Summers’ Knights Valley estate, Summers Ranch, had its viticultural beginnings as a 10-acre vineyard planted more than 30 years ago by Dan Duckhorn. The 1985 vintage from the Knights Valley vineyard, with purchased by the Finkelstein family (Whitehall Lane), gained acclaim when it was proclaimed the Merlot of the Year by Wine & Spirits Magazine. The Summers purchased the property in 1987 from the Hassan family. At that time the vineyard was still mostly planted to Merlot grapes which were sold to various wineries, such as Newton, Ferrari Carano and more. Over the years, the vineyard was replanted and expanded to a total of 26.6 +/- acres of various Bordeaux varietals, primarily . Summers continues to make a small bottling of reserve Merlot from this storied vineyard as well as exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon, , , Petite Sirah, and wines. The various Bordeaux varietals are also used as part of Summers “Grandmaster” Red Blend “Checkmate” wine. The property is located in an exquisite setting of majestic oaks with panoramic views to the western hills. In addition to the vineyard, the property features a 30 acre-ft pond, a 3BR/2.5BA main home and a 2BR/1BA granny unit. Knights Valley is located northwest of Calistoga, between Mt. St. Helena and the Alexander Valley. It is one of Sonoma’s warmest appellations, and its volcanic soils and close proximity to the Napa Valley have led to increased interest in Bordeaux varietals from the appellation in recent years.
