2019 PRIDE WINNIPEG FESTIVAL • 5 A Message From THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF MANITOBA

As the Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, I am pleased to extend vice-regal greetings to the volunteers, members and friends of Pride Winnipeg. Your organization’s good work continues to ensure that Manitobans’ shared values of respect, equality and inclusion are honoured and reflected in all aspects of the outstanding quality of life we all enjoy in our province. The growth and solidarity of the provincial LGBTTQ* community is a testament to the dedication and hard work of local members who recognized the strength of organization in working for the greater good. By encouraging dignity, respect and acceptance for all Manitobans, your work is helping so many people live their best lives, empowered by the rights and freedoms that every human being deserves. I commend you for your leadership in furthering human rights and for the lasting impact it will have for generations to come. I wish you continued success.

THE HONOURABLE JANICE C. FILMON, C.M., O.M. Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba

WWW.PRIDEWINNIPEG.COM A Message From THE PREMIER OF MANITOBA

On behalf of all Manitobans, it gives me great pleasure to extend my warmest greetings to those participating in the 2019 Pride Winnipeg Festival. The Pride Winnipeg Festival puts the best of Manitoba on display to the world - our diversity, our inclusiveness, our compassion and our joy. These values bind us together as Manitobans and have made our province the wonderful place it is. For more than three decades, Pride Winnipeg has helped lead the way in Manitoba in advocating for the rights and interests of Manitoba’s LGBTTQ* community. Through its message of positive change, it has accomplished so much. Pride Winnipeg’s advocacy has broken barriers, changed attitudes and has given Manitobans the ability to be true to themselves and more accepting of others. I join all Manitobans in conveying our appreciation to Pride Winnipeg’s many volunteers for their commitment to ensuring the Pride Winnipeg Festival continues to be an exciting, joyful event each year.

THE HONOURABLE BRIAN PALLISTER Premier of Manitoba

2019 PRIDE WINNIPEG FESTIVAL • 7 A Message From THE MAYOR OF WINNIPEG

Welcome everyone! This year’s Pride of Colour Festival highlights the intersection of race and colour in the Gender, Sexual and Relationship Diversities community with a goal of bringing the holistic GSRD community, in fact the whole of Winnipeg, together. I’m delighted to join with all of you in this celebration of awareness, acceptance, activism — and PRIDE! Pride celebrations unite hundreds of millions of people across the planet. Here in Winnipeg, the “Pride of the Prairies” brings the GSRD community and their allies, supporters, and friends together in one of the largest Pride celebrations between Toronto and Ontario. I hope that everyone enjoys their Pride celebrations and the joyful, exuberant atmosphere that comes with this festival. I hope that everyone will also take a moment to rededicate themselves to stand against racism and — wherever and however you see or experience it. I want to recognize the hard work of Pride Winnipeg, the volunteers, and the sponsors who make the Festival possible. Funds raised go to support community groups that help increase the visibility of traditionally socially excluded groups or promote diversity and inclusiveness amongst the GSRD community. On behalf of the City of Winnipeg, I want to wish everyone happiness, joy, inspiration, and freedom to be. Warmly,

BRIAN BOWMAN Mayor of Winnipeg

WWW.PRIDEWINNIPEG.COM A Message From THE PRESIDENT

It’s my honor and privilege to welcome you to Pride Winnipeg 2019 on behalf of our Board of Director and Volunteers. This year marks the 32nd annual . We are as always incredibly excited bringing you Pride again and hope that this continues to grow as it has done over the previous years. What makes this year so special is that we are commemorating 50 years of partial decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada and Stonewall Roits in USA. Not only does this symbolize the birth of our GSRD community as uniquely tied to the fight for our rights both nationally and globally, but also how much more work we have to do to make our spaces more inclusive and discrimination free. 2019 is the year of change, we have a new Kids Zone which comes with another stage for having all age inclusive programming and performances. We are also launching our Pride Guide App to ensure our commitment towards environmental sustainability and accessibility. Pride Winnipeg’s 2019 Theme “Pride of Colour” is a pivotal point towards festival’s commitment of inclusion and celebrating diversity. “With growing resurgence in the GSRD community, the understanding of marginalized and generally silenced voices has started making and taking over spaces. One of the frequently overlooked and commonly ignored intersections is race and colour of GSRD community. Generally, people of colour and pride are perceived as two ends of the whole community, where one is labelled as the symbol of privilege and the other is categorically oppressed and marginalized. Actively bridging the gap is the only way to bring the holistic GSRD community together.” Happy Pride!

With the growing resurgence in the GSRD community, the understanding of marginalized and generally silenced voices have started making and taking over spaces, one of the frequently overlooked and commonly ignored intersection is race and colour of GSRD community.

Generally, people of colour and pride are perceived as two ends of the whole community, where one is labelled as the symbol of privilege and the other is categorically oppressed and marginalized, active bridging of the gap is the only way to bring the holistic GSRD community together.

The theme will focus on the diversity in GSRD community and will send a strong message of inclusion. The concept seeks to amplify the voices of racialized minorities and help raise awareness of the barriers that may have prevented them from participating in previous Pride Festivals.

Thousands of people arrive at the Forks every year to celebrate our diverse and beautiful GSRD community. At Pride, we acknowledge resilience, hope, how far we’ve come, and how far we have left to go. However, we need to also start doing the same thing with respect to our impact on the environment.

The United Nations tells us we have only until 2030 to dramatically cut our carbon emissions and prevent the worst outcomes of climate change, which include global droughts, heatwaves, and disease outbreaks. Worse still, the brunt of climate change impacts and the declining health of our environment will disproportionately affect the poorest and most marginalized people on the planet. Sustainability is a social justice issue.

Pride has always been about creating a better future for those who come after us, and it’s more important than ever to do what we can to live sustainably. We need strong leadership on climate change and the environment, but all of us will need to rapidly reduce our emissions and use of resources.

Thanks for your support as we do our part! We hope that when you go home after the festival, you’ll continue the conversation about getting around, eating, and buying more sustainably.

Happy Pride!

BAMBII SUNDAY • 6 PM • TD MAINSTAGE Kirsten Azan, baptized Bambii, is one of Canada’s most compelling new DJs. Whether online or on dancefloors, her political and musical vernacular give credence to dance music’s ever expanding reach, the relationships it helps forge between individuals, cultures and spaces. As proof, the last year has taken her across North America, on stages like Brooklyn’s AFROPUNK, and across Europe as a solo artist and on support for some of the world’s most relevant artists - Mykki Blanco, Kelela, and MikeQ, to name just a few. This summer, she will add Asia to her growing list of tour destinations to promote her debut, solo EP. At home, her event series ‘JERK’ is still hitting capacity and still true to its roots. Elsewhere, her work has been publicized in FLARE, Wonderland, CRACK and The FADER.

2019 PRIDE WINNIPEG FESTIVAL • 45 APOLLO SUNS SATURDAY & SUNDAY • 12 PM • TD MAINSTAGE

Born from the fusing of ten Winnipeg, Canada based musicians, Apollo Suns have created a refreshing and innovative sound combining instrumental, jazz, rock and psychedelic music. Some of their most notable shows include support slots for The Brooks, Mariachi Ghost, Five Alarm Funk, Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, Kobo Town and Bend Sinister; as well as showcases at Canadian Music Week, Festival Du Voyageur, Big Fun Music Festival, Ness Creek Music Festival, Golden Sound Music Festival and Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Apollo Suns will be releasing their sophomore EP, Dawn Offerings, during the spring of 2019 and then supporting the album with a heavy touring schedule and festival showcases. WWW.PRIDEWINNIPEG.COM SUPER DUTY TOUGH WORK SATURDAY & SUNDAY • 2 PM • TD MAINSTAGE

Golden era taste, current era based. Above the clouds, below surface. Seven musicians, one MC. Inspired by the dirty jazz loop sound of 90s east coast hip hop, Super Duty Tough Work are the live incarnation of hip hop culture’s quintessential time. Revered for their methodically curated sets, SDTW mixes laid back with high energy, for a satisfaction-guaranteed journey through culture where loops are slayed and jewels are the tools of the trade. Since forming in early 2015, Super Duty Tough Work has quickly established itself as the region’s premier live hip hop outfit. Fronted by Brendan Grey (aka Giant #3 of Sleeping Giants) and backed by a well-curated ensemble of highly skilled local and international musicians, SDTW is a seven-piece powerhouse. Heavily influenced by the jazz-inspired vibe of early ‘90s east coast hip-hop, SDTW mixes live instrumentation with an array of vocal styles, combining laid-back and high-energy into a satisfaction-guaranteed performance for hip hop heads and music lovers alike. In addition to making their debut at Pride, this year’s performance coincides with the release of Super Duty Tough Work’s first single from their upcoming record, slated for a September release. ‘The Famine’ is battle cry of a summer anthem, driven by a stuck-in-your-head horn line and explosive drums, complimented by Grey’s sharp wit, as he delivers a biting analysis of artistic stagnation and the ups and downs of being a creative in the Canadian Prairies. THANK YOU For Your Support!

PRIDE WINNIPEG: A 100% volunteer run not-for-profit organization that produces one of the largest Pride celebrations between Toronto and Vancouver of GSRD individuals and their allies, supporters and friends. Our mission is to affirm the lives of everyone by generating and participating in events that celebrate the history, culture, spirit and pride of people within the Winnipeg community.

AS PRIDE FESTIVITIES IN WINNIPEG CONTINUE TO GROW, SO DO OUR COSTS. We continue to rely increasingly on the generous support of our sponsors, community partners, and advertisers to help fund the Pride celebrations. Most of Pride Winnipeg’s events – the flag-raising ceremony, vigil, rally, parade, and 2-day outdoor festival at The Forks – are FREE to attend and open to everyone.
