Problem / challenge

The people in Namuwongo parish Makindye city division are affected by water related diseases annually which is caused by poor hygiene and sanitation practice and consumption of unsafe water. The root cause of the above problem is lack of knowledge on drinking water, hygiene and sanitation practice. The diseases affecting people are constant tropical Malaria, typhoid, stomach pain and Cholera.

Most of the collection points for wastes is near the public centres and home steads which is also the breeding centres for flies and mosquitoes.

Objectives - Encourage gender balance in community participation through managing and sustaining integrated water, hygiene and sanitation interventions after implementation. This will assist in sustainability of the project activities.

- To strengthen the capacity (capacity building) of water source committees and village health committees in order to support WES program in the area for sustainability in future.

- To strengthen the community of the area to develop and implement long term-of the Division after implemetation.

- To ensure there is improved sanitation in homesteads and road trenches.

- Ensure the poverty levels reduced within the project area through promotion of economic development.

Goal of the Project Promote community efforts to sustain safe water, proper hygiene and sanitation activities, create better health environment for communities and economic development in Namuwongo parish in Makindye city Division, Kampala city council, central Uganda.

Out puts Expected from the project: - Reduced Prevalance of water bone diseases by 50% - Improved economic development by 50% at house hold level - Sustained safe water and sanitation facilities in the parish by committees and water users - Functional Committees in the whole division and their wards 100% - All communities practicing proper hygiene and sanitation behaviours by 90% - All communities participating in solid waste management in Namuwongo parish. - Timely collection of wastes from collection centres

Project Message AAID will implement the project to assist the community control diseases like malaria which is a disaster country wide in Uganda, many other diseases related to unsafe water and poor sanitation. [Type text]

At the moment solid waste management is poor in the area though kampala city council is trying but the equipment of solid waste management is not enough for the population so there is need for intervention of other development agencies like AAID.

Sustainability / potential long term impact Since sustainability is one of the focused areas in the project which will put into consideration while implementing the project, this will be done through capacity building of the beneficiaries with their committees in place to care for water hygiene and sanitation activities in the area. AAID is going to build the community and committees capacity to improve water safety and sanitation services and improve their economic development in the area. Government extension workers will be involved in the implementation such that when the project implementation phases out, extension workers with AAID staff will follow up on the sustainability.

Through capacity building on sustainability AAID will focus on beneficiaries or water users to collect funds by using their committees formed by AAID. So these funds will be accumulated through microcredit schemes by providing loans to same beneficiaries. The committees will have policies set to govern the funds which target sustainability of the project.

PROJECT MONITORING AND EVALUATION The project will be monitored and evaluated to ensure it is successfully implementation, the project will be monitored by the management of AAID through progress reports, budgets and review of work plans with the project staff, extension staff from Government and the community resource persons put in place by the beneficiaries and the community in general will be visited every three weeks at their selected centers, this will be the responsibility of the programme coordinator, Executive Director with AAID consultants and accountant, to verify the work by social workers and facilitators at the grass root. AAID will seek technical assistance from Kampala district Local Government Water Department and health department where necessary during the implementation of the project. In addiction, technical assistance will be sought from Kampala city council. The project will have a midterm review meeting and end of project evaluation carried out by technical Monitoring and evaluation consultants. The overall evaluation for the implementation will be done after 1 year. The information produced from the evaluation and monitoring will be shared among stake holders of the project and other development agencies in the water and sanitation sector in Uganda and abroad, again the information will Assist AAID to understand its performance status so that there is improvement for future projects. `
