Sklizkova Moscow, Russia PRAGMATICS OF LINGUOCULTURAL ASPECT OF HERALDRY Abstract: As a complex and multilevel sign system heraldry includes separate semiotic subsystems such as colour (tinctures), figures, legends etc. with their own semantics, syntactics, and pragmatics. They can be used together within the heraldry or separately. Thus linguocultural component of heraldry expresses itself in different units. The structure of heraldic sign resembles a linguistic sign, especially the ancient systems of non-alphabetic writing. Semantic kernel is contaminated by additive elements showing the paradigm. Pure linguistic component is manifested in heraldic mottoes and blazon. Jargon du blazon is a specific language, quite productive even in modern times. Heraldic terminology was the means of cross-cultural communication in Europe. Motto is a short capacious aphorism close to a cry, written in a native or dominant in a culture language. The blazon is connected with heraldry directly and possesses all the features of “specific language” (grammar, semantics etc.). Literature as the mirror of the epochs reflects all spirits of the times. Heraldry manifests itself in literature in several aspects. It creates an air, background for a plot or displays the sense forming component of the composition. Besides there are many special heraldic resources fully dedicated to heraldry, its terminology, blazon, pragmatics etc. Intermediate linguocultural character of heraldry, language, literature, and their semiotic functioning is the linking element of these apparently different aspects of culture. -

Platoff Introduction Viewers of international sporting events have become accustomed to seeing informal sporting flags waved by citizens of various countries. The most famil- iar of these flags, of course, are the “Boxing Kangaroo” flag used to represent Australia and the “Fighting Kiwi” flag used by fans from New Zealand. Both of these flags have become common at the Olympic Games when athletes from those nations compete. Recently a new flag of this type has been displayed at international soccer matches and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Unlike the Kangaroo and Kiwi flags, this new flag has been constructed using a defaced national flag, the Russian tricolor flag of white, blue, and red horizontal stripes, readopted as the flag of the Russian Federation after the breakup of the Soviet Union. A number of variations of the flag design have been used, but all of them contain two elements: the Russian text Vperëd Rossiia, which means “Forward Russia”, and a bear which appears to be break- ing its way out of the flag. -

Robert Tierney, Chair NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission 1 Centre Street, 9th Floor New York, NY 10007 Dear Chairman Tierney, We write to request that the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission consider the designation of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection, located at 59 East 2nd Street in Manhattan, as a New York City Landmark. The stately Russian Orthodox Cathedral (at 74’ across, it stands the width of 3 city lots), is one of only three Russian Orthodox Cathedrals in Manhattan. The different phases in the building’s history speak to both the greater immigrant experience in New York, and more specifically to the experience of the Russian Orthodoxy in the first half of the 20th Century. The cathedral, made of rock‐cut Kentucky limestone, was designed in the gothic style by the renowned architect Josiah Cleveland Cady, who would later build such iconic New York City landmarks as the original Metropolitan Opera House, and the West 77th Street frontage and auditorium of the American Museum of Natural History, among others. The history of the cathedral dates back to 1867, when houses stood in its place. That year, the New York City Mission Society converted the house on the easternmost lot into the Olivet Chapel. The church catered to the local immigrant population, offering services in German, Hungarian, Italian, and Russian. In 1891, Cady laid the cornerstone for the current cathedral, which was originally named the Olivet Memorial Church. At this time, the Mission Society was focusing on a new institutional approach, consolidating its programming into churches which provided ample space and resources to serve needy communities. -

English and American students Thave described and analyzed with adequate care events which occurred in Moscow and Petrograd, but there have been no comparable efforts to study the peripheries of the Russian Empire. In the case of Ukraine this negligence was due to a general unawareness of the existence of a people in Southern Russia distinct Erom those in the North. The fact that both the Ukrainians and the Russians claim the same early history has been a source of considerable consternation to the uninitiated observer. In the past vari- ous Russian writers, among them Prince Alexander Vol- konsky and Prince Serge Obolensky, have written polemics based on the thesis that there is no Ukrainian nation but only a Little Russian branch of the Russian nation. Ukrain- ian historians and polemicists have countered with the assertion that the Muscovite tsars usurped Ukraine's ancient name of Rus. An attempt to disentangle the various claims and counter- claims advanced by the Russian and Ukrainian historians would go beyond the scope of this study and would be of no practical value because the distinctiveness of the Ukrain- ians is now generally recognized. -

254 Аннотации Summaries Naumov O.N. Private correspondence as a heraldic source Annotation. The article reveals the source study possibilities of private corre- spondence of the second half of the XIX - the first half of the XX century. to study Russian heraldry. The problems that were addressed in the letters were identified and analyzed, including the search and approval of the emblems of the nobility, their iconography and semantics, biographies of heraldists, the preparation of new publications, the history of arms studies, etc. The evolution of heraldic sub- jects in letters is shown. The categories of persons whose letters contain infor- mation about emblems are listed. The article is written on the basis of numerous and diverse archival materials. To the heraldic attribution of a portrait of an unknown man from the collection of the Pushkin Museum named after A.S. Pushkin Annotation. The article provides attribution of a male portrait of the 16th vu. from the collection of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. Based on a com- prehensive genealogical, heraldic and biographical analysis, the name of the per- son depicted on it is established, the dating and place of creation of the canvas, its belonging to the Flemish school of painting are clarified.
