Connecting influencers and ideas for global mission

Frequently Asked Questions about the Lausanne Movement

What is the Lausanne Movement? Lausanne connects influencers across ideas, regions, and generations for global mission. Our vision for global mission is to see the gospel for every person, an evangelical church for every people, Christ-like leaders for every church, and kingdom impact in every sphere of society.

The Lausanne Movement has its beginnings in 1974, when convened the first International Congress on World Evangelization in Lausanne, Switzerland. This Congress, attended by over 2,400 participants from 150 countries, was called ‘a formidable forum, possibly the widest- ranging meeting of Christians every held’ by TIME magazine. John Stott was chief architect of The Lausanne Covenant, which issued from this gathering. It represents Lausanne’s foundation and heart for pursuing global mission.

Lausanne’s third global congress, held in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2010, gathered 4,000 leaders from 198 countries and has been called ‘the widest and most ethnically diverse gathering of evangelical Christian leaders than ever before’ ( Today).

The Lausanne Movement has helped to introduce and catalyze missional ideas and strategies such as Unreached People Groups, the 10/40 Window, and holistic mission. Today, over 30 Lausanne networks focus on issues critical to global mission such as diaspora, Islam, church planting, children at risk, and more.

What are Lausanne’s core beliefs? The Lausanne Movement’s core beliefs can be found in our three foundational documents: The Lausanne Covenant (1974), The Manila Manifesto (1989), and The Cape Town Commitment (2010).

What is the Lausanne Younger Leaders Gathering 2016 (YLG 2016)? YLG2016 is a gathering of 1,000 emerging leaders between the ages of 25-35 from over 160 nations who will connect, pray, and discern together God’s leading of their generation for global mission. This gathering will be held in August 2016 in Jakarta, Indonesia. We received thousands of nominations for this gathering and participants have been invited through an extensive, prayerful, regionally based selection process.

During the gathering, participants will be connecting in issue-based workshops and regional groups, strategic brainstorming ‘labs’, and with mentors—senior leaders in global mission today. They will also be invited to participate in an initiative called the Younger Leaders Generation (YLGen).

Occurring once a generation, YLG2016 is the third Younger Leaders Gathering the Lausanne Movement has convened (Singapore 1987, Malaysia 2006).

What is the Younger Leaders Generation (YLGen)? More than a one-time event, YLG2016 will serve as a springboard for the Younger Leaders Generation (YLGen). YLGen is a ten-year commitment to walk alongside YLG2016 participants through regionally based mentoring, networking, and cutting-edge missional resourcing. The vision for YLGen extends beyond the 1,000 participants at YLG2016 to also connect many more emerging leaders in the generation who are passionately committed to God’s mission.
