How to Use this Guide The New-York Historical Society, one of America’s pre-eminent cultural institutions, is dedicated to fostering research, presenting history and art exhibitions, and public programs that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, New-York Historical has a mission to explore the richly layered political, cultural and social history of New York City and State and the nation, and to serve as a national forum for the discussion of issues surrounding the making and meaning of history. Student Historians are high school interns at New-York Historical who explore our museum and library collection and conduct research using the resources available to them within a museum setting. Their project this academic year was to create a guide for fellow high school students preparing for U.S. History Exams, particularly the U.S. History & Government Regents Exam. Each Student Historian chose a piece from our collection that represents a historical event or theme often tested on the exam, collected and organized their research, and wrote about their piece within its historic context. The intent is that this catalog will provide a valuable supplemental review material for high school students preparing for U.S. History Exams. The following summative essays are all researched and written by the 2015-16 Student Historians, compiled in chronological order, and organized by unit. Each essay includes an image of the object or artwork from the N-YHS collection that serves as the foundation for the U.S. History content reviewed. Additional educational supplementary materials include a glossary of frequently used terms, review activities including a crossword puzzle as well as questions and answers taken from past U.S.

Elections are at the foundation of our democracy, but voters sometimes cast their ballots without critical information about presidential candidates. This report calls for requirements that candidates release more personal financial information, including five years of tax returns, and undergo criminal and intelligence background checks. The report also advocates for a system allowing candidates to submit to voluntary medical exams with some results released to the public. This report was researched and written during the 2018-2019 academic year by students in Fordham Law School’s Democracy and the Constitution Clinic, which is focused on developing non-partisan recommendations to strengthen the nation’s institutions and its democracy.

SPONSORED CONTENT/AD AGE BREAKING BOUNDARIES National Geographic Channel Marks 15 Years With Bold New Content Opportunities By Julie Liesse erhaps no other cable network has ever arrived on the scene with a brand as powerful and distinctive as National Geographic Chan- nel did in 2001. In 15 years on the air, now reaching 90 million homes in the U.S. and more than 440 million around the world, National Geographic PChannel has both reflected and expanded on the heritage of the 128-year-old National Geographic Society. It’s reflected that heritage with classic science and adventure series and documentaries—as well as spinoff channels Nat Geo WILD and Nat Geo MUNDO—while expanding the brand with new nonfiction offerings such as “Breakthrough,” “Brain Games” and “StarTalk,” and scripted events, including “Saints & Strangers” and the Emmy-nominated “Killing Jesus.” Now the network is preparing to raise the ante with a major commitment to top-flight programming to draw in even more viewers while opening the door to expanded tie-in opportunities for marketers looking to partner with the well-respected brand. This newest stage coincides with the expanded role of 21st Century Fox. Fox and National Geographic Society have been partners for 18 years in owning and operating National Geographic Channels around the globe. November 2016 Title – The Mammoth Hunters Author – Jean Auel Call Number – AUDIO CD Book Description - Once again Jean M. Auel opens the door of a time long past to reveal an age of wonder and danger at the dawn of the modern human race. With all the consummate storytelling artistry and vivid authenticity she brought to The Clan of the Cave Bear and its sequel, The Valley of Horses, Jean M. Auel continues the breathtaking epic journey of the woman called Ayla. Riding Whinney with Jondalar, the man she loves, and followed by the mare’s colt, Ayla ventures into the land of the Mamutoi--The Mammoth Hunters. She has finally found the Others she has been seeking. Though Ayla must learn their different customs and language, she is adopted because of her remarkable hunting ability, singular healing skills, and uncanny fire- making technique. Bringing back the single pup of a lone wolf she has killed, Ayla shows the way she tames animals. She finds women friends and painful memories of the Clan she left behind, and meets Ranec, the dark-skinned, magnetic master carver of ivory, whom she cannot refuse--inciting Jondalar to a fierce jealousy that he tries to control by avoiding her. Unfamiliar with the ways of the Others, Ayla misunderstands, and thinking Jondalar no longer loves her, she turns more to Ranec. Throughout the icy winter the tension mounts, but warming weather will bring the great mammoth hunt and the mating rituals of the Summer Meeting, when Ayla must choose to remain with Ranec and the Mamutoi, or to follow Jondalar on a long journey into an unknown future.

  • The Facts: President Reagan's Mental Health and Stability
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 9, 2018 THE FACTS: PRESIDENT REAGAN’S MENTAL HEALTH AND STABILITY WHILE IN OFFICE NEVER IN QUESTION OP/ED CO-WRITTEN BY JOHN HEUBUSCH AND CRAIG SHIRLEY AS PUBLISHED AT CNN.COM, JANUARY 9, 2018 Only a few days into the New Year, we have already learned much: Donald Trump is still President, he is by all accounts still sensitive to what irks him, and, contrary to those who attempt to make a comparison, he is nothing like Ronald Reagan. From the way they govern to the way they communicate, there is nothing whatsoever similar about them. Our sense is that President Trump really does not invite nor would especially accept or appreciate a comparison to any U.S. President to come before him, Reagan or otherwise. We’ve no doubt that, love him or leave him, in his view, he stands alone. But during President Trump’s remarks in defense of his mental health status as a result of supposed revelations in Michael Wolff’s book, “Fire and Fury”, he mentioned that his critics are “taking out the old Ronald Reagan playbook.” Some are. But what’s most troubling about the look back in time is a historical rewrite where the record simply needs to be set straight. To wit, several commentators have their facts just plain wrong: they claim that in the late-1980’s, while in office, Ronald Reagan had Alzheimer’s. Some have reached back in time to grab headlines: “Is Reagan Senile?” asked a May, 1987 edition of the New Republic.

BILL O’REILLY & MARTIN DUGARD Killing Reagan The Violent Assault That Changed a Presidency A HENRY HOLT READING GROUP GUIDE 1. The authors depict Ronald and Nancy Reagan as a power couple. How do you think they compare with two other power couples in the White House: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and Bill and Hillary Clinton? In what ways was Nancy Reagan’s public persona the same as the other First Ladies, and how was it different? What do you think of the First Lady wielding public power, even though she is not an elected official? 2. Nancy Reagan had a public image as a “controlling ice queen.” She was 978-1-6277-9241-7 responsible for getting people fired, such as the president’s chief of staff Donald Regan and Secretary of Health and Human Services Margaret Heckler. She consistently claimed that her actions were done for the benefit of her husband. Was that your impression after reading this book? Do you think the popular comparison of her to Lady Macbeth—a wife pushing her husband’s ambitions—is a fair one? 3. Ronald Reagan changed his political affiliations over his life: first a Democrat, he then wanted to join the Communist Party before becoming a conservative Republican. Were there consistent principles in each of his political preferences? Do you think he changed his ideas over the course of his life? Were you surprised to hear that he once flirted with communism? 4. Ronald Reagan was famous as president for his charm and his ability to communicate, yet he failed to become a first-rank Hollywood star.
