PEDRITO MARTINEZ Biography 2014 PEDRITO MARTINEZ Biography 2014 “Since arriving in the United States, Cuban percussionist [Pedrito] Martinez has been all over the place, putting rumba and guaguancó into the weave of all kinds of groups […] when his drums, singing and writing are the focus – as is the case in his new band – he’s an incomparable performer.” - The New York Times The Pedrito Martinez Group has its roots planted firmly in the Afro-Cuban Rumba tradition and in the bata rhythms and vocal chants of the music of Yoruba and Santeria. Ben Ratliff summed it up aptly for the New York Times calling it, “complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk.” Since its formation in the current lineup in 2008, the Pedrito Martinez group has developed into an extraordinarily tight and creative unit with a home base gig in Midtown Manhattan at Guantanamera. They have built a fan base that includes Steve Gadd, Ravi Coltrane, Taj Mahal, Eric Clapton, John Scofield, Roger Waters, Derek Trucks, Herlin Riley, and Will Lee. Pedrito Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba, Sept 12, 1973. He began his musical career at the age of 11, performing as vocalist and percussionist playing with such Cuban legends as Tata Güines, Muñequitos de Matanzas. In 1998 he was brought to Canada by Jane Bunnett, to tour with her group, Spirits of Havana. His decision to remain in North America to pursue his career, proved to be an auspicious one when, two years later, the annual Thelonious Monk Institute Competition showcased Afro-Latin Hand Drumming for the first time ever; he entered and won first place. Martinez was a member of the highly successful, Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band, Yerba Buena with which he recorded two albums and toured the world opening for bands including the Dave Matthews Band, Willie Nelson and Ray Charles. In addition, he has also lent his talents to over one hundred records, and collaborated with artist such as Paquito D’Rivera, Issac Delgado, Eliane Elias, Stefon Harris, Steve Turre, Eddie Palmieri, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Conrad Herwig, Meshell Ndegeocello, Bill Summers and Los Hombres Calientes, Arturo Chico O’Farrill, Bebo Valdés, Cassandra Wilson, Joe Lovano, and Sting, (for his rainforest benefit, with Elton John and Bruce Springsteen). He was also featured in the documentary film on Cuban music, Calle 54 and his singing and percussion playing were featured in the 2011, Academy Award-nominated, Chico and Rita. The Pedrito Martinez Group has self-released two live albums. An album by Pedrito Martinez,*Rumba de la Isla*, featuring the music of the flamenco great, *Camarón de la Isla* was released on Calle54/Sony in March of 2013. Their first studio album, The Pedrito Martinez Group, was released, October 8, 2013, on Motema Music. The album was produced by Steve Gadd and Pedrito Martinez and features special guests, Wynton Marsalis, John Scofield, Steve Gadd, Marc Quinones and Gary Schreiner. The Pedrito Martinez Group has appeared at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Apollo Theater, The Newport Jazz Festival, globalFest, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, TED Conference andTEDx, The Montreal Jazz Festival, The Red Sea Festival, Montreux Jazz Fest, The Sydney Festival, Bonnaroo, Yoshi’s/San Francisco, The Umbria Jazz Festivals, Saratoga Jazz Festival, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival/San Francisco, Festival Internationale, Playboy Jazz Festival, SF Jazz, The Barbican, The Jazz Standard and Joe’s Pub NYC. EDAR PANTOJA-ALEMAN Pianist, trumpeter, arranger and composer Edgar Pantoja-Aleman has devoted his life to an intense passion for the piano. He was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, and at the age of 11, began studying classical music, motivated by his mother who discovered in him innate musical interests, especially, in Afro Cuban rhythms. The trumpet was his first instrument and the beginning of a long journey, taking up the piano early on. From 1994-2008, Edgar worked as a teacher, in Havana and in Spain, instructing piano, brass, harmony, and percussion. He has lived in New York City, since 2008, where he has performed with David Murray, Pedrito Martinez and many others. Edgar joined The Pedrito Martinez Group in November of 2014. ALVARO BENAVIDES A scholarship from Berklee College of Music brought bassist Álvaro Benavides to the United States from his native Venezuela. He's a brilliant soloist with unshakeable timing that allows him to shoulder the entire groove when the rest of the musicians drop out, or to power the band to a devastating bomba climax with wicked thumps, slaps and slides that congeal and combust with Pedrito’s cajón to produce as powerful and uplifting a rhythmic surge as the largest and most aggressive Cuban bands. JHAIR SALA Born in Perú and raised in New York, Jhair Sala spent his formative years studying intensively with Pedrito Martínez having met Pedrito when he was ten years old. He’s now in high demand as a session musician and bandleader in his own right, but there’s an uncanny magic when he plays with Pedrito. Jhair’s touch, timing, and feel, are truly remarkable and with literally thousands of hours of studying, performing and jamming together, the two drummers play as one. Pedrito is a genius…he is a revelation to me. Wynton Marsalis …when Mr. Martinez opened his mouth to sing — in the invocations for each part of the suite, and in the musical discussions that followed with chorus singers and the orchestra — no context was needed to understand the power of his voice slicing through a mass of sound, his phrasing intricately weaving through the rhythmic accents. The New York Times For all the genre-busting innovation and complexity the quartet projects, there is something distinctly soulful and centered about the music, and that no doubt emanates from Martinez. His arms form blurs as he pounds out rhythms. He changes up rhythms and tempos with barely a nod, so slick is his performance style. Jazziz Since arriving in the United States at the end of the 1990s, the Cuban percussionist [Pedrito] Martinez has been all over the place, putting rumba and guaguancó into the weave of all kinds of groups…. when his drums, singing and writing are the focus – as is the case in his new band, which plays complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk – he’s an incomparable performer. The New York Times Pedrito and the band are virtuosi of the first order. But even more striking is how they work together as a unit. They are one of the greatest groups playing today. I’ve learned so much from hearing and from playing with them. John Scofield Source: http://www.imnworld.com/artists/detail/226/Pedrito-Martinez .

  • Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez Duologue
Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez Duologue Painted in the broadest of strokes, the stories of Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez may seem similar: both started life in Havana, discovered their gifts and passions for music and headed to the States, where they melded the music of their homeland with a wide variety of influences, each in his own deeply personal way. Zoom in a little, though, and the two paths differ considerably. Rodriguez was born into a musical family, his father a popular singer and TV host. A child prodigy, he studied classical piano at the prestigious Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán and Instituto Superior de Arte while playing popular music in his father’s orchestra by night. While performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006 he was discovered by his future mentor and producer, the legendary Quincy Jones. Martinez, on the other hand, honed his craft on the streets of Havana, learning the deeply-rooted percussion and vocal style of Afro- Cuban folkloric and religious music. Nearly a decade Rodriguez’s senior, the master percussionist and vocalist arrived in the U.S. in 1998, was soon awarded First Place at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Afro-Latin Hand Drum Competition, and appeared in the documentary film, Calle 54. He then co-founded a Latin fusion group, Yerba Buena, with which he toured extensively and recorded several successful albums. Pedrito has performed or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Angelique Kidjo, Chucho Valdés, and James Taylor. He has been leader of his own quartet since 2005 with a GRAMMY® Award-nominated album released in 2013 on Motéma Music.

Fab Faux Meet the Beatles New York combo is the greatest Beatles cover band – without the wigs Not your average cover band Photo by: Josh Rothstein One day in early 1998, Jimmy Vivino, guitarist and arranger for the Max Weinberg 7, the house band on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, ran into his neighbor Will Lee, bassist for Paul Shaffer's CBS Orchestra on Late Show With David Letterman, in the elevator of their Manhattan apartment building. "We were going to our shows," Vivino says, "and Will goes, 'Hey, I'm starting a Beatles cover band.' The first thing I said was 'Why? There are plenty of Beatles tribute bands out there.'" "Then I realized he was serious," Vivino recalls. "He said, 'I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the way classical musicians start a chamber orchestra to play Mozart. I'm talking about playing the Beatles' songs and records live, as perfectly as we can.' I said, 'Without the wigs?'" Lee's reply was quick: "Sure." Seven years later, the Fab Faux -- Lee, Vivino, guitarist Frank Agnello, drummer Rich Pagano and multi-instrumentalist Jack Petruzzelli, all of whom sing lead and harmony vocals -- are the most accomplished band in the Beatles-cover business. Since debuting at New York's China Club in May 1998, the Fab Faux have mastered and played more than 160 of the 211 songs in the official canon -- according to Agnello, the Faux's resident Beatles statistician -- and most are complex hits and post-'65 LP tracks the Beatles never performed in concert.
