14 Longtime 4-H Program Coordinator Diane Brazier Retiring When Diane Brazier’s parents moved to Emmet County from Detroit, she was just a young girl and didn’t know anyone. But, no one stays a stranger for long in Northern Michigan. She was soon invited by a girl on her bus to join a 4-H club. In that first year, Diane truly lives the 4-H motto 1973, she entered projects in knitting, to its fullest. “To make the best crafts and gardening. And, she fell in better!” She pledges her head to love with 4-H and all associated with it. clearer thinking everyday, her A few years later, her parents helped her get a steer and heart to greater loyalty always, she raised it, joining FFA when she entered high school. Brazier still loved 4-H though. She stayed in- volved in it and after high school she joined the new local and longtime friend Livestock Association, serving as its secretary. In 1984, she became an employee of Michigan State University Extension which oversees 4-H in the state. Her title has changed a few times over the years, but she’s continued in her position as 4-H Program Coordinator for 35 years. She focuses on recruiting volunteers and helping them set up clubs and assist others interested in participating in 4-H. Though she is set to retire this year, she sure doesn’t sound like someone who is ready to say goodbye to the fair. She is still as passionate for the 4-H program, the volunteers and kids in- volved in 4-H clubs, and for the people involved in the fair, as she was the day she started. Though it’s doubtful she will be able to stay away from the fair after she retires, be sure to tell her when you see her this summer just how much her efforts on behalf of 4-Hers in Emmet County have been appreciated these past 35 years. Thank you, Diane!
