Happy researching, Mildred PASSPORT ISSUED IN 1821 OWNED BY PRESSLEY DAVIS

With a single guess, what state, or what county within a state would you place the holder of U. S. Passport No. 77?

No need to guess for W. Pressley Davis of Route 4, Oxford, Abrams Plains, a retired engineer, has the answer.

The passport, which bears the signature of John Quincy Adams, who later became president of the United States was issued to John Granville Smith of Abrams Plains and bears the date of April 5, 1821.

In those days, no identifying picture was required but the face of the passport provided details of the appearance of the applicant. Smith was five feet, eight inches tall, had hazel eyes, dark hair and fair complexion.

The passport reads: “I, the Secretary of State of the United States of America, hereby request all whom it may concern to permit safely and freely John G. Smith, a citizen of the United States and in case of need give him all lawful aid and protection.

“Given under my hand and the impression of the seal of the Department of State at the City of Washington the fifth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and twenty one, in the year of Independence of these United States.”

Signed: John Quincy Adams.

The passport, on the opposite side, reads "Approved to embark for France from London Dec 11, 1821" and also a seal of each of the nations in which Smith traveled, returned to the U. S. in Feb. 1822.

Note: Also on same page was the following; John Granville Smith born March 5, 1772 at Abram’s Plains, Granville County, NC. Son of Col. Samuel Smith, 1729-1800 and wife Mary Webb Smith, 1740- 1827. Died Oct 2, 1828 at Abram’s Plains.

Richmonod, VA Mar 31, 1821. Dear Mother: I shall leave this place tomorrow morning for New York and intend to sail for Liverpool in the Ship Nester, Capt Macy, on the 10th April, etc. I am Dear Mother Your son. John G. Smith

W. Pressley Davis had the letter and passport at Abram’s Plains November 30, 1975.

This information was taken from the publication “Smiths of Abram’s Plains” located in the North Carolina Room at the R. H. Thornton Library in Oxford, NC.

Editor note: Imagine how many passports have been issued since Number 77 was issued. Mine has a number over 13 million 25 years ago. I would say close to 100 million today. That is a lot of work and travelling.

GCGS Deaths for September, October, November 2016

Editors Note: This listing shows the deaths from the obituaries of three newspapers (Oxford Public Ledger, Butner/Creedmoor News, Henderson Dispatch) for the specified time. Names are listed as they appear in the papers. Their listed age, whether they were Buried or Cremated (many people would be looking for a tombstone and gravesites with burials, but with cremations they need to look for a death certificate or an obit). The date of death and parents if listed. Some Funeral Homes do not list the parents.

Leroy Lafayette Crews and Ellen Hamill Crews

Leroy Lafayette Crews and his second wife Ellen Hamill Crews. Home built by James A. Crews, Jr. Located at Tar River, Granville County, NC. James A. Crews, born 1813 was called Tar River Jimmie. I have a handmade walking stick of his. It is made of lge grapevine and is finished beautifully.

The home is located on Highway 15, 8 miles west of Oxford. In the original picture one can see a hole in the post, were silver and grain was hidden during the civil war. The boys lived in the office that was built in the back. To the right, there is a building put together with wooden pegs and a fireplace in the center. The slaves lived there. Just a little further on from there, still in sight of the house, is the family burying ground. James Jr. and his wife, Martha Hunt are buried there. Also, Leroy and his 1st wife, Fannie, my grandmother, are buried there. Tobacco was grown on this farm. The barns were located to the left. I remember that they had such a good time curing the tobacco in these barns with slow fires that had to be watched all night. They would shoot marbles and eat and sing. I learned to shoot marbles there. They also played horseshoes. Leroy Crews’ funeral was held at Shady Grove Church. I am sending you a short history of that church.

James A. Crews Sr. and wife, Sarah Earl are buried at Salem Church, about three miles northeast of Oxford. They lived in that neighborhood. The church is still used today, in good condition, and exactly as it was then except for the heating system. The lock on the door is the same.

Mr. J.M. Cotten Dead January 6, 1928

Veteran of the War Between the States

Another veteran of the War Between the States falls to sleep. Mr. John M. Cotten, one of the good men of the county, caught this death cold on Dec. 17, when he drove to Oxford to claim his pension money in the hands of the clerk of the court.

Mr. Cotten was born in Edgecombe county eighty-one years ago the tenth of last November and died at his home near

Granville Connections 122 GCGS 1746, Inc. December 2016 Tally Ho last Tuesday morning, January 3. He served his country as a Confederate soldier and participated in the battle of Bentonville. His distinguishing characteristics were cheerfulness, love of friends and a strong spirituality. He was always ready to lay his possessions at the feet of his friends, or on the altar of Christianity.

Mr. Cotten was twice married; of his first marriage there are five children, and of his last marriage one son. He leaves one brother, Mr. R.R. Cotten, of Farmville, Pitt county, who is nearly 90 years of age, and one sister, Mrs. Weeks, of Burlington. He is also survived by his widow, nee Miss Fannie Thomas.

Mr. Cotten devoted his life to farming, and resided in Pitt and Beaufort counties until about five years ago when he disposed of his possessions in Beaufort county and moved to Granville to be near his youngest son, Mr. L.F. Cotten, who preceded him to this county in 1917, and settled near Tally Ho Church.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Paul Hartsell, were held at Tally Ho church Wednesday afternoon, and the interment was at the home place of Mr. L.F. Cotten.

Obituary for Mrs. Caroline Smith (10 May 1848 – 9 Feb 1931)

“So live that when thy summons comes To join the innumerable caravan Which moves to that mysterious realm Where each shall take his chamber In the silent halls of death; Thou go not, like the quarry slave, at night Scourged to his dungeon; But, sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, Approach thy grave, like one who wraps the drapery Of his couch about him And lies down to pleasant dreams.”

Thus did Mrs. Caroline Smith live and thus did she slip away from us to be forever with her God whom she loved and served for eighty-two years.

Truly, as her pastor said, a giant oak in God’s earthly forest has fallen – But it was so deeply rooted in love, its leaves lent shade to so many weary souls and that tree shed such fragrance to the discouraged and broken-hearted that the memory of it will linger with us long and that to bless. Discouragement and impossibility were two words that Grand Ma Smith scratched from her vocabulary – Her very expression was a smile and a challenge to be “Up and doing, with a heart for any fall.

“Still achieving, still pursuing. Learn to labor and to wait.” We shall remember her, not so much for her many words, as for the numberless little deeds of kindness that her life was literally crowded with. She seemed to realize that her time was drawing short, for each day before she took her bed, was crowded more and more with loving kindnesses and tender ministrations.

Rich and poor, high and low, white and black visited her during her last illness; looked fondly upon her sweet face, breathed a prayer for her recovery and begged that they might so something for her. It was merely reflex action, for had she not been the busiest soul in Oxford looking after the welfare of her friends and acquaintances.

She was almost a life long member of the Methodist Church and she supported her church too; and stood back of her minister in every good work. She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter, Mrs. J.E. Jackson of Sanford, Fla.; and two sons, E.L. and L.F. Smith of Oxford; several grand children and two great grand children.

The smile on Grand Ma’s face, cold in death, seemed to portray – “Sunset and evening star and one clear call for me. And may there be no mourning of the bar, When I put out to sea.

Granville Connections 125 GCGS 1746, Inc. December 2016 But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound or foam. When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bells and after that the dark, And may there be no sadness of farewells When I embark. For though from out our bourne of time and place. The flood may bear me far. I hope to see my Pilot face to face, When I have crossed the bar.”

In Memoriam

It is with deep sorry that the Granville Grays Chapter of the daughters of the Confederacy, records the death of Mrs. Caroline Crews Smith, an honorary member, who passed into Paradise on February ninth at the home of her son, E. L. Smith. She had been a member of the Chapter for years and loved “the Cause” for which it stood.

Her warm-hearted character and sweet modesty showed itself in her loyalty in every work undertaken by the Chapter. She knew the horrors of war and the greater hardships of reconstruction. Her patriotism never failed in war or peace and she ever kept sacred the memory of the dead, extending sympathy and help to the living.

Born of an old and prominent family, reared amid surroundings of affluence and ease, her girlhood environment suggested the setting which we associate with the antebellum life of the Old South. She lived to be eighty-two but old age never came neigh her, to the day of her last illness she was alive to her finger tips and crowned with many flowers, she passed into the beyond to hear her Master’s welcome plaudit, “Well Done.”

Piety and consecration to her church and her Master, best illustrated in human kindness and charity to her loved ones and neighbors, were her chief characteristics and her cheerful, unselfish, happy personality radiated sunshine, warming her many friends who loved her dearly.

And now that our Heavenly Father in His infinite wisdom and love has called to Himself in glory our beloved member, be it resolved:

First. That we as members of the Granville Grays Chapter, Daughters of the Confederacy, express our sorrow in the loss of so sweet and gentle a member and will ever cherish with grateful remembrance her unselfish inspiration and help.

Second. That the loving sympathy of the Chapter be extended to her bereaved family.

Third. That a copy of these Resolutions be sent her family, the Public Ledger and a copy be spread upon

Granville Connections 126 GCGS 1746, Inc. December 2016 the records of the Chapter.

Respectfully submitted, Jeannette E. Biggs, Elizabeth Floyd, Mrs. E. G. Moss
