St. Herman House FOCUS Cleveland announced last month that on the Saturday of Lazarus, one of their residents, Kyle, was received into the Orthodox Church. He was introduced to Orthodoxy while living at St. Herman’s, and for the past year has been learning about the Orthodox Faith and attending services. Constantine “Kosta” Kriaris was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Aug. 7, 1924 to Paul and Maria Kriaris. The family also included his siblings Helen and Steve. Kosta graduated from East Tech High School and joined the U.S. Army right after graduation, on June 23, 1943. He trained in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, before being deployed to the European theater. His unit was among those fighting the Battle of the Bulge (see bottom inset.) He went missing on December 14, 1944 in France and was pronounced dead on December 16, 1944, at the age of 20. A fellow parishioner from Annunciation Church, Steve Stamatis, was also killed during that horrible battle. Pvt. Kriaris posthumously received the Purple Heart from the Adjunct General of the U.S. Army. (see left and below.) His name is among the fallen soldiers and sailors carved on the monument outside Cleveland’s Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, where he and his family were members. He is also lovingly remembered by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and –nephews: his late sister Helen and Gus Demales’ children: Angela (Mike) Pappas, her daughter Angela, and the late Pete Demales, his late brother Steve and Helen Kriaris’ children: Maria (Chuck) Stoll, Gus (Karen) Kriaris, their children Kurt, Steve, and Lauren, Lou Kriaris, Paul Kriaris and his children Arielle, Alex, and Aidan. We are grateful to them for sharing the images of his medal and dog tags. May his memory be eternal.

Ardennes Counter-offensive (aka The Battle of the Bulge) took place December 16, 1944 thru January 25, 1945, in the Ardennes forest, which spans parts of France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The Germans achieved a surprise attack on the morning of December 16. American forces, led by Generals Omar Bradley, George S. Patton, Jr., Courtney Hodges, and William Hood Simpson, bore the brunt of the 2019 Graveside attack. However, it also severely depleted German’s armored forces, personnel, and aircraft, ultimately leading to an Allied Memorials victory. The “Bulge” was a nickname given to the month-long battle by the newspapers, printing maps of the battle lines.
