UNIT 3C: MINISTRIES AND MISSION 90: Evangelisation and Missions (Lecture originally delivered at a Church Conference in 2011 held at the Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, Derbyshire, UK - with additional references). First Principles: The Holy Spirit in Mission Attend to this contribution from Fr Emmanuel, concluding his talk on the Holy Spirit in the New Testament at the aforementioned Conference: It is the Holy Spirit that wants each of us to become joined to God—to follow the Father’s will to become one with Christ and to be empowered in that oneness with Christ through His gifts. As in the life of Christ Himself, that means we will each experience times of suffering and times of joy, times of challenge and times of achievement, times of promise and times of fulfilment, times of quiet peacefulness and times of noisy conflict. This is all part of living according to the Holy Spirit, of seeking the will of the Father in our lives, of accepting the suffering and joys of being one with Christ that our search for the will of the Father brings us. The Department of Evangelisation in the OCA (the Orthodox Church in America) also places union with God as the first and most personal priority in preparing any local church for growth.1 1http://www.oca.org/PDF/evangelization/2005-Evangelization-Hndbk.pdf OCA Mission Planter’s Resource Kit, p. 11. In considering “How did New Testament Evangelism Work?” Father Michael Keiser points out that “by the third century Christians constituted an estimated twenty-five per- cent of the Roman Empire.” He suggests that this success was based on five principles: “(1) personal experience of God; (2) trust in God; (3) a Spirit-led community; (4) a profound sense of forgiveness; and (5) a focus on essentials . -

Kyivan and Moscow Great Feasts in the Late 18th Century The creation and development of the synodal church in 18th-century Russia required the different religious cultures and traditions that still existed in the various regions of the Empire to be unified. Unifying the church calendars was considered an important step towards integrating the Synodal church. The use of identical Menologies was meant to ensure the respect of Orthodox accuracy and to become a firm basis for the formation of equal religious practices. This paper aims to examine and compare the lists of the greatest feasts of Kyivan and Moscow Menologies of the late 18th century. I will focus on the end of the 18th century for two main reasons: first, it was almost 80 years since the Synod had begun to exert pres- sure on the Kyivan elites to unify their editions of church books with the Muscovite edi- tions: it is interesting to analyze how far the Russian authorities succeeded in implementing their orders, thereby unifying the Ukrainian and Russian Churches. Second, by the end of the 18th century, the Cave Monastery, where the printing house operated, had already been placed under the control of the Kyivan Metropolitan. At the same time, being a stavropigial monastery, it was subordinate only to the Synod, and was thus an autonomous ‘player’ in ecclesiastical policy with respect to the Metropolia. -

V – Feasts of the Menaion September 1 – The Indiction IN THE MODERN AGE the world has come to accept one civil calendar which originated in Western Europe centuries ago. Many of us are aware that some groups still maintain an attachment to their historic calendars. The Chinese and Vietnamese, for example stage their own New Year’s celebrations according to their ancient calendars, usually in late winter. The Islamic New Year may begin anywhere from mid-October to mid-December. And the Jewish New Year, Rosh Ha-shanah, regularly begins in September. Starting in the last half of the fifth century (probably AD 462), the Byzantine Empire designated September 1 as the first day of the New Year. The Byzantine liturgical year was arranged according to that calendar and September 1 remains the first day of our liturgical year. The cycle of the Church’s Great Feasts begin in September with the Nativity of the Theotokos (September 8) and conclude in August with the feast of her Dormition (August 15). Although our contemporary civil calendar begins on January 1, many of our public institutions effectively begin their year in September also. Congress and the courts, the school year, the theater and concert seasons, fundraisers, and other civic events on hold through the summer start up again only after Labor Day. Perhaps the Jews and the Byzantines got it right after all. The Indiction The first day of the Church year is called the Indiction. Originally referring to the start of a tax assessment cycle in the Roman Empire, this word has come to mean the beginning of a cycle in a more general way and may be found in legal or formal documents to this day. -

STROGANOV MINYEIAS DECEMBER Side1 Row 1 December 1: Prophet Nahum, whose name means “God consoles,” was from the village of Elkosh. He lived during the 7th century BCE and was the seventh of Twelve Minor Prophets. Nahum prophesized God’s punishment of wicked people and foretold the restoration of Israel. He died at the age of forty-five and is invoked for people with mental disorders. December 2: Prophet Habakkuk was the eighth of the Twelve Minor Prophets. He foresaw the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple, the Babylonian Captivity and the later return of their captives to their native land. During the war with the Babylonians, he moved to Arabia where he met an angel of the Lord. His relics were found during the reign of Emperor Theodosius the Younger. December 2: Saint Filaret the Kind lived during the 8th century. He gave away most of his money and pos- sessions to the poor, claiming he had a treasure that he kept hidden from other family members. His wife, infuriated at his generosity, gained the attention of Emperor Constantine. Constantine, who was looking for a wife, came to their home for a feast and to meet Saint Filaret’s daughters and granddaughters. At the feast, Constantine selected one of Filaret’s granddaughters as his bride and rewarded Filaret with gold, silver and copper coins. Saint Filaret gave the coins to the poor. He never wore fine clothing, and would not accept any imperial rank for his actions. He lived to the age of ninety. December 3: Prophet Zephaniah was the ninth of the Twelve Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. -
