NAME: 15/02/2019 FRIDAY UNIT 2: ISALM Afterlife (Akhirah) 2 Marker: What is meant by Akhirah? ANSWER: The Muslim term for the belief in the Final Judgement and life after death. What is meant by Al-Qadr? The Muslim term for ‘predestination’ which means Muslims believe that God has set out the destiny of all things. Muslims believe that life continues after the body has died. They believe that this life is preparation for the afterlife (akhirah). Human beings have just one life on Earth and it is their choice how they live it. The choices they make in this life will determine how they live the afterlife. Al-Aadr (implications for human freedom) For Muslims the will of Allah is supreme and so there is an acknowledgement that a person's life is mapped out and that the devoted follower accepts and is obedient to that calling and destiny Al- Qadr. (Life has been mapped out for them by Allah) Muslim beliefs about Al-Qadr. (predestination) God has a divine masterplan for everyone that is predestined to take place. This is all part of his plan for the world and all of creation. God knows all things in absolute detail - beyond our imagining Insha'Allah (if God is willing') is a phrase showing a believer's submission to God and his will. They believe that they will only succeed in their own plans if God is also willing to make them happen. Attitudes to Al-Qadr come from the Kutub (books) of Islam. NAME: 15/02/2019 FRIDAY Muslims believe that we can never know the reasons behind the universe, but that it is all part of a larger picture. Everything is part of a larger plan. God is the all-knowing one, his knowledge is complete and perfect. He even knows the secrets of our hearts: He knows what is within the heavens and earth and knows what you conceal and what you declare. And Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts. (Qur'an 64.4) O God, who knows the inmost secrets of our hearts; lead us out of the darkness into the light. (A prayer of Muhammad) Islam teaches that God has eternal foreknowledge. It teaches that God is responsible for all things and that he has a divine plan for all of us (al-Qadr). God has a masterplan: everything that happens is predestined to take place; it is all part of his design. He is the cause of all things and the whole of creation is under his control. God knows all things in the greatest detail, with accuracy that we, as humans, could never imagine. Muslims believe that things which some people might call coincidences are, in fact, part of God's plan. The word insha'Allah expresses the belief that all events are outside our own control; they are in the hands of God. When Muslims say Insha'Allah' they are acknowledging that they are in submission to God. They will only succeed in their own plans if God is also willing to make them happen. Insha’Allah comes from joining the Arabic words 'Allah' and 'his will'. It is a very common phrase among Muslims, for example: 'I will get to school on time, insha'Allah!" (Qur'an 18.23-4). Exam Questions Explain what Muslims mean when they say that God has a divine plan. Implications for human freedom. If all things are apart of Gods plan or the will of God, then that also must include suffering, pain diseases and natural disasters. It is hard to understand how good can come out of these things. Islam teaches that painful experiences need to be viewed as opportunities for our growth as human beings. Islam teaches that we all have free will and God will hold us accountable for our decisions and actions on the Day of Judgement. KEY WORD: Free will = Ability to make choices independently, nothing has been predestined. Humans are not puppets or robots; we have the ability to choose right from wrong. God wants us to follow the ‘straight path', but it is up to us to make the right choices. Central to Islamic thought is the idea that life is a test and we need to learn how to turn away from evil. (Qur'an 30.41) Islam teaches that the human ability to exercise free will does not contradict al- Qadr. But God's foreknowledge is not the cause of people's actions; people make their own decisions. Human beings are free to choose whether to believe in God or not and to do good deeds or not. However, God knows in advance what their choices will be. Each decision a person makes is part of a bigger plan that is known only to God. Therefore, human beings are accountable for their actions because they are freely chosen NAME: 15/02/2019 FRIDAY Explain what Islam teaches about human freedom [8] PLAN Mention belief in predestination (Al-Qadr) e.g. God has a divine master plan.
