Re: Human Relations Commission

Dear Mr. Gentile:

I write to express my interest in volunteering to serve on the new Haverford Human Relations Commission. Enclosed is a copy of my resume for the Township Commissioners' revrew. My wife and I have lived in Havertown since 1983. Our children were educated through the local public school system. As a result, I have a strong interest in continuing to see Haverford develop and strengthen as a community. Fostering respect for the rights offellow residents appears to be a centerpiece of the rationale establishing the Human Rights Commission. Accordingly, I would like to contribute to the success of the new Commission.

I have no political affiliation that would appear to be disqualifYing. After five years assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Manila, Philippines, I returned in early August. As a federal prosecutor for 38+ years (until recently), I have been restricted from participating in partisan political matters.

Please transmit this letter and enclosure to those persons who are working to build the Commission. I am available to answer any questions that you or the Commissioners may have.

Thank you very much for your consideration. ;r;;;·(2"-. '"' Robert E. Courtney III ~ ROBERT E. COURTNEY III 14 Llandillo Road Havertown, PA 19083 610-789-5169

Dear Mr. Gentile,

I would like to apply for membership on the new Human Relations Commission. I have lived in Haverford Township for over 40 years. My two sons tell me now that growing up in Havertown was 'awesome.' We have decided to age in place in the same house, as we have enjoyed watching the township develop in such good ways: the new recreation facility and the new YMCA, for example. The quality of life here keeps improving.

Before retirement in 2007, I taught English as a Second language at Community College of Philadelphia for 20 years. Over that time, I met so many immigrants and learned so much about their adjustment to the cultural life here. I have also followed immigration issues closely. The formation of a Human Relations Commission seems very pertinent to me in these times. I would love to be part of the effort.

Sincerely, .07

Oear Mr. Gentile, I am pleased to see that you are again accepting referrals from interested residents willing to serve on the Human Relations Commission. I had applied one year ago as well but the Commission's existence was being legally challenged.

I seek to bring my long experience in working as a counselor to this Commission. I have worked in industry for many years and have participated in many cases that have involved EEO questions and violations, and deliberations.

I am very pleased that Haverford Township government demonstrated the boldness to pass this law and to set up this Commission. I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Application for Human Relations Commission

Dear Mr. Gentile;

This letter is in response to your request for volunteers to serve on the Haverford Township Human Relations Commission. As a concerned township resident I would be honored to servf.' in this capacity to help strengthen our community.

Enclosed please find my resume. I currently serve as an executive administrative assistant at the Pennsylvania Turnpike. In my position I have benefited from numerous training programs developing the skills necessary to detect, prevent, and eradicate discrimination. One of the most important mandates of government is to maintain an even playing field for all whom live, work, and play under their jurisdiction. I would be honored to help our municipality achieve that goal.

My experience includes service on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) committee for my organization. This committee reviews the legal requirements for our organization with respect to the ADA and makes recommendations for accommodations to comply with the law. The primary purpose of ADA law was to eliminate discrimination based on handicap or disability, to remove the barriers that prevented these citizens from fully participating in our society. The connnittee also reviewed all reasonable accommodation ~eque>ts for our agency. This experience prepares me well tor service on the Human Relations Connn!ssion.

I am certain that the skills I have gained in my employment, education, and community service experience will prove to be an asset to the Haverford Township Human Relations Commission. Please contact me if you have questions or require any additional information. I look forward to hearing from you regarding this appointment.

Sincerely, ,

DEC - I Lawrence J. Gentile, Township Manager 2325 Darby Road Havertown, PA 19083

Dear Sir:

I write to submit my name in application for one of the seven seats on the Haverford Township Human Relations Commission. I am happy to provide a copy of my resume upon request.

I have been a resident of Havertown, PA., Haverford Township, since 1987. I offer my services to the Haverford Board of Commissionerssupport of their continued efforts toward non-discriminatory procedures and policies that promote equity within our township.

On June I, 2011, I retired from Bryn Mawr College after thirty-seven years of service. For nearly half of my professional career, I was the Associate Chief Information Officer of the College. When the College merged six departments in the late 1990's (the library system, Academic Computing, Administrative Computing, Special Collections, AV, and Telephone Services), I became the manager of a department of approximately seventy-three employees - second only to Dining Services. When I retired, Information Services (IS) was a staff of sixty-four employees. My primary responsibilities included playing a major role in policy and administrative decisions, primary responsibility forhiring and separation decisions, departmental budget responsibilities (a task shared with a budget committee of three), and coordinator of the IS Senior Administrative Staff. In 1996, I was appointed the EqWll Opportunity Officer (EOO) of the College by then President Nancy J. Vickers, and held that position simultaneously with my Associate CIO position for seven years. The EOO was part of a six member( now eight) Diversity Leadership Group reporting directly to the President ofthe College and charged with "[providing] strategic advice to the President on how to encourage a supportive climate for diversity ... ".

From its inception in !998, I was a founding member of the Social Justice Partnership Program, an innovative program run primarily by students with the support offaculty, staff and administrators to create safe spaces for discussioningissues related to diversity and to forge partnerships within and beyond the College to broaden perceptions and to build a greater capacity for inclusiveness.

During the course of my career at Bryn Mawr College, I served on several College wide committees and task forces, including search committees for the current President of the College and the Dean of the Undergraduate College. I have a long and successful history of working with diverse populations dealing with a myriad of issues related to discrimination and inclusiveness. Non-discrimination and issues of equity rank high on my personal and professional list of priorities. The skills gained as the College's EOO officer, Associate CIO, and other leadership positions, including but not limited to conflict resolution and adherence to grievance procedures, are highly transferable, and position me well to make a positive contribution to the Township's Human Relations Commission.

I wish you and the Commission the very best in your effort to seat the Township's frrst Human Relations Commission. If at any time during your deliberations, I can provide additional information about my credentials or my willingness to serve, you may contact me by phone or email at your convenience. I look forward to hearing from you concerning the progress of the HR.C. Yours, Florence D, Goff

Resume When pressed for a description, I think of myself as an erstwhile academic, fledgling entrepreneur, and weekend painter. I began my academic career as the curator of rare books at the Library Company of Philadelphia (Be!]jarnin Franklin's circulating library, founded in 1731), but later turned from archival-work to higher education-at Haverford College, where I taught inter-disciplinary courses in the arts (designed to improve students' expository writing, public speaking, and research methods), managed the library, and coached the N baseball team. During this period, I also tutored local high-school students in memory techniques, taught adult-education classes in art appreciation, and co-authored The Published Writings of William Penn. After pansing for doctoral study on visual memory at Columbia, I returned to archival-work at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, where I secured and administered funds for a state-wide program to locate, catalog, and rnicrofihu deteriomted Pennsylvania newspapers. From there, I levemged my doctoml research by accepting a Visiting Professorship at the University of North Carolina, where I tanght graduate seminars on "mental information-processing" for the School of Information Science. In 1988, I entered the business arena as a "human factors specialisf'-with Telebase Systems, world leader in providing public access to professional databases. During my tenure at Telebase, I designed menu-based online information products for such early online networks as CompuServe, InfoMaster (AT&T), and Nifty {the premier online service on the Pacific Rim). When the Internet became commercially available in 1992, I founded The Center for Current Research, an entirely Internet-based information company, which compiled online folders of research findings on key medical conditions for patients and their families. Still seduced by entrepreneurship, early in 1998, I founded Skylight Web Agency, a wholesale website development firm, specializing in websites for members of professional organizations. Following the "dotcom" melt-down in 2002, I returned to the mre book industry, as a researcher for Bauman Rare Books, an internationally renowned dealer based in Philadelphia, New York and Las Vegas. I am now recently retired and have begun to paint. Armed with my ancient Masters degree in Art History (Romanticism) and Doctorate in Information Science (visual memory), I intend to offer an art course for disabled persons, in which computers are employed to produce "digital tracings" from photographs-ready to be made into works of art. In addition, I am looking to serve the community in other ways, and hope that my experiences in Philadelphia cultural institutions might be useful in solving the problems faced by either the Historical Commission or the Library Board. 3645 Darby Road BrynMawr,Pa 19010 December 2, 2012

Lawrence Gentile, Township Manager 2325 Darby Road Havertown, PA

Dear Mr. Gentile,

I am interested in the position ofLibrary Board volunteer. I have been actively w using libraries for my own research and as an advisor to students for most of my working life. As a parent of four children and three grandchildren I have also been intimately involved in encouraging reading and using public libraries with children . I have been a high school public school teacher and college professor and have supervised research projects, and as a volunteer for the Literacy Council of Delaware county. I believe I understand the important uses libraries uniquely fulfill and their potential as community centers and valuable gathering places for organizations. My father was a librarian, my sister is a librarian, and in elementary school the local librarian told my mother I was the best reader the Elmwood Library ever had (Syracuse, NY.) I think my interest in reading and libraries as a special place began early and is still important to me. Currently I do research at the Library Company of Philadelphia, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the American Philosophical Society and the Morgan Library in New York City. I'm also very active in a library Reading group. I teach part-time at Villanova University in the English Department. As you may gather, libraries have played an important role in my life, and I would be more than happy to be involved to serve their future in the Haverford community I live in. I see the Haverford community developing in important new ways that serve the needs of its citizens, and I would be proud to be part of that movement. Very truly yours,

Mr. Larry Gentile, Township Manager Township of Haverford 2325 Darby Road Havertown, Pa 19083

Dear Mr. Gentile,

My term as a member of the Haverford Township Planning Commission expires at the end of this calendar year. It has been my pleasure and honor to work with the members of the Commission over the past four years as well as with Lori Hanlon-Widdop and Chuck Faulkner as we have endeavored to advise our elected Commissioners on various matters presented to us for our consideration.

I am humbled by my colleagues' knowledge and skills as used to help make sometimes difficult and measured recommendations the Board of Commissioners. This experience has given me an opportunity to give something back to a wonderful community, which has been the cornerstone of my family for what is now four generations. Thank you for your past trust. I hope you and the Board of Commissioners will provide me the opportunity to add an additional four years to my tenure.

For your information, I remind you that I serve on the Historical Commission as the Planning Commission's member stipulated to appointment on that advisory board. I was re-appointed to that position this past January. If, for some reason, I am not re-appointed to the Planning Commission, another member of the new Planning Commission will need to be named to the Historical Commission.

If you need additional information from me you can reach me at: Cell 610-256-0846 Home 610-642-4849 Email [email protected] ~:(~ Charles L. Reardon

Dear Mr. Gentile:

I am writing to express my interest in being re-appointed to the Haverford Township Zoning Hearing Board. The end of my first full term expires at the end of this year. I also previously served a partial unexpired term when now Commissioner Steve D'Emilio was appointed to the Board of Commissioners.

I have maintained a perfect attendance record in both my terms to the Zoning Hearing Board. The Zoning Hearing Board has been provided with several challenging cases in recent years, and I am appreciative of the Haverford Board of Commissioners for providing me with this very rewarding opportunity to serve Haverford Township.

Dear Mr. Gentile,

I am interested in serving on the Vacancy Property Review Committee for Haverford Township. Should you decide to go with another candidate for the opening on the Vacancy Property Review Committee, I would be interested in serving on the Environmental Advisory Committee. As a resident and father of a young child, I have a keen interest in the future of Haverford Township. I would appreciate the opportunity to serve my fellow residents and participate in the stewardship of Township resources. I feel that my experience as a financial analyst and underwriter would be useful to either Committee. I've attached my resume for your review. Please contact me with any questions or to arrange a meeting to discuss my candidacy. Thank you for your consideration.
