TUSCANY ARCHAEOLOGICAL ITINERARIES A Journey from Prehistory to the Roman Age ONCE UPON A TIME... That’s how fables start, once upon a time there was – what? A region bathed by the sea, with long beaches the colour of gold, rocky cliffs plunging into crystalline waters and many islands dotting the horizon. There was once a region cov- ered by rolling hills, where the sun lavished all the colours of the earth, where olive trees and grapevines still grow, ancient as the history of man, and where fortified towns and cities seem open-air museums. There was once a region with ver- dant plains watered by rivers and streams, surrounded by high mountains, monasteries, and forests stretching as far as the eye could see. There was, in a word, Tuscany, a region that has always been synonymous with beauty and nature, art and history, especially Medieval and Renaissance history, a land whose fame has spread the world over. And yet, if we stop to look closely, this region offers us many more treasures and new histories, the emotion aroused only by beauty. Because along with the most famous places, monuments and museums, we can glimpse a Tuscany that is even more ancient and just as wonderful, bear- ing witness not only to Roman and Etruscan times but even to prehistoric ages. Although this evidence is not as well known as the treasures that has always been famous, it is just as exciting to discover. This travel diary, ad- dressed to all lovers of Tuscany eager to explore its more hidden aspects, aims to bring us back in time to discover these jewels.

  • The Fennel Fields a Little Scene Setting
A HISTORY OF BORGO FINOCCHIETO by Judy Canton, with side notes by Mary Grace Hicks The Fennel Fields Finocchieto is a charming name. Finocchio is sweet fennel and finocchieto means fennel orchard or fennel fields, just as frutto is fruit and frutteto means orchard. Sweet fennel grows wild all over Tuscany in fields, hedgerows, at roadsides, along the railway, and in gardens. Finocchieto was no doubt known locally for the wild fennel plants growing around the slopes of Bibbiano. It has certainly had the name since 1318, and maybe for much longer. To this day, when the wild fennel seeds ripen every year at the end of August, gatherers of all types and both sexes go to work collecting the seeds that will stud the delicious local salami, finocchiona, with flavor. It has been eaten for centuries, usually on thick slices of unsalted bread and accompanied with a glass of red wine. The farm at Finocchieto, like many Tuscan country properties no longer in agricultural use, has found a new lease on life. Its name, however, will link it to the old way of life and the tradition of eating slices of finocchiona with bread and wine will remind those who enjoy its stone walls and quiet, beautiful setting of the thousands who have already appreciated the same delights in its long history. A Little Scene Setting The part of Italy where Finocchieto was built has a long prehistory; - 228 - a long period of settlement before we have evidence of the farm’s existence. Navigable rivers and valleys were of fundamental importance in the siting of early settlements and in spreading cultural influence.

  • The Enduring Appeal of Tuscany and Umbria to the British
102-117:Layout 1 11/07/2018 17:05 Page 110 THE ENDURING APPEAL OF TUSCANY AND UMBRIA TO THE BRITISH Tenuta di murlo the lavander garden of Subtilia (il giardino di lavande di Villa Subtilia) Article by Adam Jacot de Boinod castello-spaltenna “Tuscany is especially flowery,” wrote DH Lawrence in 1926, “being wetter than Sicily and more homely than the Roman hills” and certainly the region has enjoyed an enduring appeal to the British traveller to which Umbria has now been added by the last generation of holidaymakers. First in 1363 there was a mercenary interest with the legendary Sir John Hawkwood. Later came the connoisseurs collecting Tuscan art before the Romantic poets found their own sacred treasure in the province when Wordsworth in 1837 wrote a poem on the life and character of St. Francis. Tennyson also succumbed with his descriptive lines: “In lands of palm, of orange blossom, of olive, aloe, and maize and vine”. Dickens warmed to the great Tuscan cities describing Siena’s piazza with its “great broken-nosed fountain in it” and Florence as being “stern and sombre”. Browning, Ruskin, EM Forster and Henry James were then all to follow in these illustrious literary footsteps. The landscapes have an agricultural precision and elegance. It is all so engaging and life enhancing as my senses were enlivened own the experience with its full dramatic hollow silence. Back by the many stimuli of their smells, sights and sounds. Fields of outside and the black and white façade is beautifully offset by hues poppies, margherita (daisies) and the tiny ‘ranuncolo’ buttercups of pink as the cloudless blue sky completes the aesthetic picture.
