee. Pedrito Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba, Sept 12, 1973. He began his musical career at the age of 11, performing as vocalist and percussionist playing with such Cuban legends as Tata Güines, Muñequitos de Matanzas. In 1998 he was brought to Canada by Jane Bunnett, to tour with her group, Spirits of Havana. His decision to remain in North America to pursue his career, proved to be an auspicious one when, two years later, the annual Thelonious Monk Institute Competition showcased Afro-Latin Hand Drumming for the first time ever; he entered and won first place.

“Tirso Duarte es un músico con un gran ángel que mueve multitudes. Como bien claro lo dice: ‘La hace, la toca y la canta.’ Éxitos a granel.” Calixto Oviedo drummer of Adalberto Álvarez and NG La Banda My introduction to Tirso Duarte was in 2000 when I went to see Charanga Habanera for the first time at Club Roccapulco in San Francisco. David Calzado commanded the young pianist to step to the front and sing "El Charanguero Mayor". His performance, stage presence, improvisations and ability to command the crowd totally blew my wig back!!! I became an instant fan. Tirso is a super talent and a triple threat: singer, pianist and composer, el verdadero "animal de animales"! If I had to pick a team of timba gladiators, Tirso Duarte would be my #1 pick to do battle and thrash against anyone…..ANYONE!!! Walter “DJ WaltDigz” Vela anejoprod.com – San Francisco Desde mi punto de vista Tirso Duarte es un músico completo, lo conozco desde que era pequeño, he compartido escenario con el en NG la Banda en gira por Europa y he vivido de cerca su maestría, su carisma y su gran fuerza interpretativa.
