[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note Allt-lwyd was the residence of the Hughes family, descended from William Hughes of Rhos Tyddyn, Devil's Bridge, Cardiganshire. William's son, William, was vicar of Llanilar and married Dorothy, daughter of Thomas Evans of Ty Mawr, Talsarn. Their son, John Hughes (1768-1821) of Glanrafon married Jane Edwards, the widow of Thomas Evans of Llanilar. Their heir, John Hughes (1805-1852), was the first member of the family to reside at Allt-lwyd. According to the landowners return of 1873, John's eldest son, John George Parry Hughes (1837-1906) owned 1,317 acres with an annual rental of £1,238. John George Parry Hughes married Elizabeth Charlotte Mary, eldest daughter of Col. J.A. Lloyd- Philipps the owner of the adjacent Mabws estate, and of Dale Castle in Pembrokeshire. We raised £955! Particular credit goes to Peter Gardner, who once again nurtured choice sweet-pea seedlings of named varieties and sold them, individually potted, at a table in the middle of the hall. I only secured one, a dark blue, but it’s now six feet tall and flowering profusely in a pot by my front door. We catch the scent as we go in and out. Joy Neal provided some extremely choice houseplants, most of which were snapped up in minutes. Divided chunks of good garden perennials and new seedling veg and flowers also sold very well. Jan Eldridge provided us with a really professional banner: attached to the railings at the Penparcau roundabout for two weeks prior to the sale, this increased our visibility to the public, who queued eagerly till the doors opened. Before the doors opened The summer excursions run by John and Sue Wildig have also been well subscribed and offered a varied and fascinating range of experiences.
