IMMUNIZATION CHANGES FOR THE 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR

The Department of Health has amended regulations regarding immunizations required in the school setting. The changes are specifically important for all students entering Kindergarten, 7th and 12th grades as well as new students to the district.

In addition to requirements for Kindergarten, students entering 7th grade require a dose of Meningococcal vaccine and Tdap. New for 2017, students entering 12th grade will require a second dose of meningococcal vaccine or one dose if given at age 16 or older.

A child must have all medically appropriate vaccines or a documented plan from a physician’s office for completion. New regulations require this for the first day of school in September 2017. Previously the grace period was 8 months. Due to this extremely shortened time line, we are asking your help in getting the required paperwork to the school nurse’s office. Most students who go for their yearly physical exam will have completed these requirements.

Students will not be permitted to start school in September without proper documentation.

Contact has been made for students without proper documentation on file. If you received a notice, please check with your physician’s office regarding these requirements and submit the most recent copy of immunizations to the school nurse or a plan for completion.

The requirements allow for the following exemptions: medical reasons, religious belief, philosophical/strong moral or ethical conviction. Even if your child is exempt from immunization, he or she may be excluded from school during an outbreak of vaccine preventable disease.

Pennsylvania school immunization requirements can be found in 28 Pa.CODE CH.23 (School Immunization). Contact your health Care Provider, School Nurse, call 1-877-PA-HEALTH or visit www.health.pa.gov for more information.

Thank you for your help! Our goal is to have 100% complete, avoiding any interruption in your child’s education! Please feel free to contact your school nurse with any questions.

PMEA BAND ALL-STARS!

On a warm, sunny Wednesday in March, two of our very own Tinicum students took their instruments on the road! On Wednesday March 29th, Victoria Burket (5th grade, flute) and Connor Robovitsky (6th grade, alto saxophone) both represented Tinicum School for the first time in over 20 years at the PMEA 5th and 6th grade Band Fest hosted at Garnet Valley High School. Victoria and Connor were chosen among the band students at Tinicum School due to their outstanding efforts and passion for music. Both students attended private lessons after school and practiced countless hours in preparation for this culminating day of music. The 5th and 6th grade Band Fest was conducted by Dr. Andrew Yozviak, Director of Bands at West Chester University, and Victoria and Connor joined 103 students and Band Directors from neighboring school districts to share their passion and create music together that day. After a full day of rehearsals, snacks, and meeting new friends, these fabulous musicians suited up in their concert attire and performed an incredible concert for a very crowded auditorium of parents, teachers, friends, and family. It was a fantastic day of music making, learning, and growing for our young musicians. Congratulations to Victoria and Connor on their participation!

Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) is an affiliate of the nearly 80,000 member National Association for Music Education (NAfME). This year, every 9th grade student participated in the PYP program in their English class. Each student had the opportunity to work with a teaching artist to develop a monologue. The program emphasizes the writing process and the importance of drafting and revisions. Most importantly, the program helps students discover their voice and learn that their voice has value. The experience culminated in a public performance of the student monologues in the High School auditorium. Teaching artists – current professionals working in the theatre industry in Philadelphia – performed the students’ monologues as celebration and validation of their hard work to compose a personal and

INTERBORO SCHOOL DISTRICT NAMED KEYSTONES TO OPPORTUNITY INCENTIVE AWARD WINNER

At the PA Literacy Conference on June 27, 2017, the Pennsylvania Department of Education presented Interboro School District with an Innovation Incentive Award. Interboro was the first place winner for its strategic and creative plans to “Increase Literacy Outcomes at the High School Level.” The KTO Innovation Incentive Awards program is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating innovation in literacy among Pennsylvania’s Striving Readers: KtO sub-grantees.

“I congratulate today’s Innovation Incentive Award winners – schools that have demonstrated a commitment to increasing literacy among students of all ages,” said Secretary of Education Pedro A. Rivera. “It’s been proven that there is a direct correlation between literacy and achievement, and I applaud the schools and educators who are dedicated to improving outcomes for all students.”

Eleven awards were presented to school entities in five different categories. Awards were given to districts that demonstrated the greatest growth towards increasing literacy outcomes in each of these areas through: increasing student progress, providing sustainable professional learning, engaging stakeholders, enhancing leadership, utilizing technology, enabling data-based decision-making, and creating 21st century learning environments. Mark Avitabile accepted the $25,000 award on behalf of the district and presented Interboro’s innovative work during the opening session at the conference. Additionally, Mark was joined by Assistant Principal Meisja Cubito, 9th Grade English teacher Andrew Herrman, and Assistant Principal Ryan Snyder to facilitate two works sessions focused on the topic, “Finding a Voice: School Practices that Positively Impact the Transition to High School.” The work sessions focused on the creation of the Ninth Grade Academy and highlighted new pathways that create college and career readiness for all students, common planning time for teachers, and the implementation of a standards-based curriculum.

What’s New in the Technology Department? Director, Barbara Hagerty

Staff and students at all grade levels are utilizing technology. We are working to integrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) at all grade levels as well. K-8 students will get to experience modular robotics with Cubelets while high school students are coding, building laptops, and building robots in our computer science courses. We are also exploring the expansion into STREAM (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Arts and Math) to better equip our students for future jobs. In some cases, the jobs they will acquire do not even exist today. This is why it is important for us to offer more opportunities including collaboration, problem solving, and technology. The district is working to build a framework to ensure that STREAM activities are incorporated at all grade levels beginning in the 2017-2018 school year.

Our students in the Community Schools participated in the Hour of Code this year. Coding increases “diversity in computer science by reaching students of all backgrounds where they are — at their skill-level, in their schools, and in ways that inspire them to keep learning” (Code.org).

Many classes experienced virtual reality and virtual field trips through Google Expeditions. The most recent trip was for Kindergarten Academy students to visit habitats from around the world on Earth Day.

In addition, high school students visited Europe!

Our Instructional Technology Coaches assisted staff and students in K-8 by facilitating and co-teaching lessons in coding, virtual reality and digital citizenship. Look for even more opportunities for our students to be makers by integrating STREAM concepts next school year!

Interboro is proud to announce that we are offering a student technology intern program for 11th and 12th grade students. This will be a fantastic learning experience for our students where they will receive training from our technology staff and will provide tech support in our buildings. This is a great leadership and resume-building opportunity. Visit your guidance counselor for more information on how to apply for future opportunities and be a part of this program.
