Some see it as linguistic imperialism (Philpson, 1992), as an extension of colonial discourse (Pennycook, 1998, 2007), as colonial and imperial projects (Kumaravadivelu, 2003), or as the spread of English through commodification (Watts, 2011). In South Korea, gaining the name of English fever, English language education has been integral part of education fever for the last two decades. When the Kim Young Sam administration (1993-1998) ignited the globalization project, emphasizing the English communication skills as the silver bullet in global competition, it happened to engineer English fever in South Korea, which is often criticized as "collective neurosis" (Y. M. Kim, 2002), "fever ruining the nation" (D.R.Lee, 2010), and "social fraud" (Nam, 2012). English fever positions mothers, who are popularly considered in charge of children's education, to be responsible for children's English language education, while access to quality English language education is not equal to all, let alone the uncertainty of what it is. Hoping children would succeed and thrive, mothers experience pressure, struggles, and frustration in teaching children English. Drawing on mothers' stories, this multiple case study investigates mothers' challenges and struggles, which constitute their motherhood in the prevalent rhetoric of 'Wise Mother, Good Wife' in South Joseph Mondello Global Leadership and Organization Professor Dongjae Kim December 15, 2008 Overview For historical, social and cultural reasons, education holds a special position in Korean society. A rigorous education, marked by years of single-minded study tested in the crucible of a life-changing, all-encompassing examination has been a rite of passage for the high-bred Korean for centuries. Since the advent of the Republic of Korea education has retained its central role in society while gaining a new significance as a means of social mobility through universal education and a perceived meritocracy brought about by the focus on standardized testing. At the same time, questions related to education have been applied to the other pressing issues of this modern nation. Two modern strains of thought have been especially influential on the development of the modern South Korean education system. The first of these is South Korean society's the emphasis on codifying Koreanness, fairness and, in recent years, balanced regional development. The other is the focus on development, progress, and the development of South Korea as a leading nation with world-class institutions and human resources. No government agency better reflects the interplay of these two opposing drives than the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The Ministry has long been a battle ground over which the struggle between fostering the best and brightest and raising the standards of education for all has played out. In this highly politicized environment the MEST has wrestled with serving out its mission while at the same time facing uncertainty over what that mission is.

From preschoolers to college students, all are busy studying English. Parents also make a great effort to improve their children’s English, as early as possible. Ultimately, the problem of English education is that of “constructed reality” into which the success psychology of each Korean is condensed; therefore, it must be viewed from the historical, structural, institutional, hierarchical, and cultural perspectives of Korean society. This paper presents a critical review of the English language craze in Korea from multi-perspectives. It consists of three major sections. The first section briefly discusses English fever in Korea in relation to the early English education. The second section examines some of the major driving forces behind the expansion of English education or English as a cultural capital. The final section analyses the problem of early English education and plans for its solution. Keywords: English, early education, education fever, cultural capital, globalization 1.     UNDERSTANDING ADULT IMMIGRANTS’ LEARNING IN SOUTH KOREA: DETERRENTS TO PARTICIPATION AND ACCULTURATIVE EXPERIENCES by JIHYUN KIM (Under the Direction of Thomas Valentine) ABSTRACT This dissertation on adult education for immigrants in South Korea consists of two independent studies shedding light on immigrants’ formal and informal learning experiences. The first study, titled Adult Immigrants’ Deterrents to Participation in Korean as a Second Language Courses, aimed to understand immigrants’ deterrents for participation in Korean language programs by finding the underlying structure of the deterrents to participation and investigating the types of immigrants depending on their reasons for nonparticipation. A new instrument with 39 items that measures adult immigrants’ deterrents to participation in South Korea was developed; in total, 267 responses were collected, and 170 complete useable responses were analyzed. A series of statistical analyses revealed that a lack of time was the most compelling reason for nonparticipation. In addition, three latent dimensions of deterrents to participation were discovered: Negative Attitudes, Social Isolation, and Competing Demands. Finally, a cluster analysis identified five distinctive groups of survey participants according to their nonparticipation reasons: Active Young Workers, Income-oriented Temporary Workers, Isolated Long-term Resisters, Integrated Professional Immigrants, and Married Residents.     Grounded Narrative Inquiry into Language Teacher Cognition: Stories and Case Studies on English Language Teaching in South Korea Ian Moodie A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand April, 2015 ABSTRACT This thesis contributes to the field of language teacher cognition (LTC) research by investigating LTC and development in South Korea (Korea, hereafter), where English is taught by non-native English speaking teachers (NNEST) as a mandatory foreign language in the national curriculum. English education in Korea is often described as a fever: Curricular reforms in the 1990s raised the stakes for learning English and challenged the status quo of teacher-centered instruction, but reforms were met with resistance from teachers, and Korea’s shadow English education industry has become a multi-billion dollar sector and a socioeconomic malady. Understanding LTC is important for understanding what language teachers do; however, LTC has received little attention from researchers in Korea and this thesis addresses the need for in-depth qualitative research with prolonged engagement and persistent observations. The aim of this exploratory thesis is to problematize key issues related to LTC and English language teacher development in Korea. The scope covers initial commitments to English language teaching (ELT), stated cognitions, observed practices, and the influences of experience on the cognitions and practices of Korean public school English teachers. The theoretical framework is defined as grounded narrative inquiry, an approach that combines narrative research and grounded theory methods. Critical incident (CI) theory and case study methods also influenced the design. The thesis comprises two studies.
