Physicality of the Analogue by Duncan Robinson BFA(Hons)
Physicality of the Analogue by Duncan Robinson BFA(Hons) Submitted in the fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts. 2 Signed statement of originality This Thesis contains no material which has been accepted for a degree or diploma by the University or any other institution. Duncan Robinson 3 Signed statement of authority of access to copying This Thesis may be made available for loan and limited copying in accordance with the Copyright Act 1968. Duncan Robinson 4 Abstract: Inside the video player, spools spin, sensors read and heads rotate, generating an analogue signal from the videotape running through the system to the monitor. Within this electro mechanical space there is opportunity for intervention. Its accessibility allows direct manipulation to take place, creating imagery on the tape as pre-recorded signal of black burst1 without sound rolls through its mechanisms. The actual physical contact, manipulation of the tape, the moving mechanisms and the resulting images are the essence of the variable electrical space within which the analogue video signal is generated. In a way similar to the methods of the Musique Concrete pioneers, or EISENSTEIN's refinement of montage, I have explored the physical possibilities of machine intervention. I am working with what could be considered the last traces of analogue - audiotape was superseded by the compact disc and the videotape shall eventually be replaced by 2 digital video • For me, analogue is the space inside the video player. -

Weaving Genres, and Roughing up Beats: New Album Review
Weaving Genres, And Roughing Up Beats: New Album Review Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world Is it just me, or was Record Store Day 2017 a tiny bit crap? The last time I was surrounded by that amount of middle-aged, balding men, reeking of sweat, I had walked into a strip-club by mistake. So, rather than relive the horrors of that day, I will dispense with the waffle and dive straight into the reviews. By JOHN BITTLES The electronic musings of Darren Jordan Cunningham’s Actress project have long been a favourite of those who enjoy a bit of cerebral resonance with their beats. While 2014’s Ghettoville disappointed, there was more than enough goodwill left over from the dusty grooves of his R.I.P. album and his excellent DJ Kicks mix to ensure that expectations for a new LP were suitably high Thankfully the futuristic funk and controlled passion of AZD doesn’t let us down! Out now on the always reliable Ninja Tune label the album is a dense listening experience which makes the ideal soundtrack for lonely dance floors and fevered heads. After the short intro of Nimbus, Untitled 7 gets us off to a stunning start with its deep, steady groove. From here Fantasynth’s shuffling beats and solitary melody line recall the twisted genius of Howie B and Dancing In The Smoke deconstructs the ghost of Chicago house and takes it to a gloriously darkened place. Meanwhile Faure In Chrome and There’s An Angel In The Shower’s disquieting ambiance are so good you could wallow in them for days. -

Tom Middleton
Artists – Tom Middleton According to Star Wars folklore, Jedi knights are benign individuals able to harness the fundamental energy of the universe, The Force, and make it do their bidding. Not just anyone can do this: only a select few are blessed with the necessary levels of cosmic talent. And even still, the road to Jedi knighthood is long and arduous, requiring years of training, practice and total focus. However those that stay the course are able to wield super-powers far beyond the capabilities of mere mortals. For 30-year-old earthling Tom Middleton - sonic evanchillist, disco catalyst, gastronaught par excellence, beardy bloke from Cornwall - The Force translates as The Funk. And, as Yoda might say, The Funk is strong with this one. Best known for his solo productions as Cosmos, as well as being one half of Global Communication and The Jedi Knights, alongside long-term cohort Mark Pritchard, Middleton's route to mastering The Funk has resulted in a decade-long stream of lightsabre-sharp productions and remixes which have, repeatedly, boldly gone where no-one in the dance music universe has gone before. Along the way, he has kickstarted the late-Nineties chillout explosion (Global Communication's 'ambient house' LP '76:14' inspired the promoters of The Big Chill to start the now-infamous festival in order to give downtempo music greater exposure); he helped shape the Nu School Breaks movement (the Jedi Knights' fusion of house, electro and breakbeats on their 'New School Science' LP is cited by scene leader Adam Freeland as a major -
Social Spatialisation EXPLORING LINKS WITHIN CONTEMPORARY SONIC ART by Ben Ramsay
Social spatialisation EXPLORING LINKS WITHIN CONTEMPORARY SONIC ART by Ben Ramsay This article aims to briefly explore some the compositional links that exist between Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) and acousmatic music. Whilst the central theme of this article will focus on compositional links it will suggest some ways in which we might use these links to enhance pedagogic practice and widen access to acousmatic music. In particular, the article is concerned with documenting artists within Intelligent Dance Music (IDM), and how their practices relate to acousmatic music composition. The article will include a hand full of examples of music which highlight this musical exchange and will offer some ways to use current academic thinking to explain how IDM and acousmatics are related, at least from a theoretical point of view. There is a growing body of compositional work and theoretical research that draws from both acousmatics and various forms of electronic dance music. Much of this work blurs the boundaries of electronic music composition, often with vastly different aesthetic and cultural outcomes. Elements of acousmatic composition can be found scattered throughout Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) and on the other side of the divide there are a number of composers who are entering the world of acousmatics from a dance music background. This dynamic exchange of ideas and compositional processes is resulting in an interesting blend of music which is able to sit quite comfortably inside an academic framework as well as inside a more commercial one. Whilst there are a number of genres of dance music that could be described in terms of the theories that would normally relate to acousmatic music composition practices, the focus of this article lies particularly with Intelligent Dance Music. -

Music for Boys, Girls, Queens and Kings: New Album Reviews
Music For Boys, Girls, Queens And Kings: New Album Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world After a short break where Titel Kulturmagazin went on an 18-30 holiday by mistake, we return this week with more album reviews than any sane person could ever need. After having to endure the tortured strangulations of EBM, and the hen party screeches of Ibiza for the last fortnight, fantastic albums by 2814, Wild Beasts, Bryan Ferry, Dinosaur Jr., Conduct, Gerd Janson, John Roberts, Riley Reinhold, Carl Craig are like manna to our ears. By JOHN BITTLES So, before we start trying to show off our sunburn, pass on an STD, or bore you with our holiday snaps, we had better begin… Last year’s Birth Of A New Day was an album which succeeded in immersing the listener within its own retro-futurist world. Overflowing with melancholy and wistfulness, it took the sounds associated with the burgeoning vaporwave scene, and created something visceral and real. This summer the duo of Telepath and HKE once again don their 2814 moniker to release the eagerly anticipated follow-up LP. Poignant, and dripping with a vivid sense of nostalgia, fans of Birth Of A New Day will be delighted to find that Rain Temple is every bit as good. Before The Rain opens proceedings with a feeling of hushed longing, somehow conjuring the image of standing lost within a cold metropolis where nobody knows your name. Further in, Guided By Love sounds like hearing long forgotten, but once beloved childhood songs coming from some far-off place, This Body can cause the unguarded to break down in tears, while Inside The Sphere brims with quiet resonance.
