Principal’s Message

Happy May! It’s hard to believe that there are only two months of school le in this school year.

The staff at Lord Selkirk School work collaboravely throughout the school year meet our targets for our learners. Every year we establish school wide goals and strategies (based on research) that will have the greatest impact on student learning and growth. We are all very proud of the learning that has happened at Lord Selkirk this school year. May marks that me where we formally take a look at our school goals and begin this very important evaluaon process. Coming up on May 3rd, our teachers will be working on our school goals for next year and celebrang the success we have had along the way. We always look forward to this day as we assess the work we’ve done, and determine where we need to go next to connue to provide the best learning experience for our students at Lord Selkirk School.

Our focus this year has been in the three areas. 1) Academic (Literacy/Numeracy) - We have been connuing to enhance our reading instrucon, creang targeted groups focusing on improving reading for meaning (comprehension) and reading for accuracy (decoding). Teachers have connued to strengthen the reading/wring workshop model, using conferences to provide mely feedback to students. 2) Educaon for Sustainable Development— We connue our work as a Roots and Shoots school, with each classroom compleng an acon project that enhances the Elmwood community. Teachers have learning more Truth and Reconciliaon and Indigenous perspecves in connecon to developing a more sustainable society for all. 3) Safe and Caring Schools— We are connuing to strengthen our Trauma Informed Pracces, teaching the students to use the Zones of Regulaon, as well as teaching of social skills through our PBIS model. In June, we will be summarizing our work, and school year priories in our “School Report to the Community” at the end of June. We welcome feedback from our parents and encourage parents to join us once a month at our Parent Council Meengs.

In late April, our focus and aenon turned to our staffing as we begin to plan for the upcoming year. Our staffing complement is decreasing slightly, for next year. We are currently at 290 students which is significantly lower than previous years. We have seen a decrease in enrollment, as some families chose home schooling, the virtual school opon and/or chose not to send their children who were Nursery/Kindergarten age this year due COVID-19. We expect to see many of our families returning to Lord Selkirk School in the fall. There will be some staff changes for next year as some of our teaching posions presently at Lord Selkirk are ‘term posions’ and we have some staff who will be on Maternity Leave. In May and June, Mrs. Petrelli and I will be conducng interviews for posions that are open for the 2020-2021 school year.

A special thank you to our ‘Pink Day Commiee’ for their work to organize acvies and celebrate this special an-bullying campaign. We strive for every day to be a ‘Pink Day’ at Lord Selkirk and I appreciate the commitment of students to work on making Lord Selkirk School a great place to be. We are excited that the ESD commiee will be hosng the Mother’s Day sale this year to raise funds for our school playground beauficaon project.

We connue to accept Nursery and Kindergarten registraons in our office for our new school year beginning in September. If your child will be 4 years old by December 31, 2021 they are eligible to begin Nursery and for our Kinder- garten programming children must be 5 years old before December 31, 2021. Please contact the office for more informaon. We can arrange to send electronic copies of the registraon package to families by email or you can contact the office to arrange a me to pick up a registraon package. We are open from 8:00 a.m. unl 4:00 p.m. each day.

Yours in learning,

Ms. Johnston

Room 1 NURSERY and KINDERGARTEN Mr. Katopodis

Room 1 had a great month of April, learning about how winter never really leaves!

We have now finished reviewing how to write the letters of the alphabet. We are becoming experts in the alphabet and will now take our next step and use our knowledge of the alphabet to explore writing and reading! As writers we will use our knowledge of letter sounds to sound out words and inventively write the letters to the sounds that we hear. A big part of writing is to convey a message, and in Nursery/Kindergarten an important way to convey a message is to draw a picture. We will continue to develop our drawing skills by following directed drawings and then trying to add some words to our story. We will also be using our sight words to create some sentence starters such as "I like..." and "Look at the...".

We will continue to focus on reading by recognizing our sight words and creating many strategies on how to figure out new words (such as using the picture). Our sight word list is expanding and in May, students will be taking books home to read together with their family. Please make sure you give lots of time for your child to read the book, and always remember to ask questions about the book before, during and after reading.

In April, we had great success with our new exploration bins that are focused on mathematics. Students were able to count, compare quantities, create patterns, and sort objects during exploration time. During our question of the day, we are voting and comparing the votes together to practice the “more than”, “less than” comparisons as precursors to addition and subtraction.

Room 2 FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN Ms. Romaniw

This month we have continued to grow as writers and readers in so many different ways. We have been continuing to practice our sight words, which helps us read books. We are starting a “Buddy Reading” time every day after lunch. During this time, we read a sight word book to our partner all by ourselves!

One of our big highlights this month was celebrating completing Rhyme Time in Room 2. After participating in a lot of fun rhyming activities we held a book celebration to share a story written and illustrated by Room 2. We all did a great job reading our funny rhyme sentences.

In math we met “Mr. Number Bond”. He is a big, strong number ( whole ) that carries two parts that equal himself (i.e. 3 + 2 = 5)! Number bonds help us see that can be “broken” into pieces supporting me with developing a strong number sense. You can help me practice this at home too by giving me a random number and having me count the correct objects into a big circle. Then ask me to separate the number into the two smaller circles (parts) and discuss the variations that I come up with!

We have been having so much fun learning, growing and exploring together in Kindergarten!

Room 4 GRADE 1 Ms. Feliciano

April has already come and gone, it is amazing how quickly the time is moving in Room 4! In Writer’s Workshop we have officially kicked off our opinion writing unit! Thank you to the families that sent their child with a collection to help us with our writing. Room 4 has been writing away, using some new strategies to help convince their readers about their opinions. We are continuing to work in targeted reading groups with three different teachers with the students in Room 4. These groups will focus on specific reading strategies that will help us grow independently as readers.

In Math, we have been using everything we know about numbers to help us learn about subtraction. Room 4 has been practicing working with a partner to help with their problem solving skills! We continue to practice counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s and participate in daily number talks to help understand numbers. We also continue to use Dreambox in class. As always here is the link to access for some extra practice at home: https://play.dreambox.com/login/d7qd/lords

In Science, we have started an investigation about what objects are made of! So far we have discovered that certain materials can be used to make many different things and that some of the same objects can be made out of different things! We are excited to keep learning about what kinds of materials work best to help when we eventually work on our own building projects. In Social Studies, we have teamed up with Take Pride Winnipeg to help us with our Roots and Shoots project! Take Pride Winnipeg has offered to send our class cleaning supplies to help us with our clean up. We will continue to brainstorm ways to safely promote keeping our community clean with COVID-19 restrictions. I am so excited about all of the learning that we have already done this term. Keep up the great work!

Room 8 GRADE 1 Ms. Gonzales

Wow, I can’t believe there is only two months of school left! Students have worked really hard on finishing up their opinion writing unit and writing reviews on their favourite books. We will be having a writing celebration to end off the unit and start our new unit, writing fiction. In math, we continue to learn about representing numbers in different ways. Students can practice counting backwards from 100-0, forwards from 0-100, skip count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and addition and subtraction facts. This will help solidify their knowledge with representing numbers. Reminder, students can log on to Dreambox at home, if you need a help, please let me know.

We will be continuing to go on our Elmwood Community walks now that it’s warmer, please come dressed for the weather. We will be learning about the characteristics of objects and materials and going to for walks to watch the changes occurring around the Red River. Just a reminder to check Seesaw often, as I post family announcements about up coming events happening at the school. Keep up the awesome work room 8!

Room 7 GRADE 2 Ms. Maksymetz

In social studies, students will learn more about the Canadian Community. We will explore different aspects of Canada, including national symbols, and how people in communities meet their needs.

For our Writer’s Workshop, students will use what they already know about narrative writing to write short realistic fiction stories. Student partners will help each other stretch out important parts of their story by listening, visualizing, and asking questions.

For the next while, our focus in math will be on exploring 2-D shapes and 3-D objects. Students will discover the relationships among the objects and shapes. After sorting and describing 3-D objects, students will investigate what objects they can create. Students are encouraged to continue to access the online individualized numeracy program, DreamBox, at home.

Room 17 GRADE 2 Ms. Stern

These months just keep slipping by so fast, we can hardly keep up! April was Poetry month in writer's workshop, and Room 17 will be showcasing their wonderful work in the tree area during May. In math, they tackled increasing patterns with the help of our guest, Mr. E. I am very impressed with their ability to think through some very challenging patterns. We continued to improve our reading skills during our daily literacy block, and finished the alphabet chants. We are now working on the blends and diagraphs chant! Ask your child to chant it to you, as it has greatly improved their spelling and reading abilities! Way to go Room 17! We’re eagerly awaiting news of our friend, Flat Stanley, as he returns from his trips across Canada! After his 14-day quarantine, he will let us know about his adventures. May will bring about a new writing unit, opinion writing, as well as a spiral back in math to addition and subtraction before doing some more work on measurement.

Please keep up the reading and sight word activities (those who I sent it to), as well as Dreambox at home when you can! These activities really help the students get the extra practice that they need! If you have questions, please let me know! Also, the students in room 17 write a sheet in their agenda each day to let you know one thing they did at school that day. Please ask them about it and have a conversation with them! They really do a lot more than they say each day! I am looking forward to seeing the growth in these wonderful kids during the last months of grade 2!

Room 15 GRADE 2 & 3 Ms. Tien

In May we will continue learning about the growth and changes in plants. We are learning about different kinds of plants and how they survive and thrive. For example, we learned that a sequoia tree takes in 57 tonnes of carbon dioxide in a hundred years. This leads us into questions about how we protect trees from deforestation? We will continue to explore how humans replenish the plants they use and the consequences if plants are not replenished, for example after loggers harvest trees.

In Math we are focusing on making 20, 50 and 100 and finding strategies to make subtraction easier. We are also looking at place values and how we can build and break apart bigger numbers. This will take us into collecting data and making graphs.

Now that the weather has warmed up, we will take some of our learning outside. Our inquiry on our community trees for our Roots & Shoots project will have us exploring our community, sketching outdoors and understanding the procedures for tree planting. Be sure to have your child prepared to be outdoors with sunscreen, hat and proper outdoor wear. Thank you for your cooperation!

Room 36 GRADE 3 Ms. Burrows

April showers bring May flowers...or in our case, it might be snow.

Room 36 is prepared no matter what, and is looking forward to watching our school yard and neighbourhood start blooming! We're launching into some interesting things for the last couple months of school: Elements Of Art - where we learn about some basics, and have fun drawing. Delving into histories of various people in the world, and celebrating the multitude of indigenous cultures and connecting with the land will be on the agenda in social studies. From strategies in division, we'll take a look at some patterns and shapes, and make sure our number sense is on target! And as always, reading and writing will be front and centre, and we'll un- leash our powers of persuasion on the world! It's going to be a fabulous month!

Lord Selkirk School May 2021 Page 4

Room 35 GRADE 3 & 4 Mr. Telford Room 35 students have been working very hard at keeping their distance from each other in the classroom and on the playground. Please continue to have conversations about COVID safety at home. In Writer's Workshop we are working on writing books that show off what we are experts at! We having been thinking about a topic that we can teach others about, how to organize our ideas, and how to make it into a book. In Math we are learning about different types of graphs. We are creating our own questions and collecting data that we are turning into line and bar graphs. For our Roots and Shoots project, we are collecting pop tabs to donate to the Pop Tabs for Wheelchairs charity with the goal of raising enough money to purchase a wheelchair for a child in need. Thank you to all of the families that regularly check their child's Seesaw profile. We continue to use Seesaw to showcase what we are learning in class, please reconnect if you haven't checked-in, in awhile. Please make sure your child is prepared in the morning with appropriate clothing for the day. Please contact me if you have not paid student fees this year ($35) so we can make arrangements.

Room 40 GRADE 4 Ms. Ladouceur

On April 22nd we celebrated Earth Day. Students watched impactful videos about some of the things that are making our world sick. We made posters about what can and cannot be recycled in Winnipeg. Hopefully your child shared that with your household. In Reading Workshop, students have been working hard planning a trip to a Canadian City. Students researched Canada's top attractions and decided where they were going to go. The project needed to include a map, places they would sleep, eat, and activities they would like to do. To present their trip, students chose to create a Power Point Presentation, green-screen video, or poster to share with classmates. In Writing Workshop, we have been focusing in on true, small moment stories in our lives. We had a group experience with tasting a sour lemon and wrote about our perspective. Focusing on the heart of our story and stretching out the important parts is how we are learning to push our writing skills. Our focus for math is continuing to work on our multiplication and division skills to 5x5. We are exploring different math games to build our instant recall of facts. Please check out Seesaw to see some of the games we are playing. You can do them at home with your child. We said Farewell to Ms. Antonio, our student teacher, by making a well wishes book for her. We know she will do great things wherever she goes. Please check out our Roots and Shoots Poster in May's Newsletter. We are having a school-wide celebration on May 28th and can't wait to share with you all that we accomplished this year.

Room 27 GRADE 5 Ms. Balkaran

Spring is in the air! April flew by, didn’t it? I just want to start by thanking our class community and families for encouraging mask wearing and physical distancing. It’s been a tough year, but I know our class has the skills and discipline to keep each other safe. We’ve been having a pretty intense debate in our room around whether we should drink chocolate milk in school. This week, we deliver our letters/emails to Ms. Johnston to see if our arguments have enough evidence to convince her to make a change. We’re working on multiplication and learning strategies to multiply two and three digit numbers by one digit. There have been some interesting strategies during our Thinking Classroom lessons. May brings our next science unit and the end process of our Roots and Shoots project! I am excited for all of the learning we’ll do. Happy May!

Lord Selkirk School May 2021 Page 5

Room 25 GRADE 5 Mr. Frank Room 25 had a very busy April! This month will be a busy one as well, full of great learning opportunities. In math we will continue to explore decimals and division. Our literacy focus will be debating and researching debatable issues, as well as reading fantasy books. At the end of the month we will have our Roots and Shoots celebration where we will share all of our amazing vermicomposting knowledge that we have gained throughout this year’s inquiry. The weather has gotten warmer and summer is just around the corner. As a reminder students will be participating in Phys. Ed. outside so please wear weather appropriate clothing, and sunscreen is a good idea. One final reminder: students should be working on Dreambox and independently reading every night at home. If you have any questions or concerns please phone me at the school or email me at [email protected] .

Room 32 GRADE 5 & 6 Ms. Murray

This month, the students of room 32 have been getting to know their new teacher Ms. Murray. We have been learning about Indigenous culture and focusing on artists from Canada. We have been learning how to use a variety of power tools, and are using them to build and paint our own Indigenous flutes. In math we have been focusing on fractions, and problem solving with our peers. In Literacy we have been focusing on Non-Fiction books, specifically text features and how they help us gather information. We have been making our own reference books that contain each of the text features. Our Novel Study for this month is “The Tale of Despereaux.”

Room 30 GRADE 6 Ms. Raisa

In room 30 we have been learning about health, art, literacy, and math. Sometimes when it’s sunny outside we do our lessons outside. In health we are learning about gender identities and puberty. In math we are doing probability. Probability is when you find the desired outcomes and the total possible outcomes.

In art we do things like pointillism and we made a class mural piece. In literacy we are doing writing, word work and book clubs. The book clubs are reading different books such as “The Lie Tree”, “Harry Potter” and “Peter Nimble.” We get response sheets to write about the book and have meetings to talk about what we wrote and why we wrote. -Abel

THE ARTS with Ms. Cook-Dowsett

It has been an active and creative month in The Arts. Students have been learning about different styles of dance such as Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, Ballroom and Folk. We begin each class with a warm-up and are now using our time to Group Choreograph a Lip Sync Dance. Classes are competing against one another in categories that will be judged by our Elmwood sister school, George V. In turn, Lord Selkirk students are critiquing the Lip Sync dances submitted from George V classes. We are working collaboratively in creating the criteria and choreography. We hope we can share the final creations with families on Seesaw. A reminder that students must be ready to move when they come to The Arts. This means proper footwear and active wear (clothes we can move and sweat in) and properly fitted masks. As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns please email me at: [email protected] .

THE ARTS with Ms. Katie

Holy cow! It's hard to believe it's already May! We've been having lots of fun with our Dance unit in the Arts this term. So far, we've explored the concepts of space, levels, and pathways. We have also begun to explore a few key steps (step-touch, step-clap) and some basic locomotor movements (skipping, hopping, galloping). For the month of May we will be working on a super cool project: The Lip Sync Battle. To address the limitations of the pandemic, we won't be singing together, but we will be performing the heck out of some rockin' tunes, which students have suggested and voted on. We can't wait to premier the performances.

We're also very excited to announce that Rooms 36 and 15 will have the opportunity to participate in a 3-part dance learning opportunity with the Aboriginal School of Dance this month! Stay tuned to Seesaw for pictures. [email protected]

Are we entering a third wave with COVID? Public Health experts agree that we could be entering a third wave of this COVID-19 pandemic. , and Winnipeg in particular, is seeing an increase in the number of positive cases each day. With the addition of Variants of Concern, our efforts – both at school and at home - to reduce the number of contacts and positive cases must continue. As Dr. Roussin would say – Now is not the time for sleep overs! Now is not the time to gather for birthday parties! Now is the time to stay home when ANYONE in our household is ill. Vaccines offer a light at the end of this pandemic tunnel, but we are still quite a way from being in the clear. Let’s all work together to continue our efforts in reducing the spread of COVID-19 and its variants. If you have any question about possible COVID-19 symptoms, we ask that you please contact Health Links (204 -788 -8200 or toll-free at 1-888 -315 -9257 ).
