Dentro de las abejas, mezcla firme y seca de polen (Fernández & Nates 1985, Michener (2000) reconoce varias familias, siendo Apidae la Michener et al. 1994, Fernández 1995, Michener 2000). Exis- más grande en número de especies y la más ampliamente te dentro de algunas especies del género una tendencia distribuida. -

Gilarranz, Jordi Bascompte, and Miguel Verdú Content Supporting Materials and Methods Tables S1-S14 Figures S1-S5 S2 Supporting Materials and Methods Landscape’s human transformation The fertile Austral Pampas’ region, where the study sierras are located, was effectively colonized by criollos of Spanish descent between 1820 and 1830, and the land divided among the first “estancieros”, whose main activity was cattle-raising. The transformation from pasture to cropland on the plains surrounding the sierras occurred at the end of the 19th century associated with the onset of the big European immigration to Argentina (Barsky & Gelman 2001). As it happened across the Pampas, a relatively diverse agriculture dominated by wheat was replaced, starting in the late seventies, by one monopolized by soybean (Aizen et al. 2009). Today the sierras emerge as true islands of diversity amidst a relatively uniform agriculture matrix (Fig. 1). Threshold distance Functional connectivity depends on the dispersal capacity of individuals. Thus, it is difficult to determine a priori the threshold distance below which two given habitat patches are expected to be "connected" based solely on theoretical expectations, particularly for community attributes. An empirical approach frequently used in landscape ecological studies is to identify the threshold distance that maximizes the variance explained by the correlation between a given connectivity metric and a population/community attribute (e.g. Steffan-Dewenter et al. 2002). We followed this approach by estimating the relation between phylogenetic signals in interactions and estimates of patch betweenness centrality for each of the 12 focal sierras (Table S1), considering threshold distances between 10 and 20 km (Table S2). -

Gynan- dromorphic cases have been reported for 140 species of bees, an underestimated number com- paring to the twenty thousand bee species described nowadays. Here we describe and illustrate the first case of a gynandromorphic Xylocopa darwini Cockerell, 1926 and the fourth case of Xylocopa varipuncta Patton, 1879. The specimens show a mixed form of gynandromorphism with predominantly female features and with all its male traits concentrated in one side of the body, right side in X. darwini and left side in X. varipuncta. The gynanders of X. darwini and X. varipuncta were collected on Isabela Island (Galapagos – Ecuador) and Riverside (Cali- fornia – USA), and were deposited in Smithsonian Collection and California Academy of Sciences, respectively. Including this work, eighteen cases of gynandromorphism were reported to Xylocopa and twelve were recorded from Neoxylocopa subgenus. Abstract: Pollen loads used by Apis mellifera (Himenoptera: Apidae) in an area of subtropical forest in Northwestern Argentina. In Northwest Argentina, Yungas subtropical forests are very important because of their huge vegetal diversity. Honeybees (A. mellifera) use these resources to feed and therefore as an ecosystemic service through beekeeping. The characterization of pollen flora of a region allows getting to know the food source and defining the importance of different plant species for colonies development and maintenance. The aim of the present study is to identify the pollen flora used by A. mellifera in the Yungas Western area in Jujuy (Argentina) by means of their pollen loads characterization and to analyze the variations of two consecutive productive periods throughout spring and summer. To do this, 14 samples taken monthly were analyzed over the periods from September 2011 to March 2012 and September 2012 to March 2013. The samples were obtained from pollen traps at the entrances of the hives and were treated in the laboratory under conventional meliso- palinology techniques with subsequent acetolysis. -

Abrahamovich ∗División Entomología, Museo de La Plata, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Edificio Anexo Museo, Unidades de Investigación FCNyM, 122 y60, 1900FWA La Plata, Argentina, †CONICET, Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, La Plata, Argentina and ‡Laboratorio de Sistemática y Biología Evolutiva - Museo de La Plata, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Paseo del Bosque s/n, 1900FWA, La Plata, Argentina Abstract 1 A total of 33 nests of Xylocopa augusti was studied during two consecutive seasons. 2 Nesting behaviour and floral resources used by the large carpenter bee X. augusti Lepeletier de Saint Fargeau were studied during the brood production season in an urban area in Argentina. 3 Biological information about nesting aspects inside and outside the nest was consid- ered, paying particular attention to year-long activity, foraging flights throughout the day for nectar and pollen collection, nectar dehydration, oviposition, and pollen pref- erence. 4 In the study area, X. augusti shows an univoltine life cycle, with a peak of nesting between October and December, which coincides with the greatest blooming period of the surrounding flora. 5 From 36 analyzed larval provision samples, 18 pollen types were identified, most of them belonging to ornamental trees or shrubs. Pollen from Eucalyptus- Myrceugenia glaucescens (Cambess.) D. Legrand and Kausel (Myrtaceae), Solanum sp.-Cyphomandra betacea (Cav.) Sendtn. (Solanaceae) and Erythrina crista-galli L. (Fabaceae) was dominant. -

There is a consensus about the steady decrease in pollinator populations, which raises global ecological concern. Several drivers are implicated in this threat. Among them, honey bee pathogens are transmitted to other arthropods populations, including wild and managed pollinators. The western honey bee, Apis mellifera, is quasi-globally spread. This successful species acted as and, in some cases, became a maintenance host for pathogens. This systematic review collects and summarizes spillover cases having in common Apis mellifera as the mainteinance host and some of its pathogens. The reports are grouped by final host species and condition, year, and geographic area of detection and the co-occurrence in the same host. A total of eighty-one articles in the time frame 1960–2021 were included. The reported spillover cases cover a wide range of hymenopteran host species, generally living in close contact with or sharing the same environmental resources as the honey bees. They also involve non-hymenopteran arthropods, like spiders and roaches, which are either likely or unlikely to live in close proximity to honey bees. Specific studies should consider host-dependent pathogen modifications and effects on involved host species. -

Allendes2, & Mariano Lucia3 Abstract. The large carpenter bee Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) augusti Lepeletier de Saint Fargeau, 1841, is here recorded for the first time in Chile. This new record increases to four the number of carpenter bees known for the country. Host plant associations for X. augusti in Chile are pro- vided. A key to the species of Xylocopa Latreille in Chile as well as comments on the presence of X. (N.) bruesi Cockerell in the country are also presented. INTRODUCTION The genus Xylocopa Latreille (Xylocopinae: Xylocopini) comprises approximately 470 described species worldwide (Michener, 2007). These bees are commonly known as carpenter bees owing to their behavior of building nests in dead wood, hollow stems, and structural timbers of human constructions (Hurd & Moure, 1963; Gerling et al., 1989). About 110 species in 12 subgenera are known in the Neotropical region (Ospina, 2000; Michener, 2007). The diversity of this group in Chile is relatively low when compared to neighboring countries, with only three species recorded to date: Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) bruesi Cockerell, 1914; X. (Schonnherria) splendidula Lepeletier de Saint Fargeau, 1841; and X. (S.) viridigastra Lepeletier de Saint Fargeau, 1841 (Montalva et al., 2008; Montalva & Ruz, 2010). The record of X. bruesi in Chile requires confirmation. This species was first list- ed by Ruiz (1940) as X. brasilianorum bruesi and subsequently cited by other authors (Ospina, 2000; Moure, 2007; Montalva et al., 2008; Montalva & Ruz, 2010).
