Gymnosperms (comprising ginkgo, conifers, cycads, and gnetophytes) are one of the most threatened groups of living organisms, with 40% of the species Accepted: 28 March 2018 at high risk of extinction, about twice as many as the most recent estimates for all plants (i.e. 21.4%). Published: xx xx xxxx This high proportion of species facing extinction highlights the urgent action required to secure their future through an objective prioritization approach. The Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) method rapidly ranks species based on their evolutionary distinctiveness and the extinction risks they face. EDGE is applied to gymnosperms using a phylogenetic tree comprising DNA sequence data for 85% of gymnosperm species (923 out of 1090 species), to which the 167 missing species were added, and IUCN Red List assessments available for 92% of species. The efect of diferent extinction probability transformations and the handling of IUCN data defcient species on the resulting rankings is investigated. Although top entries in our ranking comprise species that were expected to score well (e.g. Wollemia nobilis, Ginkgo biloba), many were unexpected (e.g. -

4 Ecology and Distribution of the Malesian Podocarps Neal J. Enright and Tanguy Jaffré ABSTRACT. Podocarp species and genus richness is higher in the Malesian region than anywhere else on earth, with maximum genus richness in New Guinea and New Caledo- nia and maximum species richness in New Guinea and Borneo. Members of the Podo- carpaceae occur across the whole geographic and altitudinal range occupied by forests and shrublands in the region. There is a strong tendency for podocarp dominance of vegetation to be restricted either to high- altitude sites close to the limit of tree growth or to other sites that might restrict plant growth in terms of water relations and nutri- ent supply (e.g., skeletal soils on steep slopes and ridges, heath forests, ultramafic parent material). Although some species are widespread in lowland forests, they are generally present at very low density, raising questions concerning their regeneration ecology and competitive ability relative to co- occurring angiosperm tree species. A number of species in the region are narrowly distributed, being restricted to single islands or mountain tops, and are of conservation concern. Our current understanding of the distribution and ecology of Malesian podocarps is reviewed in this chapter, and areas for further research are identified. INTRODUCTION The Malesian region has the highest diversity of southern conifers (i.e., Podocarpaceae and Araucariaceae) in the world (Enright and Hill, 1995). It is a large and heterogeneous area, circumscribing tropical and subtropical lowland to montane forest (and some shrubland) assemblages, extending from Tonga in Neal J. JAFFRÉ ESPITE ITS small area (19 O00 km2) New Caledonia possesses a rich and distinctive flora, totalling 3000 species of phanerogams of which 75 to 80 per cent are endemic. Among these are 43 conifers (all endemic) belonging D (1 to four families: Taxaceae (one sp.), Podocarpaceae (18 spp.), Araucariaceae 8 spp.), Cupressaceae (six spp.). \ The sole species of the family Taxaceae belongs to the endemic genus Austrotaxus. The Podocarpaceae is divided among eight genera: Podocarpus (seven ii spp.), Dacrydium (four spp.), Retrophyllum (twospp.), Falcatifolium, Dacrycarpus, Acmopyb, Prumnopitys and Parasitaxus (one sp. each), the last being endemic to New Caledonia (Page 1988). The Araucariaceae comprises two genera, Araucaria (13 spp.) and Agathis (five spp.), and the Cupressaceae the genera Libocedrus (three spp.), Callitris (two spp.), and the monotypic and endemic Neocallitropsis (de Laubenfels 1972). No other region of the world with such a small area possesses such a rich and distinctive conifer flora. Growth forms The majority of New Caledonian conifers are tall trees but there are also small trees and shrubs. The Araucariaceae, all arborescent, includes nine species exploited for their timber (Agatbis corbassonii, A. lanceolata, A. moorei, A. ovata, Araucaria columnaris, A. bernieri, A. laubenfelsii, A. luxurians, A. subulata). The Agatbis species are among the most massive forest trees; some individuals I of the tallest species, Agatbis lanceolata, have trunks more than 2.5 m in diameter and attain a height of 30-40 m. -

Chapter 2 Geography of the survey area 2 - 1 Location and accessibility The Viti Levu South area is within longitude 177o25 ' - 178o30 'E and latitude 17o45' - 18o15'S, and within 1858250 - 1987650 mE and 3874000 - 3910000 mN in FMG coordinate system. The area covers about 4,000Km2 and occupies approximately the southern 2/5 of the Viti Levu Island, the main island of the Republic of Fiji Islands. The area extends over Rewa Province, Tailevu Province, Naitasiri Province, Namosi Province, Serua Province and Nadroga & Navosa Province. The distance from east to west is approximately 71 - 129 km and the distance from north to south is approximately 32 - 36 km. The area includes capital Suva City in the eastern side and other small towns such as Navua, Korolevu and Sigatoka etc along the southern coastal line. The total population of the Suva City is approximately 70,000. The capital is equipped with an airport at Nausori and some hotels, shops, department stores for daily necessaries and hospitals. In addition, market and the government facility and simple hospital etc exist even in each town. Concerning the traffic, the Queens Road that runs the coastal line of southern side is paved, but most of roads into inland area have not yet been paved. There is an international airport in the Nadi town along the west coast outside the area. It takes 4 hours between Nadi - Suva City by car and it takes 1.5 hours between Suva City and Sigatoka by car. During the survey of Naitasiri Province, a government dormitory at Vunidawa of approximately 50km north from Suva was available. -

It deals with the most basic characteristics of the population, its size, growth, structure and distribution. This increase amounts to an average intercensal rate of growth of 0.7 percent per year (compared to 0.8 percent per year during the previous 1986-1996 intercensal period).
