It scrutinizes the land use and land cover change (LULCC) and deforestation; forest ecosystem services and vulnerability of natural and human systems; forest management and land tenure; sustainable land management, development and livelihoods; and woodfuel energy in a Kenya and in Africa. It is a case study from Dakatcha Woodland, an un-protected global hotspot for biodiversity adjacent to the Kenyan coast. The local setting of Dakatcha Woodland; the relation of livelihoods, especially charcoal production, to the land cover change; and the environmental and socio-economic impact of land cover change in the study area, are studied in detail. The possibilities to promote sustainable development, livelihoods and ecosystem services in the area are reflected, too. The main objective of this study is to contribute to the planning of sustainable management of land and forests, and sustainable livelihoods of the local population in Dakatcha Woodland. Environment and its change affect biodiversity and ecosystems, and thus ecosystem services that all human beings rely upon. Weakened ecosystem services deteriorate the possibilities to have good living conditions and livelihoods. Dakatcha Woodland is experiencing both environmental and socio-economical problems due to uncontrolled clearance of hilltop Cynometra-Brachylaena forests for agriculture and for charcoal burning to meet the energy demands of both local population as well as to supply the nearby centres and towns. The main underlaying problems are poverty and lack of alternative income generating activities coupled with weak institutional framework and poor land tenure and management system. Drawing from a holistic research epistemology, the study resolves the study objectives with various methods. Remote sensing (RS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) provide means to assess the land cover and thus the change in the state of environment. Combined with socio-economic data collected with methods often used in Development Geography they offer ways to assess the poverty- environment linkages and offer data to land and forest resource management planning. This study contributes to the existing local land cover data by analyzing four SPOT satellite images from 2005/06 and 2011, and by forming a supervised land cover classification for those years, thus scrutinizing also the change in land cover. In-situ observation, household questionnaires (90 households were assessed in October 2010) and semi-structured expert interviews (2 from October 2010 and 3 from April 2011), add to literature review in order to reveal the significance of charcoal production to local livelihoods and environment. It was found that more than half of the 90 assessed households are involved in charcoal production which is higher figure than peer studies have suggested, and that the charcoal network is a complex entity that offers income to many, but bears an negative impact on the environment. It was discovered that, like in Kenya, in Dakatcha Woodland, too, the demand for woodfuel (charcoal and fuelwood) is one of the key drivers of deforestation and land degradation. As such, woodfuel energy is a cross-cutting issue, that ties together forest resources, livelihoods and sustainable development, and demands thus further research. The woodland areas are fragmenting and the relevance of the Important Bird Area (IBA) demarcation should be questioned because it was found that the IBA has lost woodland areas to agriculture and to woody vegetation land cover classes from 2005 to 2011. The land and forest management of Dakatcha Woodland must be planned in accordance with all stakeholders in a sustainable manner, drawing from agroforestry and participatory forest management systems, and keeping environmental factors in mind for the relevance of ecosystem services that the environment offers. Sustainable future for Dakatcha Woodland is possible, but changes are needed today. Tutkimuksessa pohditaan myös kestävän kehityksen, elinkeinojen ja ekosysteemipalvelujen kehittämisen mahdollisuuksia. Tutkimuksen päätavoite on myötävaikuttaa maan- ja metsänhoidon suunnitteluun ja paikallisväestön elinkeinojen kestävyyteen Dakatcha Woodlandin alueella. Ympäristö ja sen muutos vaikuttavat luonnon monimuotoisuuteen ja ekosysteemeihin, ja siten ekosysteemipalveluihin, joista kaikki ihmiset ovat riippuvaisia. Heikentyneet ekosysteemipalvelut huonontavat väestön mahdollisuuksia hyviin elinolosuhteisiin ja elinkeinoihin. Dakatcha Woodlandin alueella on havaittu sekä ympäristöön että sosioekonomiseen tilaan liittyviä ongelmia johtuen kukkuloiden Cynometra-Brachylaena – metsien hallitsemattomista hakkuista, joita on tehty maanviljelyn ja puuhiilen tuotannon vuoksi. Puuhiiltä tuotetaan sekä paikallisväestön että lähialueiden kylien ja kaupunkien energiantarpeen tyydyttämiseksi. Köyhyys ja puuttelliset toimeentulolähteet yhdistettynä heikkoon institutionaaliseen viitekehykseen ja vaillinaisiin maanomistus ja – hallintajärjestelmiin ovat perustavanlaatuiset syyt tilanteeseen. Nojaten holistiseen tutkimusotteeseen tutkimus ratkoo tutkimusongelmia monin menetelmin. Kaukokartoitus (RS) ja paikkatietojärjestelmät (GIS) tarjoavat keinoja maanpeitteen ja ympäristöntilan muutoksen tutkintaan. Yhdistettynä kehitysmaantieteen käyttämiin sosioekonomisen aineiston keruu- ja analysointimenetelmiin, ne tarjoavat sekä keinoja arvioida köyhyys-ympäristö – yhteyksiä että aineistoa maa- ja metsävarojen hoidon ja hallinnan suunnitteluun. Neljän, vuosilta 2005/06 ja 2011 olevien SPOT satelliittikuvien analysoinnin ja ohjatun maanpeitteen luokittelun kautta tämä tutkimus tuo lisätietoa jo tehtyyn maanpeitteen tutkimukseen tarkastellen maanpeitteen viimehetkistä muutosta alueella. Paikalla tehdyn havainnoinnin, kotitalouskyselyjen (90 kotitaloutta haastateltiin lokakuussa 2010) ja puoli-struktu- roitujen asiantuntijahaastattelujen (kaksi lokakuulta 2010 ja kolme huhtikuulta 2011) sekä kirjallisuus- katsauksen keinoin tutkin puuhiilentuotannon merkittävyyttä paikalliselinkeinojen ja ympäristön kannalta. Tutkimuksessa kävi ilmi, että yli puolet 90 haastatellusta kotitaloudesta osallistuu puuhiilen tuotantoon, mikä on korkeampi luku kuin rinnakkaistutkimuksissa. Puuhiilen tuotanto ja kulutus muodostavat laajan verkoston, joka tarjoaa elinkeinoja monelle, mutta jonka ympäristövaikutukset ovat usein negatiivisia. Tutkimuksessa selvisi, että puupolttoaineiden (puuhiilen ja polttopuiden) kysyntä on Dakatcha Woodlandin alueella, kuten muuallakin Keniassa, yksi merkittävimmistä metsäkadon ja maan laadun heikentymisen aiheuttajista. HEARN Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721, USA ([email protected]) ABSTRACT To understand evolutionary patterns and processes that account for anatomical diversity in relation to ecology and life form diversity, anatomy of storage roots and stems of the genus Adenia (Passifloraceae) were analyzed using an explicit phylogenetic context. Over 65,000 measurements are reported for 47 quantitative and qualitative traits from 58 species in the genus. Vestiges of lianous ancestry were apparent throughout the group, as treelets and lianous taxa alike share relatively short, often wide, vessel elements with simple, transverse perforation plates, and alternate lateral wall pitting; fibriform vessel elements, tracheids associated with vessels, and libriform fibers as additional tracheary elements; and well-developed axial parenchyma. Multiple cambial variants were observed, including anomalous parenchyma proliferation, anomalous vascular strands, successive cambia, and a novel type of intraxylary phloem.

    1 Birthing Radical Selves The Making of a Scholar-Activist This chapter chronicles Wangari Muta Maathai’s experiential his- tory with the topics engaged in the rest of the book—environmental management and justice, critical feminisms, democratic spaces, and globalization and global governance systems. It is my hope that the reader will gain a degree of appreciation for the events and journeys that molded Maathai and shaped her politics and critical thinking. Through the seasons of her life, I recount the advent of her activist and scholarly identities, selves, and roles. I draw her narrative primar- ily from her memoir, interviews, and media reports and meld it with Kenyan and global histories of the different seasons of her scholarship and activism. Wangari Muta was born on April 1, 1940, in the village of Ihithe, Nyeri, in the central highlands of what was then British Kenya, to peasant farmers Muta Njugi and Wanjiru Muta, who were members of the Gikuyu ethnic group (Maathai 2007a, 3–4). She was the third of six children and the first daughter of her biological mother. Her earli- est memories on record are mostly connected to experiences with her mother, with whom she was very close. Growing up in a polygamous family, she remembered the four mothers living mostly in harmony and being supportive of each other, although she acknowledged the existence of some dissonance in the family and that her father beat his wives (19). Nevertheless, she reflected on her childhood with un- mistakable nostalgia. Her earliest memories place her family resid- ing and working on a farm in Nakuru belonging to a settler named Mr.

Adenia spp. (Passifloraceae) grows widely in many parts of Eastern and Southern Africa. Though some species of the plant are known to be generally toxic, a few of them are used in traditional medical practices. Among the many uses is the claim that when given to goats and cows which have difficulty in giving birth, it hastens the process of giving birth. We found this of interest and set out to investigate it further. We determined the effect of the water extract of Adenia globosa on the isolated preparation of the rat uterus and how this action interacts with ergometrine and prostaglandin F2α, two well-established uterine stimulants. The crude extract and the other drugs were tested on isolated rat uterus set up in an organ bath under the usual laboratory conditions. The results obtained showed that the plant extract caused a dose-dependent contraction of the rat uterus. The contractile effect was potentiated by small doses of ergometrine and prostaglandin F2α. It was therefore postulated that since prostaglandin F-2α also exists as an endogenous hormone which is released at the time of labour, the observed potentiation probably occurs in vivo when the plant preparation is given to domestic animals to ease and speed up the process of giving birth as claimed in the traditional use of this plant.

In March the figure was totally wrapped in black, red and white cloth (figures 1 and 2). By August 2011 the head covering had been removed, and the figure “looks unmistakably a Giriama lady. She can clearly be seen by the public, smiling with a hen with chicks around her” (Robertson 2011). In front of the structure a large sign announced the renovation of Uhuru Garden (figure 3) but neither in March nor in August were there any signs identifying the figure. It had been installed on 20 th October 2010, the first Mashujaa Day i under the revised Kenyan constitution. A newspaper story headed ‘Mekatilili takes place of honour’ includes a photograph of the figure (figure 4), and describes the event: “A ceremony to honour Giriama heroine Mekatilili wa Menza dominated proceedings in Malindi yesterday. A statue was unveiled at the former Uhuru Garden of the woman who led the Giriama uprising against the British in 1913 and 1914. The garden was named Mekatilili wa Menza Garden in her honour. The celebrations continued overnight at the Madica Centre (Malindi District Cultural Association). In the morning, members of Madica and guests from Galana, Weruni and Godoma gathered at the Malindi Museum for a procession on Beach Road.

    Succulents in Miam i-D ade: Planting a D ry Rock Garden John McLaughlin1 Introduction The aim of this publication is twofold: to promote the use of succulent and semi-succulent plants in Miami-Dade landscapes, and the construction of a modified rock garden (dry rock garden) as a means of achieving this goal. Plants that have evolved tactics for surviving in areas of low rainfall are collectively known as xerophytes. Succulents are probably the best known of such plants, all of them having in common tissues adapted to storing/conserving water (swollen stems, thickened roots, or fleshy and waxy/hairy leaves). Many succulent plants have evolved metabolic pathways that serve to reduce water loss. Whereas most plants release carbon dioxide (CO2) at night (produced as an end product of respiration), many succulents chemically ‘fix’ CO2 in the form of malic acid. During daylight this fixed CO2 is used to form carbohydrates through photosynthesis. This reduces the need for external (free) CO2, enabling the plant to close specialized pores (stomata) that control gas exchange. With the stomata closed water loss due to transpiration is greatly reduced. Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), as this metabolic sequence is known, is not as productive as normal plant metabolism and is one reason many succulents are slow growing. Apart from cacti there are thirty to forty other plant families that contain succulents, with those of most horticultural interest being found in the Agavaceae, Asphodelaceae (= Aloacaeae), Apocynaceae (now including asclepids), Aizoaceae, Crassulaceae, Euphorbiaceae and scattered in other families such as the Passifloraceae, Pedaliaceae, Bromeliaceae and Liliaceae.
