National Fire Protection Association The National Fire Association (NFPA) has developed a color-coded number system called NFPA 704. The system uses a color-coded diamond with four quadrants in which numbers are used in the upper three quadrants to signal the degree of health hazard (blue), flammability hazard (red), and reactivity hazard (yellow). The bottom quadrant is used to indicate special hazards. The NFPA system is good for alerting personnel of the degree of hazard of the chemical and helpful in drawing attention to storage needs and the necessary emergency equipment needed. This system does not indicate chronic health hazards. Hazard Health Hazard Flammability Hazard Stability Hazard Rating (blue) (red) (yellow) 4 Substance considered highly toxic Substance considered a flammable Substance that in itself is readily Severe under OSHA’s Hazard liquid under OSHA’s Hazard capable of detonation or explosive Communication Standard. Under Communication Standard. decomposition or explosive Hazard emergency conditions, these reaction at normal temperatures substances can be lethal. and pressures. This includes substances that are sensitive to localized thermal or mechanical shock at normal temperatures and pressures. Substance considered explosive under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard. 3 Substance considered highly toxic Substance considered a flammable Substance that in itself is capable Serious under OSHA’s Hazard liquid under OSHA’s Hazard of detonation or explosive Communication Standard. Under Communication Standard. decomposition or explosive Hazard emergency conditions, this reaction, but that require a strong substance can cause serious or initiating source or must be heated permanent injury. under confinement before initiation. Substance considered explosive under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard. 2 Substance considered toxic under Substance considered a Substance normally undergoes a Moderate OSHA’s Hazard Communication combustible liquid under OSHA’s violent chemical change at elevated Hazard Standard. Under emergency Hazard Communication Standard. temperatures and pressures. conditions, this substance can Substance considered explosive cause temporary incapacitation or under OSHA’s Hazard residual injury. Communication Standard. 1 Substance not considered toxic Substance considered a Normally stable material but Slight under OSHA’s Hazard combustible liquid under OSHA’s become unstable at elevated Communication Standard. Under Hazard Communication Standard. temperatures and pressures. Hazard emergency conditions, this Substance considered explosive substance can cause significant under OSHA’s Hazard irritation. Communication Standard. 0 Substance not considered toxic Substance is not considered Normally stable material that does Minimal under OSHA’s Hazard combustible or flammable under not react with water. Substance not Communication Standard. Under OSHA’s Hazard Communication considered explosive under Hazard emergency conditions, this Standard.
