UNIC RESEARCH The impact of the Coronavirus outbreak on the European cinema industry 18 June 2021 REOPENING/CLOSING INITIATIVES SUMMARY Please find a regularly updated list of audience engagement initiatives from cinema operators and their national associations specifically related to the closing/re-opening process below. Additional data on re- opening dates and health and safety guidelines can be found in our general research, which is available online. COUNTRY DETAILS Private initiatives Cineplexx issued re-opening measures for a safe cinema-going experience. Announcing their re-opening, Votiv Kino de France published health and safety measures they had taken and recommendations for their guests. In addition, a special 2 for 1 ticket promotion was in place for their re-opening weekend. Gartenbaukino and Stadtkino in Vienna launched a social media campaign called #curtainrace, with cinemas sharing a video of their curtains slowly opening while a countdown is projected on to the screen, to symbolise the re-opening of cinemas. This initiative has also been successful in Germany. More information is available here. Cineplexx launched the Cineplexx Day, which is scheduled for August 5 – the day of its reopening. All tickets on the day will cost 3 euro and come with free popcorn and soft drinks. Tickets can be booked from 31 July. In addition, Cineplexx launched a special welcome back promotion. Between 5 August and 13 September, participants who purchase two visits to the cinema (on different days) will get their third visit for only € 6. Cineplexx encouraged their audience to share their best Tenet moment for a AUSTRIA chance to win movie tickets and popcorn for their next cinema visit. -

CULTURE RECOVERY FUND FOR INDEPENDENT CINEMAS IN ENGLAND Administered by the BFI on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport’s Culture Recovery Fund for arts and cultural organisations. Cineworld/Empire Merger
Completed acquisition by Cineworld Group plc of five cinemas owned by Empire Cinemas Limited Decision on relevant merger situation and substantial lessening of competition ME/6633/16 The CMA’s decision on reference under section 22(1) of the Enterprise Act 2002 given on 12 December 2016. Please note that [] indicates figures or text which have been deleted or replaced in ranges at the request of the parties for reasons of commercial confidentiality. SUMMARY 1. On 12 August 2016 Cineworld Group plc (Cineworld) acquired five cinemas (the Target Cinemas) from Empire Cinemas Limited (Empire) (the Merger). Cineworld and Empire are together referred to as the Parties. The Target Cinemas are the Empire Basildon; the Empire Hemel Hempstead; the Empire Poole; the Empire Leicester Square; and the Empire Bromley. 2. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) believes that it is or may be the case that the Parties’ enterprises have ceased to be distinct and that the share of supply test is met. The four-month period for a decision, as extended, has not yet expired. The CMA therefore believes that it is or may be the case that a relevant merger situation has been created. 3. The Parties overlap in the supply of cinema exhibition services in the UK, and at a local level, in relation to three of the five Target Cinemas (the Empire Leicester Square, the Empire Bromley and the Empire Hemel Hempstead). Given that, post-Merger, there has been only a small increase in Cineworld’s share of supply at the national level and that a number of strong national competitors will remain, the CMA does not believe that the Merger has given rise to any concerns in the supply of cinema exhibition services on a national basis. -

As the site of most detailed fieldwork, Australia forms the primary focus of the investigation, while information gathered in the UK provides material for contextualisation and comparative analysis. The public screening of films takes place in a wide variety of settings in rural areas of Australia and the UK. These range from modern multi-screen venues operating in large regional centres, through to older-style twin and single screen cinemas found in smaller places. In very small and remote settlements, where film exhibition is generally not viable on a commercial basis, screenings are held in purpose-built and make-shift facilities by local councils, community cooperatives, film societies and a few small-scale entrepreneurs. As a commercial enterprise, the fortunes of film exhibitors are closely tied to wider economic and demographic trends. Over recent decades there has been a significant increase in the overall number of multiplexes in rural areas. -
