    La escuela Utagawa, orgullo de Edo Daniel Sastre de la Vega UNIVERSIDAD AUTÓNOMA DE MADRID Toyohara Kunichika El rufián Ushiwaka Denji (por Sawamura Tosshō II), 1867 (cat. 72 b) 44 La escuela Utagawa consiguió una popularidad, pujanza y permanencia supe- riores al resto de escuelas de ukiyo-e. Ninguna contó entre sus filas, al mismo tiempo, con tres artistas en plenas facultades creativas, cada uno líder de su propia especialidad. En la escuela Utagawa coincidieron, simultáneamente, Ku- nisada –maestro de retratos de bellezas femeninas y actores de kabuki–, Kuni- yoshi –especialista en estampas de guerreros– y Hiroshige –el gran creador de paisajes–1. Si en el siglo XVII destacó la escuela encabezada por Hishikawa Moronobu (1618-1694) y en el XVIII las escuelas Torii y Katsukawa, en el siglo XIX el pro- tagonismo fue acaparado por los Utagawa. Su ascenso al reconocimiento públi- co no se manifestó con el fundador de la escuela sino con la segunda generación de discípulos, que iniciaron su carrera ascendente en los últimos cinco años del siglo XVIII. Los datos que aportan los expertos sobre la producción de la escue- la son reveladores de la importancia económica alcanzada por la maquinaria artística Utagawa. Solamente atendiendo al número de artistas que añadieron Utagawa a su nombre, o que recibieron de un maestro de la escuela algunos de los caracteres de su identidad artística –gagō–, la cifra supera el centenar2. Si se compara este dato con los veinticinco artistas adscritos a la escuela Katsukawa, la diferencia resulta considerable. El estilo característico de sus estampas conformaría en el siglo XIX la imagen tópica de bellezas femeninas o actores de teatro kabuki, y llevaría a la identifi- cación de sus artistas con la ciudad de Edo –por trabajar y vivir allí3–.

The Japanese myth of ghosts is similar to our concept: People who suffered harm, injustice or violence during their lifetime won’t find peace in death, haunting their tormentors as ghosts. Furthermore, many Japanese ghosts are incarnations of natural elements: Mountains and waters, snow and wind, animals, plants, and even tools become animated beings (BAKEMONO or HENGE), who have the ability to confuse and even kill people. The YOKAI, chimerical monsters, are mostly summoned in uncanny places. Even until this day, the belief in the existence of ghostly spirits and rituals of appeasement are an inherent part of Shinto, the traditional religion in Japan. As a result of an increase in book production during the Edo period (1603-1868), Japanese colour woodcuts became the primary medium for artistic expression. Portraits of actors and scenes from KABUKI theatre were particularly popular. In the 19th century, the KABUKI repertoire featured the thrilling and sometimes familiar ghost stories. The theatrical finesse of KABUKI, which incorporated revolving stages, quick costume changes, candle light effects and invisible stagehands, was a suitable framework for eerie dramaturgy and the presentation of transcendental beings.

The works make a significant addition to the graphic art collections of the national museum. Their variety and quality offer a representative overview of the art of the Japanese woodblock print, and potentially illustrate the impact of Japanese arts on those of New Zealand in appropriately conceived curatorial projects. Additionally, they inform fresh perspectives on New Zealand collecting interests during the last 40 years. After a discussion of the history and motivations behind the collection, this article introduces a representative selection of these works, arranged according to the conventional subject categories popular with nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Japanese audiences. Bijin-ga pictures of beautiful women, genre scenes and kabuki-e popular theatre prints reflect the hedonistic re-creations of ukiyo ‘floating world’ sensibilities in the crowded streets of Edo. Kachöga ‘bird and flower pictures’ and fukeiga landscapes convey Japanese sensitivities to the natural world. Exquisitely printed surimono limited editions demonstrate literati tastes for refined poetic elegance, and shin-hanga ‘new prints’ reflect changes in sensibility through Japan’s great period of modernisation.

Chapel Hill 2019 Approved by: Bradley Bailey Victoria Rovine Dorothy Verkerk © 2019 Madison Alexandra Folks ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Madison A Folks: Adaptation and Aspiration: Constructing Modern Japan through Ideological Combat in Satsuma Rebellion Prints (Under the direction of Bradley Bailey) Although past scholarship on Meiji-period prints has favored a clean evolution–from Yokohama-e to senso-e, samurai to soldier–this thesis considers two images of the Satsuma Rebellion that complicate both this historical transition and the art historical assessment of the woodblock medium. If the rebellion marked the “dress rehearsal” for imperial encroachment in Asia, I argue that woodblock prints offered mixed, preliminary reviews of Modern Japan. Between the eager curiosity of Yokohama-e and the self-exaltation of senso-e, Yoshitoshi and Shoso’s Satsuma Rebellion e-Sugoroku Game Board and Kunisada III’s War with the Western Nations mark the internal negotiation between competing notions of Japanese identity, as well as competing directions for the woodblock print – both in terms of pictorial style and social function.     + EXPLAINING UKIYO-E DAVID BELL A Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand November 2002 2 ABSTRACT The term ukiyo-e refers to a distinctive phenomenon in Japanese art. Ukiyo-e can be defined temporally, geographically and socially; most importantly, it developed its own distinctive stylistic character. Most studies of ukiyo-e have been founded on a descriptive mode: they have sought to identify its principal characteristics, and to describe the different projects of its various schools and artists. Recent research has shifted into a more explanatory mode, locating explanations of ukiyo-e‟s distinctive pictorial character in descriptions of the socio-cultural context to which it pertained. This project seeks to establish richer explanations for the pictorial character of ukiyo-e. It argues that appropriate explanations may be found through a critical appraisal of the conditions which constrained and stimulated the enterprises of ukiyo-e artists. It finds these conditions to be manifest in the conceptual foundations that informed its artists; in the ways artists learned the knowledge and skills of their craft; in the sorts of function ukiyo-e pictures were required to perform; and in two conditions of the artists‟ medium: pictorial devices or conventions and the spatial constraints of their media, and the material conditions with which they worked. No matter how closely works of ukiyo-e artists conformed to the pictorial character common to the school as a whole, each individual also followed an independent pathway. The final chapter acknowledges the ways individual artists were disposed to work differently within the auspices of the broader enterprise.

    ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 2014 In reading through this DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE report, please note at the left of each page, the individuals and companies who have made possible a successful year at the Harn Museum of Art. This year the Harn took on the most ambitious exhibition in the museum’s history, Kongo across the Waters, an international loan show organized in partnership with the Royal Museum for Acquisition Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium. After opening at the Harn in fall 2013 the exhibition traveled Endowments Kathleen M. Axline to three other museums, drawing record crowds at the Harn and each of the subsequent Acquisition Endowment venues—the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, the Princeton University Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art. In keeping with the Harn’s commitment to support Caroline Julier and James G. Richardson the University of Florida’s goal of internationalization, other exhibitions this year expanded Acquisition Fund the exploration of global cultures. Life is a Highway: Prints from Japan’s Tokaido Road, a highly innovative and engaging exhibition, drew on the Harn’s collection of Japanese prints, Melvin and Lorna Rubin Fund which includes three complete sets of wood cuts illustrating landscapes and the adventures of travelers along one of Japan’s legendary highways. Highlighting treasures from the Harn’s David A. Cofrin Acquisition Endowment Indian art collection, the exhibition String of Pearls: Traditional Painting also included some key loans of Indian jewelry from Winter Haven collectors William and Norma Roth and spotlighted Phil and Barbara two gorgeous gem-studded pieces of historic Indian jewelry donated to the museum by long- Emmer Art Acquisition Endowment time patron and friend Vam York, whose husband Dr.

En la Biblioteca de la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid se encuentran dos álbumes de este género que llegaron a la misma gracias a la donación de la excepcional figura de Juan Carlos Cebrián Cervera, quien desde Estados Unidos, ayudó a poner en marcha y nutrir de fondos a varias bibliotecas españolas. D A T* Resumen En el Museo de Zaragoza (España) se conserva la Colección de Arte Oriental de Federico Torralba, en la cual hay grabados japoneses ukiyo-e. En la conmemoración del centenario de nacimiento de este catedrático de Historia del Arte y coleccionista presentamos un estudio de la parte de sus grabados japoneses del periodo Edo (1615-1868). La colección presenta obras de los principales artistas del grabado de esta época y sus grandes géneros, centrándonos en este estudio en el bijin-ga (mujeres hermosas). Los artistas representados en la colección pertenecen a la escuela Harunobu, Kitagawa, Eisen y Utagawa (Kunisada, Sadahide, Kuniyoshi y Yoshiiku). Abstract The Museum of Zaragoza (Spain) exhibits the Collection of Oriental Art Federico Torralba, with Japanese woodblock prints ukiyo-e. In commemoration of the centenary of Federico Torralba (1913-2002) we present a study of his collection of Japanese woodblock prints of Edo period (1615-1868). One of the most important parts of the Oriental Art Collection Federico Torral- ba is bijin-ga (beautiful women).
