E-mail: [email protected] The main phytogeographic regions within the eastern part of the Indochinese Peninsula are delimited on the basis of analysis of recent literature on geology, geomorphology and climatology of the region, as well as numerous recent literature information on phytogeography, flora and vegetation. The following six phytogeographic regions (at the rank of floristic province) are distinguished and outlined within eastern Indochina: Sikang-Yunnan Province, South Chinese Province, North Indochinese Province, Central Annamese Province, South Annamese Province and South Indochinese Province. Short descriptions of these floristic units are given along with analysis of their floristic relationships. Special floristic analysis and consideration are given to the Orchidaceae as the largest well-studied representative of the Indochinese flora. 1. Tt has been suggested by Dr. Fritz Kranzliu that the species of Dcn~ drochilum which I have assigned to the section Acoridmm ought to constitute a distinct genus. Dr. Kriinzlin asserts that the form of the labellum is quite distinctive in Acoridiuin on account of its likeness to the letter E. When I studied DendrochiluDi tenclhun in the preparation of Fascicle I of ^'^Orchidaceae" I felt strongly that it belonged to a genus entirely distinct from DendrocliUum because of the absence of stelidia from the column and of the peculiar subfiliform leaves. Since then I have been convinced by a study of more material that Acoridiuin belongs to DendrocliiJum. In the first place, the E-formed labellum on which Dr. Kranzlin lays emphasis is only characteristic of a majority of the species of the section Acoridiuin and is not found in D. turpe, D. oligan- fJiun), D. ]ia.'<fatum, I). This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract A comprehensive study on the orchid diversity in Penang Hill, Penang, Malaysia was conducted from 2004 to 2008 with the objective to evaluate the presence of orchid species listed by Curtis (J Strait Br R Asiat Soc 25:67–173, 1894) after more than 100 years. A total of 85 species were identified during this study, of which 52 are epiphytic or lithophytic and 33 are terrestrial orchids. This study identified 57 species or 64.8% were the same as those recorded by Curtis (1894), and 78 species or 66.1% of Turner’s (Gar- dens’ Bull Singap 47(2):599–620, 1995) checklist of 118 species for the state of Penang including 18 species which were not recorded by Curtis (1894) and the current study but are actually collected from Penang Hill. A comparison table of the current findings against Curtis (1894) and Turner (1995) is provided which shows only 56 species were the same in all three studies. The preferred account for comparison was Curtis’ (1894) list as his report was specifically for the areas around Penang Island especially Penang Hill, Georgetown and Ayer Itam areas. -

The study aimed to record species composition and distribution of orchids in the furtherance of orchid conservation objective in the gazetted conservation area. A total of 95 species and 30 genera were collected from South Rim, Kawang, and Nepenthes trails. The collection consists of 91 epiphytes, two terrestrials, and two mycoheterotrophs. More orchids were found in the riverine than inland areas. Our study on the species composition based on the vegetation types shows that the presence of inconspicuous and achlorophyllous, either mycoheterotrophic or leafless epiphytic orchids, are indicators of the undisturbed vegetation types. Though the finding was preliminary and brief, our encounter of endemic and rare species underlines the importance of Sungai Kangkawat forest area as an orchid biodiversity hotspot. -

Sporadic floristic exploration has been made for as long as 60 years but no more than 60 species of orchids had ever recorded. Thus, the intensive orchid exploration in Phu Kradueng plateau was conducted from October, 2014 to February, 2016. Together with herbarium specimens and orchid’s census data, it was suggested that as many as 111 species of orchids should have been found on the plateau. Thus far, however, only 78 species had been recorded, and as many as 33 species still have not been seen in this study. ABSTRACT After 7 years of intensive explorations during 2013-2020 in South Andaman Islands, we recorded a total of 1376 wild and naturalized vascular plant taxa representing 1364 species belonging to 701 genera and 153 families, of which 95% of the taxa are based on primary collections. The second conference followed 2 years later in 1969, together with the Floralies in Vincennes, Paris. 19 years later, in 1988 the EOCCE was again in Paris, the conference program was in a building at the Trocadero, the orchid exhibition was in a tent on the Champs de Mars, both localities with the perfect view to the most famous landmark of Paris, the Eiffel-tower. I still remember the storm during one afternoon, strong enough to force the responsible of the organization committee to shut down the exhibition for some hours. And now in 2018 we saw the 3rd EOCCE again in Paris, not in the heart of the town, but not too far away. -

CONTRIBUTION TO THE BRYOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE OF MALAYSIA II. KEDAH PEAK P. Tixier* Kedah Peak (Gunong Jerai, 1,350 m), an isolated hill above the rice fields and near the sea, is at about forty kilometers South of Alor Star, the chief town of the Kedab State. One may think that the massive rocks are granitic. Dr. B.C. Stone of the University of Kuala Lumpur notes the ressemblance between this mountain and Mt. Bokor in Cambodia on the border of Thailand Gulf. This two stations are situated just above the sea shore and received directly the South-East moonson. Yet some difference may be noted: the Bohor is a wide plateau of about 30 km long, between Kampot and Sre Am bel and it is probable that its vegetal formations occupy all the mari time front of the Cardamones Range till the Thai border. On the other hand, Kedah Peak remains a regularly sloping massive of only 10 km in length and without any connection with other hill ranges; its slopes come steeply down to the sea and the plain. The two stations have a real dry season but the Bokor is probably wetter than the Kedah Peak because its annual rainfall is 3-4,000 rom, but only 2,000 mmjyear in the Kedah Plain. Considering the orientation of the massive, the southern and the northern faces are drier, the other ones wetter. There are no real different levels of vegetation along the slopes. The lowland forest remains poorly known botanically, and from the sea side, the first formation is the mangrove forest. -
