ATHLETICS INCLUSIVE APRIL - JUNE 2021 Welcome to the second edition of the quarterly equality, diversity and inclusion news from UK Athletics, Athletics Northern Ireland, England Athletics, Scottish Athletics and Welsh Athletics. PARA INCLUSION Welsh Athletics As part of our ongoing commitment to closer working with Disability Sport Wales [DSW], Welsh Athletics is in the process of recruiting a jointly funded Para Athletics Pathway Coordinator. We have seen great recent success at the European Para-athletics Championships with a total of 7 medals from Welsh Athletes and we hope this joint working will continue and build on this success as the organisation become more closely integrated. The role will support the development and progression of Para Athletes within the Athletics Pathway (from community through to performance) as identified by Disability Sport Wales and Welsh Athletics. It will aim to ensure that all Para Athletes within the pathway have access to appropriate and meaningful community opportunities to support individual needs. There will also be mentoring and upskilling outreach support for athletes, coaches, clubs and key contacts in collaboration with the DSW Performance Pathway Team and WA. This is an exciting opportunity in a role which will be fully integrated into the Welsh Athletics Performance team at the start of preparations for the Birmingham 2022 Games. Scottish Athletics With athletics training returning across the country, a Safe Return to Training guide has been produced for wheelchair and frame running to remind athletes, coaches and clubs of the extra safety considerations. The guidance highlights equipment checks, how to minimise risks, training safely on the track and training safely on the road. -

Hockey Wales 360° Assistant Coach Overview of 360 Hockey Centres The Talent development pathway has emerged as part of the holistic ‘Hockey for Life’ framework, through extensive research and consultation involving key stakeholders within Hockey Wales. The main aim is to promote a bespoke ‘Welsh Way’ of playing and delivering hockey, providing a shared vision to come together and deliver a holistic framework for all to engage, grow and excel in Hockey, one system for all. If we can all work towards this, we have the potential to: . Provide opportunities for as many people as possible to achieve their potential . Develop a stronger base for hockey to achieve more success at all levels of the game . Develop senior internationals for Wales and Great Britain . Develop national & international role models to inspire future talent The vision is to deliver a player-centred, development driven and competition-supported system, designed to permit talent to thrive. The Talent Development pathway has six tiers. Tier 1 Participation and development within clubs and schools Tier 2 360° Hockey Centres for Talent Development – learning to train and training to train Tier 3 Performance Clubs Tier 4 International Programmes (age group, Wales A and Wales) Tier 5 AspireGB Programme Tier 6 GB Youth & GB Senior Programme Purpose of 360o Hockey C entres In favour of the longitudinal talent development process these centres will be run over a series of months in the year allowing growth to take place over a substantial period of time. Training sessions will take place on pre-set dates according to a priority calendar on a Sunday. -

Introduction In this project, I am going to either prove or disprove two hypotheses: • firstly, that the position of a rugby player will make a difference to what they think a great captain is; and • secondly, that for a captain to be great, they do not have to be the best in their position. I will prove or disprove these hypotheses through the following research: • conducting semi-quantitative surveys • reading and analysing 4 great rugby captains’ autobiographies (qualitative research) and their views on leadership and captaincy • and finally wider online research. Rugby is a sport and subject that I am very passionate about, and I aspire to play at the highest level. Currently I play for Hampton U13 Bs and my club (Twickenham) first team. I find captaincy interesting as I think it takes great skill and certain characteristics to be a good captain let alone a country-leading world-famous great captain. My personal experiences of rugby captaincy have been periodically with my school team and regularly for my club. My personal view of rugby captaincy based on my experiences is that you need to be the hardest-working player on the pitch at all times – you may not be the most skilled, but you can be the hardest-working, and respect from your team- mates and from your coaches comes from this work ethic. -

Monmouthshire Community Chest Scheme £22,644 invested between April and July in 12 different community sports clubs & associations Featured Clubs Y Fenni Triathlon Club * Monnow Swimming Club Y Fenni Triathlon Club * AWARDED £1,366 Abergavenny Y-Fenni Tri Club was formed in March 2013 and Cycle Club formed after an initial 6 week trial thanks to Local Authority Partnership Funding. The club * has 24 members ranging from early 20‟s to late South Monmouth 60‟s, they train every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month. The club completes their swimming Dragons training in the pool and running and biking * around the local Abergavenny area. The club recently received a Community Chest grant to Abergavenny increase their number of coaches and Hockey Club AUTUMN NEWSLETTER first aiders by two which has enabled them to increase their sessions. Abergavenny Cycle Club Awarded £2,205 Abergavenny Road Club is a rapidly expanding cycling club which welcomes riders of all disciplines, abilities and ages. On or off road, competitive or social. The club has seen a significant increase in youth participation at club coaching sessions since the Olympics. The club receives funding through membership and sponsorship, and this is spent on events, equipment and subsidised cycle kit to ensure that the costs of cycling are kept as low as possible - so inclusive to all. Steve Lane, Club Secretary and Coach said “Our membership has grown considerably since the Olympics and our „Young Rider‟ sessions attract in excess of 60 young riders, of all ages and abilities, We are loathe to turn any young rider away but there are set limitations with coaching ratios. -

Annual Report 2016/17 Contents Chair Foreword Chair Foreword 3 I am so proud to be the Chair of Welsh Netball, this resilient organisation capable of real change. CEO Report 4 This year has seen the organisation progress from a position of stability to one of active growth. Community Development 6 Our connectivity across the world of sport has visibly increased, Wendy B White BEM 14 demonstrated most notably by the Swansea University International Catherine Lewis Test Series v Silver Ferns in February. A huge undertaking indeed, Performance 15 Chair of Welsh Netball but one that has placed netball firmly on the map and ensured that the voice of Welsh Netball is now heard globally as well as across Europe. The Swansea University International Test Series 24 Welsh Netball’s workforce remains active across the country with Celtic Dragons 28 participation increasing across members, officials and coaches. Our dedicated family of volunteers continue to support netball on every Communications 32 level, allowing women and girls to participate from their very first steps onto court. We are very thankful for their time and endless efforts. Our family of sponsors also continues to grow as more and more partners recognise the impact and importance of women’s sport. Their support and resources power our squads, improving performance and allowing our players more ways to engage with the wider sporting audience. Many thanks to the Welsh Netball Board for their unwavering support. All volunteers, they give their time and effort willingly. Also to our staff, your commitment and resourcefulness has been clearly demonstrated this year and we thank you for always going the extra mile.
