When a road needed to be built, the Intendant would oversee it. Governor_ Person in charge of New France. Would report back to the government in France. Sovereign Council- A set of advisors for the King in New France. The council included: The Governor, Intendant, Bishop and the Appointed Councillors. Imperialism- A country extending its control over other countries, often using economic or military means. Cultural exchange- An agreement to go and live in a different culture for a set period of time in order to learn as much as possible about the hosting culture. Jesuit- Catholic missionaries to the New World. Canadiens- A Francophone decendant of the settlers of New France living anywhere in North America, including the west. Monopoly- When only one company or group is allowed to sell or trade in an area. Colony- A territory controlled by another country Empire- A network of colonies controlled by a single country Home country- The original country controlling the colony Silk or Spice Road- The route people would follow when trading goods with India and China. Protestant- A Christian church that is not Catholic Who were the following people and what did they do in New France? Jacques Cartier- French explorer that was sent to the New world to find a passage through North America to Asia. Ended up claiming area around the St. Lawrence for France. Francois 1- The King of France that sent JacQues Cartier on his expeditions. Donnacona- The leader of the Haudenosaunee nation. Was kidnapped by Cartier. Died in France Louis XIII- King of France that ordered a colony be built in the New world even though one had already failed. Pierre Du Monts- The person King Louis XIII put in charge of the original monopoly of trade for New France. Samuel de Champlain- French explorer was sent by King of France to promote the Fur Trade, find trading partners and find support for the settlement. Coureurs de Bois- French fur traders. Often lived with the first nations and married first nations women. Louis XIV- King of France that took control of colonies back and put the Sovereign Council into place to rule New France. Radisson and des Groseilliers- French fur traders that went further inland than any other European and eventually started the Hudson Bay Company. Etienne Brule- French fur trader, a friend of Samuel de Champlain that did a cultural exchange with the Wendat Savignon. Savignon- Wendat nation member that did a cultural exchange with the Etienne Brule. What were the four reasons for Imperialism?
