Junior Prom Tickets

Junior Prom tickets will be on sale the week of April 1-5 during all the lunches. The cost of the Junior Prom tickets will be $70.00 Please make sure you pay all obligations before purchasing your tickets (Please see Mrs. Smyth in the Main office for your obligations)

If you are bringing a date from another school, please make sure you pick up a form when purchasing tickets. Thank you.

The Junior Prom will take place on Friday, April 26, at Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill from 6:30 pm to 10:45 pm.

Safe Arrival APP - Having Problems? If you are experiencing problems with the Safe Arrival AP, please follow the steps below:

If you have been experiencing issues with the app, please follow the below steps.

The steps to perform this refresh are:

1. Open the SchoolMessenger app.

2. Go to the menu in the upper left corner.

3. Choose contacts.

4. Once in contacts, press the refresh button in the upper right hand corner.

5. This screen will still show an error, but when you open the menu from the upper left the second time, you will have access to Attendance. Messages will also be populated with all recent messages you were sent.

6. At this point, your app should be functioning normally again.

If you have not been using the SchoolMessenger\SafeArrival App for reporting absences but would like to, you can visit the information page on our website for directions on how to start.

Ed Foundation offering Free Speaker Series

The Haverford Township School District Education Foundation (HTSDEF) is offering a speaker series designed to equip and support parents and families with information and tools to work through some of today's challenging issues. Active Threats: A Primer for Parents

(For parents of students in kindergarten through 12th grade)

Today no one is ever ready for an active threat. Mass chaos impacts everyone involved. Presenter, Michael Flynn, will provide firsthand information for parents. This interactive workshop will equip parents to improve understanding to handle threatening situations.

Michael Flynn, is a part of the patrolman and detective units. He is a Certified Crime Prevention Specialist and is tasked with instructing citizens of the township, adults and school aged children, in methods and strategies to reduce victimization. He oversees the Community Policing Unit which works closely with the residential, commercial and industrial communities to develop strategies that promote proactive community problem solving and crime prevention.

Learn How to Better Cope with Stress: An Introduction to Mindfulness for Ourselves and Our Young Adult Children

(For parents and high school students)

At increasingly younger ages, teens are facing higher levels of stress both in school and in everyday life. Research has found that stressful events can impact health and well­being in adolescents and can contribute to the development of physical and mental health problems and learning challenges. Practicing mindfulness can help both parents and teens improve their ability to focus, manage stress, regulate emotions and develop a positive outlook.

Presenter, Michael Baime, MD, will review the science behind mindfulness, lead a brief mindfulness practice, engage participants in a listening exercise and arm parents with some tools to help their young adults to regulate their response to stress and other emotional challenges.

Michael Baime, MD, one of the country’s foremost experts on mindfulness, is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of . He is also the founder and director of the Penn Program for Mindfulness. He earned a B.A. from Haverford College and an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Activities

Art Club- Art Club meets Tuesdays after school in rooms 120 and 122. First Tuesday of the month, there will be an art lesson, all Tuesdays are an open studio with access to supplies, tools, and expert advice. Mrs. Marshall and Ms. Talkin, sponsors. All are welcome!

Fashion Club - Fashion Club meeting Tuesdays after school, room 120. Do you wear clothes? Interested in any aspect of Fashion from following trends, fashion photography, and accessories, to designing and

Fitness Center - Weight Room is now open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays after school until 4:00.

Guitar Club - Every Wednesday - Have a guitar, bass or other stringed instruments? Bring it by Room 226 for Guitar Club every Wednesday from 2:30-3:30!

Italian Club - Italian club meeting on Monday, March 25, in room 133, afterschool

Math Center - Do you need extra help with math, help with math homework or studying for a math test? If so, the Math Center is the place for you! The Math Center is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in room 337 after school from 2:30 until 3:30 pm.

Movie Club - Movie Club is meeting this Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30-3:30 in room 237. Come join us for movies

World Affairs Club - Any student participating in the Model Arab League in April needs to attend a mandatory meeting in Room 217 on Tuesday, March 26 to get a permission slip and discuss details of the conference and trip. See Mr. Caviglia if you have questions.

Writing Center - The Writing Center will be open on Wednesday’s in the library after school.

Counseling Department

HHS Local Scholarships and Awards 2019 Each year, over 20 scholarships and awards provided by local organizations, alumni groups, and community members are awarded to seniors. The application for these local HHS scholarships and awards will be available on the Haverford High School Counseling Department website from Wednesday, March 13th until Friday, March 29th. At 3:00 PM on March 29th, the application will close.

These awards will be presented on May 29th, 2019, at the Senior Awards Night held at Haverford High School.

Scholarships

For any senior pursuing a career in the field of education, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees is offering three college scholarships to Delaware County seniors. The deadline is March 31st. Please look for these and many other scholarships in Naviance.

10/20 The Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) is offering two $5,000 scholarships (Lauretta Woodson Scholarships) and one $1,000 scholarship (Frank Monaghan Scholarship) to Delaware County public high school seniors planning a career in the field of education- teaching, administration, school counseling, school nurse, librarian, etc. The applications are available in Naviance, or at delcopasr.org. The application deadline is March 31th. Seniors are reminded to visit Naviance for a list of available scholarships.

HTEA Education Scholarship

Dear Applicant,

The Haverford Teachers Education Association (HTEA) is proud to offer two (2) two thousand dollar ($2000) scholarships to two QUALIFIED Haverford High School graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in Education.

The HTEA Scholarship Committee will review all application materials. The HTEA Executive Committee will then approve the recommended names for the scholarships.

If you wish to apply for one of these scholarships, please submit the following information to Ms. Laskaris in room 328 by Friday, April 26th, 2019—no exceptions!

1. “HTEA Scholarship­delivered Please submit a signed “Transcript Request” form to Mrs. Novino in the Counseling Office. Label the request, transcript. A copy of your to student.” 2. Questionnaire located within this packet 3. 3 letters of recommendation (teacher /counselor /community member) in a sealed envelope labeled with your name and “HTEA Scholarship.” 4. A word­processed essay limited to 250 words or less. The topic: “Why do you wish to enter the field of education?” 5. Acceptance Letter from the College to which you are attending specifying the specific program in which you have been accepted (It must be some type of education major)

Essay Question

Instructions to students: Please type a 300­500 word essay describing your goals in the following areas:

1) Future education; 2) Personal Life; 3) Community/society service; 4) Career goals

A total of 16 points is devoted to this section. The essay will be evaluated using the Keystone Rubric­ focus, organization, content and clarity/control of the essay.

An outstanding response would have the following characteristics in all four goal areas:

Reveal a capacity for introspection, reflection and vision Acknowledge a need for continuous learning and growth Are realistic and relevant in terms for the student’s stated interests, talents and skills Represents a clear and consistent set of values Are well written in terms of organization, grammar, spelling and word usage Clearly stated goals, which reflect an achievement orientation as opposed to a wish list.

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation­ one from each of the following categories must be included. Letters of recommendation can earn up to 5 total points.

Overall Quality of Application (Maximum 5 points)

On a scale of 1­5 rate the overall quality of this applicant’s package, with 5 being the highest quality. This section is an opportunity to evaluate the degree to which a nominee has followed the application criteria.

Last weekend some of our best swimmers attended Bucknell University for State Competition Swimming. The Swim medley team of Zach Givens, David Abrahams, Jackson Graham, and Jon Meyer came in 8th in the entire state. David Abrahams came in 2nd only losing to someone that broke Haverford Alumni and Olympian, 's record. Very impressive for HHS at State Swimming.Congratulations to these awesome swimmers! You make us H-Proud!

The AP Art class is selling original artwork sticker designs made by students as a fundraiser for the AP Art show on May 4th.

We sold out today and are now taking orders if anyone is interested! Buy some for your homeroom students, your kids, birthdays, class prizes, or to decorate your own water bottle or notebook. 2 for $1, or 50 cents each. We have a teacher discount of $4 for a set of 12.
